Free Flask
Question:
Nifty little 5 oz flask packadged with bottles of Cutty Sark for holiday giving. Keep the flask, slap a bow on the Cutty Sark and give it to your brother-in-law. Or keep the Cutty Sark and use it to cut Carolan’s Irish Creme 50/50 (that stuffs too sweet and sticky to drink by itself, but no use adding the good stuff to it). Or use the Cutty Sark to clean your pipe collection. Flask is stainless steel with a charcoal finish, hinged cap keeper, lovingly hand-crafted in far-off and exotic China. The healthful benefits of having a wee nip to keep away the dew while flyfishing cannot be overstressed, and of course, it is unethical to bring a fine fish to hand without toasting his merry health afterwards. And, as is well known, purported "flyfishermen" who drink beer, are actually closet bait-fisherman who are afraid to touch worms. Anyway, nice little flask, it would look really fine with some MacCallan or Famous Grouse in it. Timothy Juvenal

Well, here’s one beer drinking flyfisher who ain’t afeared to touch worms. Had a lot of fun at a couple of ROFFian claves feeding them to scotch drinkers who may have had one glass too many. :) Wolfgang no pictures please!

Ahh, it seems beer has indeed impaired your thinking: 1. No such thing as too much Scotch. 2. Tequilla drinkers are the ones you have to watch out for around the worms. And of course, watch out for those Saki drinkers around cut bait. 8^)

Do people take golf too seriously?
Question:
I expect to take golf up again after a haitius of 25+ years. (The walking did me in:)) The plan is is to start off on weekdays at in the fall, on carts, by myself at a Publinx. I expect to have trouble breaking 200 for starters:) I expect though to get better if I stick with it. However I would not be suprised if I never get the equivilent of a 100 on a real hard championship course. But I am going to do it to enjoy myself and the nice weather when there is nice weather. (Dry, between 60 and 75 degrees, no wind, a little warmer with wind. I wonder if most people have lost the ability to enjoy some of life’s simpler pleasures? I wonder if it would happen to me?:) I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend until YOUR DEATH your right to say it! –Austin 3:17 JOHN A. MONTGOMERY

In fly fishing, there’s a saying that maybe the mark of a fisherman should not be how big of a fish will satisfy him, but how small of a fish he can catch and be satisfied. I suppose there’s something similar in golf. Good luck, doesn’t work for me

With me, probably anything with over a pound of filet in it. Last time I ever fished was 40 years from a boat in a like, caufgt zilch. Summer 'Clave in Yellowstone ?
Question:
I have a photo of what you can expect to see in Yellowstone in August: http://www.ruralnetwork.net/%7Etroutbum/album/sp_miscellaneous/madiso… There must have been 100 people alongside the road watching these morons (and I don’t mean the elk). When you drive through the Park make sure to stop and get out of your car at every traffic jam. There’ll probably be some cool wildlife. — visit my web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~royalwulff/
Response:
Cool picture, but not especially frightful. I fish in RMNP at least 20 days each season and I obliviously get that close to elk several times each year. The national park elk herds tend to be pretty docile; I don’t recall the last time I heard of anyone around here being hurt by one. Bull moose, on the other hand, scare the shit out of me. Charlie & Willi were making noises about a Colorado ‘Clave and that would be great, but I was thinking a ‘Clave in Yellowstone National Park might be worth considering. If we stayed up in Mammoth Hot Springs we’d be within easy driving distance of Soda Butte, Lamar, Slough Creek and literally miles and miles of decent trout water. I’m thinking the first full week of August, Sunday the 5th to Saturday the 11th. We’d have to get going pretty quickly on reservations, the Park fills up early. Any interest ?

Are the dates flexible at all, if so yes. I can’t go anywhere from the 4th to the 11th of any month. Not that I would expect anyone to change the dates just for me, but since it was early I’d thought I’d ask. Response:
Good point. The Labor Day cut-off is not as sharp as it used to be years ago. Just too many people have taken up fly-fishing and more people have more flexibility in their work/vacation schedules. It’s not until October or so until the streams are truly people-free. Still, I don’t think the post-labor day crowds rival at all the August circus. It would be helpful to have up-to-date info (based on this past year’s experience) on which areas/campgrounds are likely to be least crowded. JR – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Two years ago we packed into Slough Creek, campground 8. Before we went in we had some time to spend driving around Yellowstone and fishing a few creeks. Some places were crowded, some weren’t. One of the nicest fish I caught was in Soda Butte creek. It was a short walk and no other people. After Labor Day, my wife and I drove through the park both going and coming from a visit to friends in Stephensville, MT. The streams were packed! I visited Bud Lilly’s fly shop and the first thing the guy behind the counter said to me is, "If you’re here to book a guide, we’re full up for the next several weeks." I guess everyone had the idea to wait until the kids were back in school. In spite of this—have a clave and I’ll try to make it. I like those short drives. It’s only about 5 hours from home:)
Response:
Are the dates flexible at all, …
Well, yes and no. September is completely out of the question for us, Kristine has work commitments. I mentioned the first full week in August because traditionally the Yellowstone Institute has a full slate of interesting classes for the non-fishing folks like Kristine to attend. The Summer 2001 Course Catalog is due out any day now, will post a pointer when it appears. Big Dale, I couldn’t find the 2001 dates for the Livingston FFF Conclave on their website, you’re right it would be nice to gather either just before or just after. The dates for the FFF conclave are Aug.6-11, but most often I attend only wed afternoon thru saturday, so if the clave is that week I could still make most of the clave. I sure as hell don’t want to miss fishing in the Yellowstone area with you guys a second year in a row. Besides, I need a fix of shopping in Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone. Let me know who to contact for cabin reservations in the park as I would rather plan this sooner than later knowing how the park fills up. Big Dale

