Fishing near Colton,OR

Question:

I am going to a wedding at Camp Colton in Colton,OR (near Oregon City about an hour outside of Portland). Anyone know of any good/decent fishing around there? I read some of the older posts but I don’t know where those rivers are in relation to Colton. Thanks in advance

You are practically on top of the Clackamas and a reasonable drive from the Sandy. Both are producing record numbers of steelhead and a few Springer’s are showing up too. visit www.ifish.com for latest reports from the local riff raff. numerous Oregon fishing links can be found at http://blueox.uoregon.edu/~dmason/Mckenzie/linkdb/results/yokels.html weekly fishing reports at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/RecReports/Fishing.html and the Oregon Council of Fly Fishers has a nice set of links to reports and river levels at http://oregonfff.org/ click on "contents… Enjoy your visit… Cos

Kamloops in spring

Question:

I intend to spend three weeks in and near the Kamloops, B.C. area in the spring or early summer, 2002 and would appreciate any information that may maximize my fishing success and pleasure. I will probably spend most my time on the lakes, but will want to hit a few of the smaller rivers and streams as well. I plan to take both a pontoon boat and a back-packable float tube. And, I have a sturdy 4 wheel vehicle. I will be living in my travel trailer, which I will probably park in an RV park some of the time, but can live in it in a wilderness environment for up to ten days. Any suggestions as to where to go would be appreciated. Ron Matson

Response:

The regulations for BC freshwater fishing are at http://www.monday.com/fishing/. Go to region 3, Thmpson-Nicola. General regulations state there is no fishing in any stream from jan 01 to June 30. Exceptions are listed in the regulaiton booklet. With the iming of your trip, I suspect that stream fishing may be limited I wouldn’t worry about that as th lake fishing is quite excellent, challenging, and rewarding. A pontoon boat will be perfect, but I suggest you get an anchor for staying still while working weedy areas. Float tubes are good for smaller lakes, but nothing beats a pontoon boat. I suggest looking at three books. "Kamloops: An angler’s study of the Kamloops Trout" by Steve Raymond. ISBN 1-878175-734. "Morris and Chan an Fly Fishing Trout Lakes" by Skip Morris and Brian Chan. ISBN 1-57188-181-6 "Fly Patterns for Stillwaters" by Phil Rowley ISBN 1-57188-195-6 The above books all were written by authors with intimate knowledge of fishing in the Kamloops area. Get these three books,a nd you will have all the informtion you need about where to start fishing, techniques, and fly patterns. When you get there, local fly shops will be more tham willing to let you know which lakes are on or not. Also, try the Sportfishng on the Fly Forum area at http://www.sfotf.com/forum/ and go to the flyfishing forum. My experience with this board is that is very helpful and used bymany peopl who fish the Kamloops area. I love fishing that area, and get out there once or twice a year. I am hoping to spend a week in May in the area as well. Tim Lysyk

Question:

I fished the upper Arkansas several years ago upstream of Buena Vista. I remember public access was limited but locals directed me to some public water accessed at a bridge just up the highway a few miles from Buena Vista that was fun.  I got a few nice ones and lots of small ones.  Ask around at the shops. -al

I will be spending a week in the Upper Arkansas river valley Aug 5 – 10. Will be with Wife and three small kids (to small to Fly fish), so at best I’ll have an hour or two a day to fish.  Any advice on places to fish, flys to use and local shops to offer advice? Thanks for the help, Dan

I went to the Arkansas this weekend, but north of Buena vista on Hwy. 24.  It was too cold and rainy to fish, and I was discouraged by an utter lack of public access to the river.  I believe that the Arkansas near Salida provides good fishing and more public access.  I think all the normal patterns will work in the summer… good luck, — MORGAN P. My solution is to copy the message in its entirety and e-mail it back to the sender.  I doubt if it does much good, but it sure makes me feel better.

Tip of the day

Question:

TIP OF THE DAY; Studying insects helps anglers Knowing when aquatic insects should hatch gives you an advantage. Near the end of April, I fished a stretch of the Whitewater River = expecting a hatch of Hendrickson mayflies. I knew from experience that the adults show up on the water’s surface sometime between 2 = and 5 p.m. The day was perfect for good mayfly action, dark and ugly. At 11 a.m., I started wading upcurrent,  fishing  streamers. They didn’t = work. Next I dredged deep pools with nymphs. Bottom-hugging snags ate my nymphs. The trout were sulking.  A few tentative taps at my nymph pattern kept me awake. By 3 p.m., after 4 hours of hard  fishing,  I had caught and released only = four small browns. I probably would have given up then if I hadn’t known there would be a hatch. Just as I was beginning to wonder if the hatch really would occur, I roundeda bend and spied a platoon of 11- to 14-inch browns frol= icking in an ankle-deep riffle. They attacked. Every other drift through the riffle brought a strike – on each of the four different=  Hendrickson dry-fly patterns I used.

Need advice: Fly fishing at Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

Question:

Hello, I will have the opportunity to go fly fishing in Jasper Nation Park (Alberta, Canada) and could surely use any advice on fishing in the area. I am familiar with some of Alberta’s central streams and prefer to fish small streams, usually for browns and rainbows.  Any recommendations on ’small’ trouty streams in Jasper?   It seems everyone I talk to fish the lakes (Maligne, Moab etc) only.   Being both boatless & floattube-less lakes lose their appeal quickly. As comedian Stephen Wright(sp) states "There’s a fine line between fishing and standing on the shoreline looking like an idiot." Any recommendations or suggestions would be highly appreciated. Response:

I think your best bet is Maligne, you might also want to try Medicine lake.  You can fish it from the boulders on the far shore and get into some decent fish.  I am planning on fishing Maligne next weekend, I’ll let you know how it turns out. Cam Forster St. Albert

Question:

Hi, I hit the "D" key instead of the "S" key by mistake so lost the e-mail address and name of the guy I was talking with about flyfishing Puget Sound. I was just wondering how things went for you.  Did you try the area near Shilshole?  Catch anything?  What type and how big?  See any Salmon or Steelhead?  What flys did you use?  Try any shiney streamers? Another spot was across the sound near the Straights of Juan De Fuca, off some of the jettys and sand bars out there.  Makes a nice weekend trip when the salmon are running.  Nothing like double-hauling a 9wt line on a two-handed rod in a stiff breeze casting a 6" streamer.  I can taste the salt on my face just thinking about it.
