Inexpensive 4-piece 4 wt rod recommendations?
Question:
Go to Cabelas. They have a number of low priced rods that will fit you needs. I have heard many good comments on them here and elsewhere. Crusty
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I personally would go on ebay and buy an old fiberglass rod. They cast dang near the same as bamboo, and cost a little less. Bamboo is an option to. It seems most graphite rods are all to well into fast action and all. I think this takes away from presentation. The old bamboos and fiberglass rods are great. I’ve been fishing an old heddon pal allot these days, with a #5DT. It’s probably the best small stream fly rod I own. I think I paid 40 bucks for it on ebay. — Tim Apple www.flyfishingaddict.com Hey All, I currently own a fairly fast action 9′ 6 wt rod that is too over-powered to manage a consistently delicate presentation with short casts on smaller trout streams. In response to this problem, I’ve been wondering about a 4-piece 4 wt rod that is as affordable as possible. I’m one of those very low budget fly fishers. I’m open to all suggestions for rods, as well as retailers online. Also, a thoughtful explanation for your recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ah, the trotting of the canards… I used to be a fan until that night in Marseilles when I had a grand on a mallard to place at 12-1. It was running neck and neck with the leader until the home stretch, where the goddam thing came up lame and couldn’t finish the race. That’s when I realized the whole thing was fixed. I have only posted to this group once, so I guess it would be fair to say I am a newbie. I guess I could also be considered a Lurker because I have continued to follow threads hear and there for the last couple months, as time permits, but I have not contributed. I can only say that nothing I have read would make me reluctant to post to ROFF. As a matter of fact, I would expect any group interested in Fly fishing to have a disproportionate number of curmudgeons. This is not meant as a slight, I enjoy and respect many crurmudgeons. When someone takes heat on this group, they usually deserve it and the criticism teaches newbies, like me, simple lessons. (Posting shamless marketing or large pictures is a no-no.) The lessons are also entertaining. My position as a Lurker will probably erode over time. At this point in time, my major limitation is time. My kids keep me quite busy and it is fun to be with them. I guess you could call them my primary hobby. Reading a few post here and there is quick and I can do it at odd hours. I sometimes cannot look at ROFF for weeks, so my contributions would be disjoint at best. I really enjoy trip reports and many are truly works of art. The only thing I find intimidating about ROFF would be to producing a a small whitefish trip report in a riffle loaded with quality trout. I have learned much from this group. (For example: I need to give the Henry’s Fork another try and now I know why it appears that I catch more than twice the number of trout when I use a dropper. I guess I can thank Bruce for both.) I will go fishing with my brothers in a few weeks and I hope the trip gives me enough material for a good report. The thing I need most to contribute to ROFF is content.

I feel for you. I tore a couple of big holes in my new breathables (in the thigh) back in June. I have some big patches and blobs of Aquaseal on them which although unsightly (not as unsightly as the wearer) do the job. I’m really intrigued by the sunpatch<sp? you referred to in an earlier post. I missed most of a day of fishing waiting for the Aquaseal to harden (and I did use the Cotol accelerant). I doubt there’s any product that can retreat Goretex (or the other breathable membrane products). Goretex is a thin membrane with really small holes in it. Any treatment would just clog the holes. You’re best bet is to find the big holes and fill them up with some kind of goo. I have heard about a treatment product (Nik Wax?) that can be used on the outer surface of things like jackets. This is applied to the outer layer (nylon, Cordura) to help shed water. I have reservations about using that on things that are supposed to be breathable – they might help water shedding, but would also block vapor flow. I would be really reluctant to use such a product on waders. –Stan
Response:
SunPatch has worked great for me, almost instant set in the sun. Unfortunately, last Monday night camping in the backcountry, I poked a hole in my Thermarest pad with a feed through needle knot tool tying on a new leader set up for a friend. It was 38 degrees, not good for sleeping directly on cold ground after a hard day. SunPatch may have worked great but will not set/cure ever until put in sun light. In the future I am carrying both, SunPatch and Aquaseal. Scott

look for "Tech Wash" by NikWax. The back label reads: "…gently removes dirt. Residue free, non detergent soap protects water repellancy of all breathable fabrics". I boat my wife a goretex coat a couple of years back and this was what the specialist shop recommened be used. They told me water repellancy is degraded when goretex gets dirty. As far as I understand goretex is a waterproof membrane as opposed to other products that are coatings applied to nylon or polyester.
I’ll have to try that. I usually just use Shout, but I don’t know if that helps protect water repellancy. BTW, you are correct about the Gore-Tex just being a membrane. It is sandwiched between a few layers of fabric because the actual Gore-Tex layer is very thin and is kind of like working with a piece of saran wrap. — Warren Findley www.geocities.com/troutbum_mt

