WHY FISHING IS BETTER THAN SEX A big, juicy worm always gets a fish excited. You don’t have to eat a fish while it’s still flopping around. You can take a leak in the bush anytime you want. Stroking your rod won’t piss off a trout. Sipping a beer and scratching your balls is all the foreplay expected of you. Anything you stick in a fish’s face, it eats. A fish will never gag, choke, or come up for air. A red snapper won’t cry if you call it a flounder. You wear rubbers on your feet, not on your dick. If you want a bigger pole, you can have a bigger pole. A smart fish knows when to keep it’s mouth shut. It’s okay to cook a fish to make it taste good. Fish bite for a guy of 60; same as they do for a guy of 20. You’re never called a jerk when you throw back an ugly fish. Fish are real happy when you pick up your gear and go home.

Would someone/everyone mind commenting on these two books (Prospecting for Trout by Rosenbauer; Reading the Water by Hughes) . . . I’m certainly not casting this as a competition, just want to understand a little more about them from the always enlightening roff perspective.
I just finished reading "Reading the Water" by Dave Hughes. I felt it would have been a better book with a few less words and a few more illustrations to illustrate what he was talking about. It was enjoyable reading though. HTH, Russell Thinkin’ RockTrout won’t be changin’ his order for this one.

No no, I bought it new for the raffle. There were interviews with guys like Mike Lawson, which seemed appropriate for the Henry’s Fork Clave.

Response:

I know Prospecting for Trout fairly well. Rosenbauer is an Orvis bigwig, and I believe he has written some of their best books. The book was originally printed under a separate publisher. On recent printings, it’s being published by Orvis, as part of their "library" of fishing books. He also wrote a book on reading the water which might be better than Hughes’ by the way, simply because it has more and bigger pictures, and pictures are important for learning how to read water.

Alright Jeff, you talked me into getting the book. I also decided to pick up 3 others….:) All on sale right now at Amazon with free shipping!

I know Prospecting for Trout fairly well. Rosenbauer is an Orvis bigwig, and I believe he has written some of their best books. He also grew up in my neck of the woods, and comes to visit from time to time. The book is mainly about how to fish when the dry fly fishing is off, i.e., how to approach a stream when you don’t see any fish rising, and you don’t know much about the water. I think its a very good book. — Scott Reverse first field of address to reply

When you don’t see fish rising, but not necessarily when dry fly fishing is off! Agreed, it’s very good for quickly sizing up water that you’ve never seen before – highly recommended.

Response:

I fished Lynnhaven Inlet yesterday morning in the early hours. Speckled Trout were doing pretty well on the falling tide. I couldn’t get close enough to the bridge to fish the pilings for stripers but saw the spinfishing pluggers catch several in the 6 – 10 lb. range. After a shower and breakfast D. and I met up with friends for an afternoon of live theater then on to a marvelous dinner at Fellini’s of Norfolk. Most of this is relatively unremarkable but on the way home we passed the Ashland Va. exit about 9:30. We saw the south bound lanes of I-95 blocked and thought there was a traffic accident. About 5 miles northbound on I-95 the traffic was at a stop. Checking the radio we learned of the shooting in Ashland just an hour before. This is now the third sniper incident where we have been on the road and in close proximity when the shooting occurred. After a 4 hour wait while the interstate was blocked, traffic was released and we headed home. I have eaten at that Pondorosa a number of times, particularly when visiting Greentop Sporting Goods just down Rt. 1. Greentops had the largest selection of fly fishing material for quite a distance until some new shops opened in the past couple of years. It is interesting to note, that during the long wait on the interstate, there was no sense of motorists being disgruntled, frieghtened, or impatient. There seemed to be 100% support for the law inforcement efforts to put an end to this sorry SOB. I have become as prepared as I can to react should it ever become possible to respond in line of sight to this cowardly piece of shit. — Wayne To Fish is Human…To Release Divine!

And the decline has little to do with either one of them. Economic cycles are very powerful and the Federal Reserve has MUCH more power than the president.

