Nifty little 5 oz flask packadged with bottles of Cutty Sark for holiday giving. Keep the flask, slap a bow on the Cutty Sark and give it to your brother-in-law. Or keep the Cutty Sark and use it to cut Carolan’s Irish Creme 50/50 (that stuffs too sweet and sticky to drink by itself, but no use adding the good stuff to it). In fly fishing, there’s a saying that maybe the mark of a fisherman should not be how big of a fish will satisfy him, but how small of a fish he can catch and be satisfied. I suppose there’s something similar in golf. Good luck, doesn’t work for me

The national park elk herds tend to be pretty docile; I don’t recall the last time I heard of anyone around here being hurt by one. Bull moose, on the other hand, scare the shit out of me. Charlie & Willi were making noises about a Colorado ‘Clave and that would be great, but I was thinking a ‘Clave in Yellowstone National Park might be worth considering. If we stayed up in Mammoth Hot Springs we’d be within easy driving distance of Soda Butte, Lamar, Slough Creek and literally miles and miles of decent trout water. I’m thinking the first full week of August, Sunday the 5th to Saturday the 11th. We’d have to get going pretty quickly on reservations, the Park fills up early. Any interest ?

Good point. The Labor Day cut-off is not as sharp as it used to be years ago. Just too many people have taken up fly-fishing and more people have more flexibility in their work/vacation schedules. It’s not until October or so until the streams are truly people-free. Still, I don’t think the post-labor day crowds rival at all the August circus. It would be helpful to have up-to-date info (based on this past year’s experience) on which areas/campgrounds are likely to be least crowded. Some places were crowded, some weren’t. One of the nicest fish I caught was in Soda Butte creek. It was a short walk and no other people. After Labor Day, my wife and I drove through the park both going and coming from a visit to friends in Stephensville, MT. The streams were packed! I visited Bud Lilly’s fly shop and the first thing the guy behind the counter said to me is, "If you’re here to book a guide, we’re full up for the next several weeks." I guess everyone had the idea to wait until the kids were back in school. In spite of this—have a clave and I’ll try to make it. I like those short drives. It’s only about 5 hours from home:)

Well, yes and no. September is completely out of the question for us, Kristine has work commitments. I mentioned the first full week in August because traditionally the Yellowstone Institute has a full slate of interesting classes for the non-fishing folks like Kristine to attend. The Summer 2001 Course Catalog is due out any day now, will post a pointer when it appears. Big Dale, I couldn’t find the 2001 dates for the Livingston FFF Conclave on their website, you’re right it would be nice to gather either just before or just after. The dates for the FFF conclave are Aug.6-11, but most often I attend only wed afternoon thru saturday, so if the clave is that week I could still make most of the clave. I sure as hell don’t want to miss fishing in the Yellowstone area with you guys a second year in a row. Besides, I need a fix of shopping in Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone. [snipped] I did have the opportunity to camp out in Yellowstone for 10 days in September once, though, and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life. The elk are in full rut, and are right in the campgrounds. Makes it a little hard to sleep when a monster bull is bugling right outside the tent, but it is very exciting. You owe it to yourself to go there in the fall sometime if you haven’t yet.

It is a lot longer drive from Dallas, but I would be willing. It would be nice if the clave was either the week before or the week after the FFFconclave in Livingston. My greatest regret of 2000 is not being able to make the Montana clave.. Big Dale

Well, sure, that’s great, if you don’t have to be there at school to teach the kiddies! I would be seriously hot to go to a Yellowstone Clave in August, although the third or fourth week of August would be best for me, as I plan to be in British Columbia for the first half of Aug (see my other post), and would likely be driving back through Montana about that time. I did have the opportunity to camp out in Yellowstone for 10 days in September once, though, and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life. The elk are in full rut, and are right in the campgrounds. Makes it a little hard to sleep when a monster bull is bugling right outside the tent, but it is very exciting. You owe it to yourself to go there in the fall sometime if you haven’t yet. Kevin