Two things that might be of interest here Willi. Some people were asking about cleaning waders so here is that info. I tried getting it the other day, but Simms website was down. If you want to check out the website, just click on the technologies menu and then Gore-Tex fabric. At the bottom of that page are a bunch of questions. Click on them to get the answers. "For your Simms/Gore-Tex Waders: Use a pre-wash treatment, such as Shout. Clean waders, either in the bathtub or in the machine on gentle (in cold water). Allow to dry completely. Some stains, such as fly dressings or sap, may be untreatable, but will not affect the breathability of the product. For Gore-Tex Rainwear: Use a pre-wash treatment (such as Shout

BTW I have caught several Whitefish in that size range in the Clearwater while fishing for steelhead, but always have considered the pursuit of fishing records somewhat silly. Bob Weinberger
______ I understand what you’re saying but what many don’t know is, Charlie Brooks was retired military. The term, "no sweat" was common with him. Fishing for records for you, I imagine is silly and serves no purpose. In the early years, records helped our company and products. They still do. I don’t pursue them actively anymore or specifically, but should one come my way, I would honor the fish, and after the measurements, I now release them. You can do that now. One doesn’t need to kill a fish to make it a world record. That aside, thanks for the thoughts Bob. I’m going to have to check the record books for the present and see what the Whitefish "high water mark" is now, for the record. — Mr.G. http://www.gink.com "the sage continues"

Whitefish as table fare is much better than trout. The late/great Charlie Brooks always went after whitefish for dinner. Hated eating trout. Which some of know is a much better choice. Thing is, in the Madison are some of the largest whitefish known and in the surrounding area. I caught and released (to my error) a whitefish that exceeded five pounds while Charlie Brooks sat on the bank sipping a cold bottle of beer. In fact, that is all he carried in his wicker basket on his hip. It was always loaded with beer. "Biggest damned whitefish I’ve ever seen George!" he yells. As I quickly weigh it and release it. "How much it weigh?" he adds after another swig. "Five pounds two ounces," I shout back as I stagger to shore for a cold one. I walk up to Charlie who is enjoying a small fire I built, he and two more friends, one whom I now forget the name of but the other is Sam Melner of "Fly Fisherman’s Bookcase," Croton on the Hudson. "I think you just released a world record George," he adds matter of factly. "How would you know that?" I counter as I decap a brown, super-cold bottle of beer from the river. "I’ve been fishing those things my whole life and its the only damned fish worth a hoot for eating. That, was a big fish, I’m telling you." "Well, it so happens I have a diary here with all the fly fishing records it it," as I start thumbing through it. Under "Whitefish" I see that five pounds is indeed MORE than enough to establish a new world record. I turn the little manual around and hand it to Charlie. "Dang!" I laugh, "If you’re not right!" "No sweat George, only you and I need to know you did it." as he offers a toast to bump. We click bottles and Charlie finishes the beer. He returns the empty and pulls out another cold one. "It’s the memories man! It’s the memories!" We all sit back and laugh our hearts out. "Good show," adds Sam. True story. — Mr.G. http://www.gink.com "the sage continues"

The FAQ at Jon’s site is merely a collection of thoughts from various members, it is in no way an "official" charter. The site you cite is titled "Net User Guidelines and Netiquette" and is from one particular University. You even selectively took sentences from various sections. In the Usenet section, it does not even mention FAQs. It is CERTAINLY a good idea to read the FAQ, it’s probably even a nice thing to do, but it is in no way required. Announcing the 2nd Annual NC Spring Clave
Question:
It was not ffing – in was fly catching, and required very lttle effort or skill. However, a mid-night raid on such a place would be *more* than ethical. Dave L.
I wouldn’t recommend a midnight raid due to the dogs, the river keep and the twelve gauge.but I’m planning on staying in the guest cottage at Terry’s for the clave and will try my best to work something out. I will call him tomorrow and see what he says about groups, rates, discounts etc…The shop I guide for has a deal with Terry in which we guide anyone who wants to fish there. The fish are too huge to land alone so this is recommended. I have fished there a bunch and can assure you that there is nothing easy about landing a 6 pound Kamloops on a sz. 18 pheasant tail. The fishing is easy- if you use a cork pellet- but if you fish it according to the hatches and the mood of the fish its a damn fun time and a challenge. For a time this year I was nailing them on a sz. 18 sulphur parachute – it’ll make your knees shake watching a 26 inch brown sip down a fly that small. . My personal best was a 15 pound rainbow. I caught her on a sz. 16 beetle, barbless…..My funniest catch was a 20 some odd inch Kamloops that put me into the backing in one long run. It took the fly, turned tail and ran straight at me, jumped chest high into the air, bounced off a boulder in front of me and kept on hauling. She ran 60 feet in one run. The run was so violent I ended up tangled in the trees 50 feet downstream. I ran after her, pulled my line out of the trees, and tried to reel her in. Another run upstream, and the down…….I landed her after a long fight. Funny thing is, I was just showing my guest how to roll cast and didn’t expect to hook Granted, it may be fake, but it will have you shaking in your boots. By no means is it easy. Any how, enough rambling, I’ll let you guys know what Terry says tomorrow. I just decided that I’m going to fish there for a while in the evening if I can. I’ll post a report…… Tight lines…. That’s right nice of you Matt. I actually knew that you were a guide for that stretch of water from talking to Walt and from reading your emails on the NC list, but since we haven’t met, I didn’t want to be so bold as to ask a favor. However, I do have one suggestion. When you talk to Terry, tell him that ROFF consists primarily of well-kempt expert anglers who could bring in lots of future business due to their influence among the wealthy. As opposed to divulging the fact that ROFF is really just a rowdy bunch of profane cheapskates who will attack even a dogwood tree when sufficiently drunk.