Oh, I’ll agree that the stock market and the economy as a whole was beginning a slow down but George has done absolutely nothing (other than the tax give-away to the rich) to stimulate this economy. While George sits behind his desk plotting ways to avenge his mother and father’s attempted assignation by Saddam, the economy and your retirement egg nose dives. What plans have you heard lately from George on getting this economy rolling?
As a Vietnam area veteran I suspect that I could easily take offense at the notion that I (as well as a few million others) lack the imagination to deal why. Meanwhile, it occurred to me to wonder what use a doctor of divinity degree would be to weapons designer. I was going to ask but, having just conjured my own doctorate in metaphysics and put it to good use, I now not only see the answer but also that it is entirely superfluous. Given your astonishing educational achievements as well as your doubtless conservative estimate of your native intelligence, I am sure you will have no trouble seeing my point and that you can easily imagine the obvious implications and ramifications, particularly with regard to the rather knotty problem of your shoulders chafing against your buttocks. Look how few American boys it took to topple the Taliban.

Indeed. And how many Americans appreciate the fact (or are even aware, for that matter) that the low casualties among the good guys were largely due to the fact that the Taliban fighters were stupefied by several weeks of being bombarded by Vito authored tracts translated into Farsi? So enjoy using all the energy you want with my best wishes.

Thank you. In a near perfect world, all that was lacking was your blessing and that, it is now clear, has been remedied. If we need a bigger share, we’ll simply eliminate some more competators!

They are simply not following due proccess or the law. http://ens-news.com/ens/oct2002/2002-10-10-09.asp Bush Administration Sued Over Utah Energy Project SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, October 10, 2002 (ENS) – Three conservation groups have filed suit to halt the largest oil and gas exploration project ever approved in Utah. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA), the Wilderness Society and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), represented by Earthjustice, sued the Bush administration over a project located south of Dinosaur National Monument, in a remote area known as the Book Cliffs. The project would encompass more than 3,000 square miles of public lands, including seven areas proposed for wilderness designation. The project would require 5,000 explosive detonations along 457 miles of seismic lines, and would take up to two years to complete. "We are seeing a repeated and senseless pattern in which the Administration is actually targeting for exploration the most fragile, important, and scenic lands," said Pam Eaton, regional director of the Wilderness Society’s Four Corners States Office. "There is a place for oil and gas development activities on public lands, but it’s absurd for BLM to simply ignore critical values such as wilderness and impacts to wildlife and vegetation." Just weeks after receiving a record breaking number of public comments – including critical comments from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – the BLM found that the project would have "no significant impact on the environment," and declined to prepare a comprehensive environmental impact statement. Veritas DGC Inc., of Houston would conduct the work for its clients, oil companies that it has refused to identify. Veritas is one of the largest oil exploration companies in the world with more than $456 million in revenue in fiscal year 2002. It has operations in 19 countries on six continents. "We have never seen this extreme, single minded approach to oil development that the BLM is taking now," said Steve Bloch, SUWA staff attorney. "With orders from Washington to make oil drilling its ‘No. 1 priority,’ both Utah’s wildlife and magnificent redrock landscapes are being ruined forever for the chance to produce a few months of oil." The BLM granted its approval on October 4, and put the decision into "full force and effect." The agency also had pre-work meetings with Veritas that day. The BLM would not release its decision record to conservationists unless they made the day long trip to the BLM’s Vernal office, and then refused to release additional correspondence files, all of which are public documents. "The BLM’s actions here – including its disregard of the comments of thousands of concerned citizens and its refusal to share documents – make a mockery of Interior Secretary [Gale] Norton’s oft repeated commitment to ‘Consultation, Cooperation, and Communication in the service of Conservation.’ Here in southern Utah, their actions speak louder than words," said Johanna Wald of NRDC. The BLM disregarded comments by the EPA which noted that "the [environmental assessment] does not adequately characterize the direct and indirect effects to wildlife habitat and soils; the effects of [subsequent off-road vehicle use]; or disclose similar actions, cumulative effects and reasonably foreseeable development within or adjacent to the Project area." The agency also ignored over 25,000 public comments in opposition to the project. "This is another outrageous example of the Bush administration pushing through energy projects without considering their impacts on natural resources," said Susan Daggett, attorney for Earthjustice who is representing the coalition. "The public should have a voice in this process. Let’s not sacrifice the public’s interest at the alter of the Bush-Cheney energy plan." * * *

