Fly fishermen find wifely charms provide new lure By Michael Hornsby, countryside correspondent.     Male anglers are going to indelicate lengths to test the age-old belief on the riverbank that female rivals possess some unfair magic enabling them to hook more and bigger fish.     Scientific research (albeit disputed) provides some support for the idea, suggesting that female pheromones, the bodily scents that attract members of the opposite sex, may work equally well in luring salmon and trout.     Anglers now claim to have proved the theory by incorporating strands of their wives’ pubic hair in the material used to make fishing flies. What is a good knot for joining 2 lines together?

Question:

Hi, I have been fishing for about 2 months now.  Can you recommend a good knot for tying two lines together, which are of different thicknesses.  I want to tie a 40lb leader to the mainline.   The knot I’ve tried wasn’t good.  I have lost a lot of good fish because of this, I was using the blood knot.  I found that the weakest point in my tackle is usually the knot that joins the leader to the mainline and is the first thing that gives way most of the time. ——- thanks

Response:

The surgeons knot and the uni knot in all it’s forms are what I use. The surgeons knot is simple and low profile and works well with leader attachment. I use it to tie leader to line of less than 20 lb and no more than 4:1 for the leader. I use a Uni loop to tie on the jig or hook, and for everything with lines over 20 lb. If you test with a gauge you will learn to do 90% strength ties consistently. This is probably more important than the actual knot used. Consistent ties. Where I fish low visibility of the line/leader is more important than anything else. The water is shallow and clear. The surgeon knot is the one I use.  It is tied by forming two overhand knots. pretty simple but effective.

A surgeon’s knot is a good one for this, as is a nail-knot. The surgeon’s knot is easy to tie (just overlap the ends of your lines by about 4-8" and make a double overhand knot) but the nail knot has the benefit that both the tag ends are constricted by the wraps. (Its basically the same as a hook snell, just using another line instead of a hook.) Any decent fishing or knot reference should have instructions for both. Blood knots are fine for light-weight line, but they get much harder to seat correctly as the line weight goes up. — <signature <! impressive references and witty saying goes here </signature Before you buy.

Response:

I use the uni-knot.  You overlap the ends of the lines, tie a uni-knot in one, then the other.  Pull them tight and cut off the tag ends. Very easy, makes a small knot and doesn’t come loose. Tom Kadlec The surgeon knot is the one I use.  It is tied by forming two overhand knots. pretty simple but effective.

Response:

I agree with the uni-knot…i’ve used it forever it seems. Gives 90% line strength and is compatable with different line thickness. Berkly created this knot years ago. It’s very easy to tie. You can learn how to tie it from instructions in every pkg. of line they sell.

Response:

Any experience with the Orvis fly school?

Question:

Went to the Orvis School in Vermont. Got my money’s worth but in retrospect not a neccesity to learn. Specifically helpful with casting technique. Get a good book on the basics of fly fishing before you go to any class anywhere. Then decide if you really want to go. Great sport.

I just completed the Orvis Fly Fishing school at their corporate headquarters in Vermont.  Most of the time is spent on the mechanics of casting (including many different types.  Only about 1/2 day si spent on the river, but you can go on the river after the class. I thought it was great.  I feel like I learned so much on reading water, tying the knots, casting and the equipment, and even bugs. I would recommend it! Mac

Of course Avi, I think you should travel a little farther out west and attend one of my schools at the Arcularius Ranch near Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra, or at the Clearwater House on Hat Creek in Northern California.  The classes are small & I understand the instructors are excellent ;^  (I’m one of the instructors). How can I answer your question delicately…  NO- it might be alot of fun but there is another way to learn flyfishing. Get to know some of the local oldtimers in the streams where you live.  This is not necessarily easy to do but there are some great benefits- they know the waters local to you, know the hatches and patterns and best of all they can become friends to go fish with. One suggestion- a flyfisherman with all the gear (ie "decked out by cabela’s") doesn’t always know whats going on. Best wishes- you’ve selected a wonderful new hobby. Lee Clore "flyfishing is life"

Response:

I have been to the school in evergreen, CO. You are right it is costly. I HAVE BEEN FLYFISHING FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS AND GOT SOMETHING OUT OF THE PROGRAM. BUT, THIS PROGRAM I SUGGEST FOR THE NEW COMER ONLY.IT IS BASIC. HOWEVER, THE STAFF IS GREAT.  THEY TAKE YOU TO A STOCKED POND THAT IS FILLED WITH FISH IN A WELL DEVELOPED AREA(YOU CAN WATCH TV THROUGH THE WINDOW OF THE HOUSES THAT ARE ALL AROUND}. fOR MY MONEY GET AN ORVIS GUIDE AND TELL THEM YOU WANT A HALF DAY OF LAND INSTRUCTION. tHEM GO TO THE CHESMEN CAYON TO FISH. NOT THE SOUTH PLATEE. READ/READ/READ THEN YOU WILOL GET MORE FROM THE INSTRUCTION

Response:

You had better believe it.  I went to VT for mine…

Response:

It depends on where you live.  Orvis has schools all over the country; go to the one nearest you.  I got started several years ago by going to the Orvis school near NYC in the Catskills.  They teach you the basics, with emphasis on casting on a trout pond.  I then hired one of the instructors (who, it turned out, went to high school with my wife) to take me onto the Beaverkill.  As a newbie, you don’t need the challenge of Rocky Mountain fishing.  Start in a river where you’ll likely catch fish, then move up to the harder (and more expensive) stuff.

Hi Chuck I always use the same liquid soap I have for washing dishes, not the powder stuff for the dish washing maching.  Be sure to get the inside rinsed thoroughly or you can get a real bad rash when you wear them if the soap residue is not removed. Sage clinics?

Question:

I’m new to fly fishing. Been reading, watching videos, practicing casts in the yard. A local shop is hosting a Sage clinic next month. Anyone have experience with these clinics? Are they worthwhile for a beginner? Thanks, Barbara

Response:

Barbara,    Yes absolutely!! Go for it!  It will save you years of trial and error and years of correcting bad habits.  Iteach fly fishing schools for Orvis on the West Coast and I wish these kind of schools had been around when I started!!  Usually they will provide the equipment for the class so you don’t have to (and shouldn’t) make a purchase until after you get some basic skills and can try out various rods to see which one feels best to you.  Casting a fly rod is not instinctive, but it is also not hard to learn.  Once you understand the dynamics of the cast it will make more sense.  As far as videos go in my opinion the Mel Krieger video "Essence of FlyCasting (vol. 1)" is the best.  If you haven’t seen it do so.  Keep at it.                                                           Good Fishing!                                                                     Dan

I attended a Sage casting clinic in Santa Fe a few years back, and spent a hot afternoon practicing on a soccer field.  The instructors were good and, in my opinion, the clinic was well worth the $30 or $35 fee. Although casting is only a small part of fly fishing, good instruction is worth its weight in gold to a beginner. My only advice would be to bring along a lightweight glove– my casting hand was blistered at the end of the day!