I agree with Walt. I once belonged to a local ffing club. Three heavily stocked ponds with very big fish. After fishing there for awhile, I found out where the term "shooting fish in a barrel" came from. It was not ffing – in was fly catching, and required very lttle effort or skill. If they’re Orvis endorsed I’m sure Dave can pull some strings<g. — Charlie…
these waters, in a sense, are orvis endorsed. to fish them, you hafta arrange a guide trip at the orvis shop. I believe it’s $450.00. is it fake. well, in the sense that there ain’t no other stream in the state with fish like this…sure, it’s unreal, afterall, they are fed daily. are they big fish….well, they’re mighty damn big fish! kamloops, browns and rainbows, many well over 30". the biggest brookies i’ve ever seen, some 24"+. california golden trout in the 24" range. 100’s of fish between 12" & 24". it’s a sight to see, but it ain’t "real." does that mean i don’t fish it? hell, are you crazy? i’ll fish it every time i’m lucky enough to wrangle an invite, which appropriately, is just once this year. there is a thrill involved with a 30"+ fish on a 3wt…even if it is "fake." is it wise to sneak in there….go ahead boys…. make terry’s day, or should i say, make his wolves day! yup…wolves. btw, Terry is a very nice fellah who has one of the neatest homes you’d ever want to see. the interior is pure fly fishing motif…from stained glass windows, artwork, books, upholstery, and even the silver and crockery….totally cool. walt — Ezflyfish.com http://www.ezflyfish.com BRBG http://www.abebooks.com/home/BLUEBOOKS P.O. Do you think there’s a chance that if we told him what we’re planning (I’d be willing to give it a shot) that he might make certain allowances for us (reduced fee, no guide requirement, etc)? I think feeding the fish kinda crosses my own little line of what’s real and what’s fake, but as long as we’re gonna be in the area and all it would be nice to catch a really really big trout.

I don’t have a Web site suggestion. Instead, may I suggest a book: The Classic Guide to Fly-Fishing for Trout Charles Jardine ISBN 0-394-58719-7 It was published in 1991 in Great Britain, so it doesn’t have all the patterns you’ll come across, but it does have 60 full color pages of flies (about 8 flies per page) as well as a complete directory of fly dressings (i.e. what hook sizes and materials are used to tie each fly). For your viewing pleasure, I scanned a page of the book (warning: 200K image) and put it at: http://www.ipass.net/~stevez/images/flypics.jpg Any discoloration in fly patterns is likely an artifact of my scanner, not the author. I invite the input of experienced fly fishermen to comment on this book, but I love it. It is an absolutely beautiful hardcover book that I keep alternately on my coffee table at home and on the desk in my office. Steve Zimmerman

I am sending this to you in Email and also publicly apologizing to you in the newsgroup. I would like to ask that it be chalked up to a shitty day and let it slide. I will endeavor to never let my fingers hit the keyboard in here until my brain is in gear and my attitude is supportive no matter the question. Please, once again, accept my humble apologies. >can someone tell me what the child support percentage is in SC for 3 children?
Sorry, I don’t know about that. In my state, it’s a formula combined with whatever expenses the custodial parent dreams up, which are never questioned. >> also, is there any restriction on visitation (such as children cannot stay overnight with a parent if they are living with someone they are not married to)?<<
I truly can’t fathom this. I would think that this would be something that has to be put in the decree at the request of a parent at the time of the final hearing, but this is my guess. My husband and I lived with each other before getting married and his ex-wife is living with someone. It’s probably the only thing we haven’t tried to hang each other over! >> if the divorce order is in one state and the parent moves to another does the original order stay in effect or can the parent get the it changed to the new state?<<
It hinges on which state the children are residents of in Colorado. If we had custody and moved out of state, we could petition the courts to change the case to the new district we were in after we had established residency there. However, if we move without the children (non-custodial), then the court with jurisdiction remains the same. There is a group on the net called alt.support.child-support (I think that’s close). Although they spend alot of time just griping, they can be of some help on occasion. I’d post your question to them. One other thing, my husband and I had to go back to court when Cheri (Jeff’s ex) was thinking about moving out of state with his kids. Bottom line: if it isn’t prohibited in the orginal orders (or subsequent orders), we can’t stop her. We finally negotiated a truce which forbids her from taking them out permanently, but it wasn’t easy or cheap. >please respond by e-mail as i haven’t been able to pick up these groups on a regular basis. >
I’ll post and email. Good luck, Lynn