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – This means nothing to the Bush administration. Bush does exactly what he wants with any resource whether it’s mining, salmon, etc., etc. Power without discipline. Power without knowledge. Power to pay back his political contributors and it’s costing all of you. You who voted for Bush, you’re getting exactly what you voted for. Breathe deep and bend over. Jerry You bet I am! I want cheap gasoline to run in my wife’s Suburban. If you want to drive a Yugo, feel free. By the way, I don’t have to bend over. The tailgate of my Chevrolet 1 ton pickup is tall enough to fill the boat gas tanks without bending over. I’m all for gasoline, within reason. But when it’s a situation of getting oil over everything else, even ANWR, it’s time to step back and take a long look. And you think the reason for Bush’s gas obsession is for the "little man"? Ha. It’s called greed and big oil money, Dave. Again, bend over and breathe deep. How’s it feel to sell your soul for some gasoline? Jerry

Ah Ha! As long as you and those of your stripe get to define "within reason", right? I’ve heard the mantra too long and have become too cynical. "More people" should use public transportation. "More people" should use natural fiber clothing. "More people" should buy gasoline efficient micro econo-boxes. "More people" should keep their homes at 60 degrees in the winter. "More people" should keep their homes at 85 degrees in the summer. Funny thing that. The ones shouting the loudest show up in their private jets and black Suburbans to the Green Granola Earth First Save The Whale Kill a Child and Save a Tree rally. Somehow "More people" is always "Those people." Even ANWR? Have you ever been to ANWR? Do you even know where Kaktovic is? I’ve got a hot tip for you. The coastal plain of ANWR is NOTHING like the touchy, feely pictures and videos that somehow always make it into the news. Hell, I’m all for $50/barrel crude oil in the United States. I own stock in oil companies and still have grandchildren in Alaska. High priced oil will just make their dividends increase. When you are living a 100% renewable life that includes cutting your own firewood, growing your own food and fiber and DEFINITELY not using high tech, energy consuming junk such as computers, get back to me. Otherwise, you are being selective in describing "More people." — Dave

This is an outrage. the system is now broken for our public lands. The BLM, even after protest from the EPA and record setting comments, still claimed that the 5,000 explosions, 415 miles of seismic lines would have " no significant impact on the habitat" lol!!!! this is by far the most grotesque and rogue administration this country has ever seen.

If the Creek is as low as I think it is, it will clear up fast. The trouble we had this spring is that it was soo high, it was washing the banks into the creek, bringing the mud/silt with it. It may actually work in your favor, as the reports were indicating low and clear conditions, which can be very tough anywhere, an inch of rain mmay be perfect. A light rain throughout could result in an awesome trip, The Finn

Response:

Frank!!! What’s happenin!! I have to make a business trip down to Baltimore (Inner Harbor-Wyndham) for an industry conference on September 29th-October 4th, HL7 data protocol conference (a.k.a. The Geek Conference – should be plenty of trekkies mixed in). This makes it very interesting in the area of getting the wife to let me out to play, since she will inherit the madness of the two youngyens while I am in Baltimore those 5 days. As a last ditch effort, I’m actually trying to schedule a client stop in the area on Friday, but it’s not looking too good. If I make it up, it will only be for the day. The other possibility may be Sunday, as a side trip on the way to Baltimore, but I assume most attendees will be gone by then. Just as a warning, my luck this year has been horrendous weather-wise whenever I get out to fish, so you may want to make sure you have the inflatable boat in the tent on Thursday/Friday night. In addition to the obvious 2nd annual Clave, I have seen 15 foot waves at Boca Grande Pass (another trip report yet posted concerning an unsuccessful/successful outing ending in a 250 lbr), and severe drought on the local streams. When I was in the Outer Banks earlier this year, where it hadn’t rained for weeks, it decided to rain (w/ near gale force wind) on the two days I had to fish. I may leave the rod home, just to keep from destroying everyone else’s trip. Let’s see, Friday-Sunday is probably the time both of the remnants from ISIDORE and LILLI will converge over central Pennsylvania. Talk to ya, The Finn "Here I am, an old man in a dry month, Being read to by a boy, waiting for rain"