[snipped] I did have the opportunity to camp out in Yellowstone for 10 days in September once, though, and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life. The elk are in full rut, and are right in the campgrounds. Makes it a little hard to sleep when a monster bull is bugling right outside the tent, but it is very exciting. You owe it to yourself to go there in the fall sometime if you haven’t yet.

It is a lot longer drive from Dallas, but I would be willing. It would be nice if the clave was either the week before or the week after the FFFconclave in Livingston. My greatest regret of 2000 is not being able to make the Montana clave.. Big Dale
Response:
I’d opt for the last week in August, if it be August at all. Hoppers, cooler temperatures, and hopefully less crowded. I vote for a Western first part of Sept. after the kiddies have gone back to school.
Well, sure, that’s great, if you don’t have to be there at school to teach the kiddies! I would be seriously hot to go to a Yellowstone Clave in August, although the third or fourth week of August would be best for me, as I plan to be in British Columbia for the first half of Aug (see my other post), and would likely be driving back through Montana about that time. So far there’s talk (and more) about September in Maine, May in PA, and I think Michigan in March/April. – but I could be wrong. A list with dates on a site would be a good idea. Peter Visit The Streamer Page at http://members.home.net/pcharles/streamers/index.html

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I agree. Based on several years’ experience (although I haven’t been there since 95), it will be much more pleasant after Labor Day. There will still be a good number of other folks fishing, but it won’t be the madhouse August is. Fishing is great throughout September. JR I’d opt for the last week in August, if it be August at all. Hoppers, cooler temperatures, and hopefully less crowded. I vote for a Western first part of Sept. after the kiddies have gone back to school.
Two years ago we packed into Slough Creek, campground 8. It’s only about 5 hours from home:) Snoop — —–= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =—– http://www.newsfeeds.com – The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–== Over 80,000 Newsgroups – 16 Different Servers! =—–

To answer your question I have not heard of them, but now I have a question. Do you have a contact for the company or the ownership of this company, I have heard that len codella’s son was involved in a new graphite rod co. Len used to be with T&T who once had a line of rods called the Heritage series which they dropped, I think about the time Len left. If this is Len’s son’s company and if they are based on the old Heritage action I’m gonna have to buy a few. Well, i just spoke to Phil who was the older gentleman I met at the show. He said that they are at the moment unable to keep up with the orders and it’ll be at least two mths before he’s caught up. They can only make about 500 rods a week at the moment. He is going to try to get me a 6wt and an 8 wt to test out. They also have spey rods and their travel rods won’t be available till next year. I did manage to get more info about the rods: They don’t have the warranties that Redington has, nor do they come with fancy tubes and cases. Most of the rods are black on black, stainless SIC stripping guides, stainless snake guides, aluminum reel seats on the saltwater models, wood on the others. Nice finish on the rods in my opinion. Phil also said that for those of you who are interested, your best bet is to contact your nearest Teton/Tioga dealer abt the rods. I’ll let you all know when I get the rods. Before you buy.

If you really must have bootfoot waders, I think these are the best choice. Usually the biggest advantage to bootfoot waders is the ability to get them on and off easily. The disadvantage is that they are not much good for athletic wading over rocky surfaces. Normal bootfoot waders offer no support. Stocking foot waders allow you to get a wader that fits and then put on a boot that fits and gives support. Using this system is time consuming but gives you great mobility in the water. The Sure-Step boot foot neoprene wader falls in between the two – much better than normal boot foot waders but not as good as the stocking foot with seperate boots option. The boot foot on the Sure Step waders has laces on the outside of the outer boot (the boot is stiffer than is normally found on boot foot waders). This allows you to adjust the fit of the boot to actually get some support in the foot and allow you greater mobility and confidence in your wading without taking the time and expense to get both waders and boots. I use them for surf fishing in Northern CA because I get sand in between the boots and the stocking foot of my "normal" waders. I’ve used them on rocky jetty’s and they work pretty well, but if I was only going to fish off the jettys or rocks I’d prefer my stockng foot waders with a seperate boot with studs. So it depends on the conditions under which you fish. Sandy, gravel, or pebble bottoms don’t challenge these boot foot waders at all and they are a good choice for such conditions. On a scale of 1 to 10 (from easy wading to impossible wading) these are fine up to about a 6 (IMO). I’d think twice about using them on fast deep waters with treacherous footing and I wouldn’t even consider regular boot foot waders in such conditions. Hope this helps, Dan Dan Gracia Orvis West Coast Fly Fishing Schools If you kill that big fish you can’t catch ‘em again. So what if they eat other fish? If you kill the big ones there will only be little ones left (funny how that works!).

