- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – SNIP So I guess there’s more than one view around here. Gary Oh there are lots of views around here. Big game fishing sounds very attractive, but it is unlikely that I will ever do any. Like some other things, bonefishing, or stalking flats or mangroves for various exciting fish. My back would in any case almost certainly not be up to it. I have enjoyed reading about it, or hearing various reports from time to time though. I fear dry-fly fishing is a much more sedate affair. Just as exciting and interesting in its own way though. I hope you get the opportunity to do some.

Hi Mike, you are right about dryfly fishing being just as exciting as saltwater flyfishing. I remember my first trip saltwater flyfishing: 3 weeks in Grand Cayman and a lot of small tarpon to 25lbs. As the trip was drawing in, I started cringing as to how I would be able to get back on terms with the 1lb wild brownies in my local stream. Lo and behold, after 20 mins on the stream I had completely forgotten the saltwater battles, as I was totally immersed in fishing the dryfly.

J.S., I was in hawaii on the island of Oahu, I was a beginner to the sport of fly fishing. I looked and listened for anything that I could find on the art. I didnt find that much. However, I have seen shows on fly fishing where they were fly fishing for Bone Fish. There are definitely bone fish all over the hawaiian islands. Would probably have to look for the flats, of course, as that is where they usually hang out. I dont know the exact fly types they used, but they were there. I was in hawaii for 3 years in the military. It was a good long time of fishing, but like I said, not much for fly fishing. Also, there is a freshwater lake on Oahu that I did fly fish, but again, I was new into the whole fly fishing genre. The lake was stocked with Peacock Bass. Not very big from what I could see, but there were some lunkers in there, I am pretty sure. I have a buddy that is stationed out there right now, I will check with him to see if he can find anything out about it, specifically for the islands you mentioned. Cant promise anything, cause I dont know how much he will look, but I will drop it on him anyway.

Shannon, I always like to go to the local experts when I get to a new place. If you are fishing the Chesapeake, then you can’t go wrong with http://www.joebruce.com/ Its my favorite shop and Joe is well know for his ability to find and land fish. I live in Severn, MD but I only moved here in June of last year. The knowledge I’ve gained from the locals is incredible. BTW, we not only have some incredible saltwater action, but the fresh water (browns, brookies, rainbows and smallies) is all around you. Frank Reid

Soitenly! Look for a Garmin GPSIII+ /daytripper

Response:

The Garmin GPSIII+ typically acquires satellites and computes it’s initial position in less than a minute. The downloadable maps include lots of coastal data, markers, buoys, etc. I use one inland on streams, rivers and lakes. email me directly if you want more info. Also you might want to look at the usegroup : sci.geo.satellite-nav. Lots of experienced folks there as well.
I can put off buying the unit until spring although it would be convenient to have it sooner. Do you see anything changing in terms of new products or enhancements that would warrant waiting? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The Garmin GPSIII+ typically acquires satellites and computes it’s initial position in less than a minute. The downloadable maps include lots of coastal data, markers, buoys, etc. I use one inland on streams, rivers and lakes. email me directly if you want more info. Also you might want to look at the usegroup : sci.geo.satellite-nav. Lots of experienced folks there as well.
Response:

Hard to say. My personal expectation is that there will be a version available with more internal flash memory, sometime in the spring. The GPSIII+ has 1.44 megs in additional to the (good) base map. Take a look at www.joe.mehaffey.com . That’s sort of a "clearing house" for current GPS info. And, start looking at/participating in/ the newsgroup that I mentioned. Since this is not a germane subject for most flyfishers, email me directly for follow-on info.

Response:

For bluefish smaller than 4 pounds you can get away with 30 pound mason or similar hard mono. Anything bigger and you will wnat singlestrand wire. Cehck out any of the good knot books (Mclane or whoever) for ways to join wire to mono. For spanish mackerel heavy mono is fine. King macs wire. Northern pike will let you get away with mono. there are some who say wire is better because it is thinner. In my experience it just scares the fish due to shine. Use clear Mason. Do no use braided wire. No good at all.

I would like some advice on bite tippets for Blue Fish and other toothy critters – both fresh and saltwater. I have used various wire type leaders for spin fishing but have no experience with fly fishing for northerns, blue fish etc. Thanks Jim — Flyfish NC Gordon Churchill http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/3853

Hi Jim, I think most fly fishers use wire for Barracudas, Northern Pike, Sharks and Bluefish. For Billfish, Tarpon, Snook and Jacks most use heavy/hard mono. Bill Kiene Kiene’s Fly Shop Sacramento,CA,USA 800/4000FLY www.kiene.com

Be sure and read the article on "Gonzalo’s" under rec.outdoors.fishing.saltwater. Don’t think I’d mess with them from those other people’s experience.

Couple questions from a group newcomer: 1) Heading to Summit County in March – any suggestions, away from towns preferrably? 2) I need some cold-weather fishing gloves – again, any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Mitch Zemel