Two years ago we packed into Slough Creek, campground 8. Before we went in we had some time to spend driving around Yellowstone and fishing a few creeks. Some places were crowded, some weren’t. One of the nicest fish I caught was in Soda Butte creek. It was a short walk and no other people. After Labor Day, my wife and I drove through the park both going and coming from a visit to friends in Stephensville, MT. The streams were packed! I visited Bud Lilly’s fly shop and the first thing the guy behind the counter said to me is, "If you’re here to book a guide, we’re full up for the next several weeks." I guess everyone had the idea to wait until the kids were back in school. In spite of this—have a clave and I’ll try to make it. I like those short drives. I’d opt for the last week in August, if it be August at all. Hoppers, cooler temperatures, and hopefully less crowded. I include the Madison, Henry’s Lake, the Gallatin, etc, in "Yellowstone". Going all that way might as well hit the biggies… /daytripper (Gonna think about it)

They seem really good looking, made in Florida by a new company. Components and quality seems to belie the fact that they are only priced around $100-200! To answer your question I have not heard of them, but now I have a question. Do you have a contact for the company or the ownership of this company, I have heard that len codella’s son was involved in a new graphite rod co. Len used to be with T&T who once had a line of rods called the Heritage series which they dropped, I think about the time Len left. If this is Len’s son’s company and if they are based on the old Heritage action I’m gonna have to buy a few. I don’t know much about where they’re from (maybe Korean blanks?) but I liked the feel of them when we had a chance to try them out last spring. We bought a bunch of them to replace the aging Cortlands we use in our flycasting classes – very good value. They have only apparently been in business for 9 months and are currently trying to buuld up an inventory. Well, i just spoke to Phil who was the older gentleman I met at the show. He said that they are at the moment unable to keep up with the orders and it’ll be at least two mths before he’s caught up. They can only make about 500 rods a week at the moment. He is going to try to get me a 6wt and an 8 wt to test out. They also have spey rods and their travel rods won’t be available till next year. I did manage to get more info about the rods: They don’t have the warranties that Redington has, nor do they come with fancy tubes and cases. Most of the rods are black on black, stainless SIC stripping guides, stainless snake guides, aluminum reel seats on the saltwater models, wood on the others. Nice finish on the rods in my opinion. Phil also said that for those of you who are interested, your best bet is to contact your nearest Teton/Tioga dealer abt the rods. I’ll let you all know when I get the rods. Before you buy.

If you really must have bootfoot waders, I think these are the best choice. Usually the biggest advantage to bootfoot waders is the ability to get them on and off easily. The disadvantage is that they are not much good for athletic wading over rocky surfaces. Normal bootfoot waders offer no support. Stocking foot waders allow you to get a wader that fits and then put on a boot that fits and gives support. Using this system is time consuming but gives you great mobility in the water. The Sure-Step boot foot neoprene wader falls in between the two – much better than normal boot foot waders but not as good as the stocking foot with seperate boots option. The boot foot on the Sure Step waders has laces on the outside of the outer boot (the boot is stiffer than is normally found on boot foot waders). This allows you to adjust the fit of the boot to actually get some support in the foot and allow you greater mobility and confidence in your wading without taking the time and expense to get both waders and boots. I use them for surf fishing in Northern CA because I get sand in between the boots and the stocking foot of my "normal" waders. I’ve used them on rocky jetty’s and they work pretty well, but if I was only going to fish off the jettys or rocks I’d prefer my stockng foot waders with a seperate boot with studs. So it depends on the conditions under which you fish. Sandy, gravel, or pebble bottoms don’t challenge these boot foot waders at all and they are a good choice for such conditions. On a scale of 1 to 10 (from easy wading to impossible wading) these are fine up to about a 6 (IMO). I’d think twice about using them on fast deep waters with treacherous footing and I wouldn’t even consider regular boot foot waders in such conditions.