Question:
Help! I can’t make my rod tiptop stay put. I am considering epoxy. Do any of you rod-building types out there have advice on the subject? Thanks! Randy Walsh
Make sure that you use 5 minute epoxy, and nothing stronger!! Should you ever be required to replace the tiptop and you have used rgular epoxie, you will most likely damage the blank attempting to remove the tiptop. It also may be a good idea before you attempt to epoxy the top in place that you clean the area of the tip where the top will be. Any dirt or grease will definitely affect the bonding ability of the epoxy. As well you want to ensure that there is no shine where the epoxy will be. If that section of the blank is shiny scuff it with a plastic type scouring pad. A good product for this is something called smooth scuff. All you want to do is scuff the finish. You do NOT want to remove the finish and risk cutting into the fibre of the blank. This is why you should not use sandpaper. To clean the blank, just use a little rubbing or denatured alcohol and let it dry before you apply the 5 minute epoxy. Ian Scott Wishbone Custom Rods 2 Henry St., RR 1 Grand Valley, Ont., 519-928-2906
Response:
There is some risk with 5-min epoxy for tip-top attachment. Depending on the polymer mixture used (including Devcon’s), the epoxy may not retain its flexibility and the tip may fatigue and snap over repeated hook sets, fish etc. I would recommend going to a polymer which provides some flexibility when cured and retains elasticity under high loads (epoxy, on the other hand, loses elasticity at high loads upon curing and can result in a "brittle" fracture not unlike cast iron). One such product is manufactured by Flex Coat and comes in a solid "stick" form which is melted with head and rubbed onto the tip of the rod prior to application. Ryan Jordan

Help! I can’t make my rod tiptop stay put. I am considering epoxy. Do any of you rod-building types out there have advice on the subject? Thanks! Randy Walsh

Try 5 minute epoxy. It will hold and is reversable with heat. Jonathan Clarke

Flexcoat sells tip top adhesive that you apply with heat. Then, if the tip’s not on proper, or you want to remove it, just heat it up and fix it, or take it off. You can find it in most fly fishing catalogs. The problem with epoxy is that if you get it on crooked, too bad. Steve

You should be using epoxy, the 5 minute type. This will allow you to remove the tip or replace the tip with a little heat. Good luck Dennis & George

The other consideration (I think) might be the fit. I have had problems in the past if the tip was Just a little too large. I’ve used the hot glue method for years and had no serious problems if the fit was right…. Steve

Lake Trout Recommendations
Question:
From an avid fly-fisher living in the worst fly-fishing area in the world: HELP! Living in eastern Kansas, (having come from western Montana), the only trout I have heard about in this area are lake trout in Lake Shawnee near Topeka, KS. My question is: Is there a way to fly-fish for lake Trout? Won’t they more than likely be bottom feeding? How do I get down to them without having to (gag) bring out my spinning reel? Am I just out of luck? BK Devlin
Response:
You’re not going to like this but you can only do well on lakers when the water temps near optimum up top. Unless you use uranium core sinking lines. It’s switch to carp. They hit Italian dry flies — cubes of bread — nicely and fight like freshwater bonefish. It’s only a couple of days to Idaho. — ** Louis Bignami, Publisher http://www.finefishing.com Fine Fishing Internet Magazine "largest fishing mag on the Net" **

How are the Run Offs in Colorado When, Where & How long??????
Question:
The weather in Colorado this spring has been cold with snow in the high country. Ski resorts have re-open the week of May 22nd. What effect will this have on the major fly fishing streams and rivers this year? Where does one go when the run offs occur and have the begun? When will the peak this year and when can we accept to return to our farovite rivers and streams? Thanks in advance for the Infor.

The run-off is affecting just about every river here and it appears that it
is going to last into the next century. Even the tailwater dams are cranked open in anticipation. I suggest you dust off the ol’ float tube and hit the lakes for a while. Denver, Colorado ftp.rmii.com/pub2/gwgodden

I live on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison and keep daily tabs on runoff. The main rivers are high and dirty now, and there is more snow above 11,000 feet in the San Juans than I have ever seen at this time of year. Normally runoff in the Gunnison basin peaks about June 17, but it all depends on how hot it gets and how quickly it gets hot. Many rivers may clear by July 1, but could still be very high until mid-to-late July this year. Runoff can be beaten, though, if you are willing to fish smaller feeder streams, especially those at higher elevations and those with south facing drainage basins. Beaver ponds are another option at this time of year, and can have some good trout, even some that will rise to dries. Lyndon Lampert