But now, I’m sorry to say, I can’t come. My daughter has announced she and her family will be arriving Thursday for a long weekend. I can’t very well bug out because they don’t get here that often.
1.5 is at the low end of where mine seems to end up in slower water. For faster water, I seem to get closer to 2x to keep the fly from dragging the indicator under. OTOH, that’s only a guess, since I’m never really that sure how deep the water is in some cases.
Very true. Current does matter. I can’t remember where I read 1.5x, but it did seem like a good estimate of the "average" for most conditions. I think the biggest key here is getting the flies to the desired depth. Sometimes using a dry fly as an indicator is much better than using a yarn/foam/cork type indicator because the fish are feeding closer to the surface and you may want to present an adult version with a emerger or nymph trailing below. Perhaps the best answer would have been "as conditions dictate?" — Warren change addy to yahoo for email Henry’s Fork Clave info and Bozeman, MT fishing info http://www.geocities.com/troutbum_mt3/HFclave.html

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have some questions: First is it necessary for the indicator to float all the time if you can see it readily under water? IMO, no. How far from the fly should it be? 1.5 times the depth of the area you are fishing. Somewhere I have seen directions on how to make your own indicator with poly or macram

In reference to a thread by this title a week or so back….went over to the local stream yesterday(Weds) afternoon. Decent hatch of Grannoms, size 14 or 16, and a later hatch of pale green caddis in a size 16 or 18. Streambred trout took wets or surface emerger types for a couple of us who were fly fishing amongst a few bait fishers. Every small hole seemed to hold a brown. Fish landed ranged from 7 to 13 inches. The locals claim no big hatch of Quill Gordons(the local spring mayfly hatch) yet, which is odd, as they generally precede the little green caddis. These guys I spoke with live on the creek and are as trustworthy as anglers can be<g. On other PA streams, I would expect some Blue Quills, Hendricksons and sometimes Black Quills. All over the state, bright yellow craneflies are out in droves, and sometimes, the fish key on them exclusively. Use a sulfur in a pinch, about a size 16 or smaller. Better still is a parachute style, with large, sparse hackle. Tom L

Tom, I can confirm that the bright yellow craneflies are out in force in Central PA, yesterday and today. Fished the ‘newly’ public water (Espy Farm’s ~1.25 miles) on the Little Juniata River yesterday (Friday)… tan caddis and bright yellow craneflies between 9am-3pm. The ‘Espy Farm" outfitter is charging $100 per person/day to fish, unguided, this small stretch ($295 guided). It is NOW freely accessible if you enter the river either above/below their property and traverse upon the river bed during your travels in the Espy Farm area. Spring Creek is in pretty good shape and fishing well – midges and bright yellow craneflies. The Little Lehigh Creek’s regulars captured a Sulphur dun today (Saturday), an early hatch? take care Dave

Tom – Thanks. On Thursday the locals on the Brodhead said the Hendricksons had been coming for a week and that the Quill Gordons had gone by. No bugs flying in the rain that day.
My experience has been just the opposite, that is, the first few days of the hatch will see sparse feeding on the surface, but as the hatch progresses, the fish will rise to the duns more freely. Yesterday, I fished a massive Hendrickson hatch on the Farmington river….a hatch that was actually too good because of the overwhelming number of naturals. The trout rose steadily for two hours, but few fish were caught during that period, most being taken at the beginning and end when fewer bugs were on the water. I wound up landing nine trout from 11 to 16 inches, but the only fish I caught at the hieght of the hatch were a few salmon smolts. As a point of reference, the Hendricksons started hatching on April 15, and the fish are still avidly feeding on them.
In my experience, the fish continue to take advantage of nutrients and thus, feed through a hatch to the end. They may tend to become wary of surface items due to angling pressure as a hatch goes on. Also, feeding on duns varies with air temps and humidity, with fish rising more readily to duns when they have difficulty getting off water surface. The drake hatch, as a specific example on Penn’s, tends to be great fishing on Duns and emergers for the first couple days in any area, with wary fish by the end(6th or 7th day) of the hatch. Many times, it proves easier to take fish during the Drake hatch with other surface items, like sulfurs, caddis and spinners of Grey Foxes and March Browns. Tom