I missed the original post (as sometimes happens with my list, too) because for some reason my reader ALSO refuses to let me in for several days at a time. Believe me, I try to read at least once a day. You can tell by how verbose I am. Anyway, you are welcome here. The response you got was not typical. Lucas, what got up your butt? I know you’re opinionated, but you usually aren’t nasty! Best wishes. Hope you get over that bug, Lucas. Pam For the info of all newsgroup readers, a good site with discussion groups (including one for steps) as well as a legal database of state by state info is at: <http://www.divorcenet.com> (add /board6.html for the step discussions)

First, we are not lawyers…. It sounds alot like you are fishing for a way to slap an ex…. Second, since you deserve the advice you get, here goes: (two face mask on) for 3 children the percentage is 50% of your income for the life of the children. This means that the amount you have earned since they were born, you divide into a monthly income and 50% of that is child-support…. As for restrictions on visitation: it depends on whether the other party is also living with someone. The children automatically become wards of the person who has another adult in the house with them. Especially if the other person is of the same sex. If your ex now has a live-in lover, you will need to either find a lover of your own sex, or hand over the children immediately. If it is you that now has the lover, demand immediate custody. Oh, of course, the divorce decree can be moved to any jurisdiction you wish. Even if you do not live there. We had our decree moved to mexico, because we found a judge who could be bribed to increase the bastards child support from a measly $105 per month to $1050 per month. I would strongly suggest moving to Japan if you are the non custodial parent. They dont believe in child support. ~please respond by e-mail as i haven’t been able to pick up these ~groups on a regular basis. If you are unable to pick up this newsgroup on a regular basis, it is because you are too busy to bother. This is an alt.support group, not an alt.free.legal.advice group. ~thanks! You are NOT welcome…. ~jl…@mindspring.com If you want some support as a step-parent, drop in and see us sometime. —>First, we are not lawyers…. It sounds alot like you are fishing for a way —>to slap an ex…. I don’t know about the rest of you. YOU are not only apparently not a lawyer, you are not deserving of participation in a group that includes the word support. What kind of an idiot responds to a simple request for information as if it were a personal insult? Or do you have nothing better to do than shoot off your mouth? As it happens, this woman you have taken upon yourself to police is about to become a step-parent. Her step-children are about to be taken by my ex-wife to South Carolina. She is asking for information that anyone in South Carolina could easily look up in a public library. Most any idiot could recognize the difference between this and legal advice, but you appear to not be just any idiot. You must be an especially depraved idiot, too sucked up in some kind of bitterness to notice. We could look up the information ourselves, except that we’re not IN South Carolina. One would think that a newsgroup with a name like alt.support.step-parents would be a place to get support from other step-parents. I think a reasonable person would assume that. Oh, but I forget, you don’t act like a reasonable person, you act like a self-evidenced depraved idiot. I suppose YOU would not wonder how your own situation might change as a result of the decisions that other people make. You would just pony up whatever demands were placed on you. Or else you would fly across the country and look up the information yourself. But then, you seem to be an idiot, so I wouldn’t be surprised. Only an idiot would attempt to read an entire set of motivations out of one posting of less than 15 lines. Or perhaps you are psychic! Let’s see, from your post…. —>If you are unable to pick up this newsgroup on a regular basis, it is —>because you are too busy to bother. ….you are able to tell the reason she doesn’t get the newsgroup regularly. How amazing! Except, you blithering idiot, that her ISP tends to time out before she can download all the postings, and so she tends to lose a lot of them. And this one takes a little more reading between the lines, but there seems to be a pattern: —>They dont believe in child support. So, Mr. or Ms. or Mx. Psychic, you probably are assuming that this is someone trying to get out of paying child support. Couldn’t POSSIBLY be, could it, that this is someone who is trying to help BUDGET for something that she is not forced into? No, that would be too human, something that a depraved idiot is in no position to understand. It is assholes like you who give the Internet a bad name. If the newsgroup is for support, then be supportive or go somewhere that welcomes people who have nothing better to do with their feeble lives than flame. My thanks to you who actually provided support. You would seem more representative of this group than this one waste of space on the planet. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could actually support each other? And I apologize for taking up bandwidth. A public slander deserves a public reply, however.
