I am more familiar with a couple of areas north of Glendive.  Intake is about 35 mile north and the Confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri is farther yet (N. Dakota fishing license required there). Also near the bridge at Sidney MT.  {If they ever give the state of Montana an enema, Sidney is where they will stick the hose.  Hell, even the birds fly over Sidney upside-down because there isn’t anything there worth shittin on.}  The fishing is done from shore. You cast out so far that you have to call the Tower for Clearance to Launch first, then "whip" your rod back, stop, retrieve the slack and repeat.  Water depth is anywhere from 2 to 15-20 feet.  Time of day doesn’t really matter.  I am not sure on when the legal season starts, but I was in that area during the last week of May last year, and fish were being caught!  I lived in that part of the country during the 80s (drove tanker trucks in the oil patch), and paddlefishing was the first riverside party of the year.  In fact, it always seemed like most of the people that were at Intake, were there more for the party than fishing.  Whatever you do, DO NOT get caught doing anything illegal, including having an un-tagged fish in your possession.  The local Judge is an avid outdoorsman and throws the book at game violations….No, I never had to appear in his court for anything – he is a good friend of mine and I know his attitude. — All fishermen are liars ‘cept you n me, and I’m starting to have doubts about you!

Despite all sorts of weird problems and NT idiosyncracies, it’s been rolling along not too badly.  So to cut to the chase, I got to knock off work around 3:00pm on Friday.  My fishing buddy begs off so I head up to the Grand alone.   First a quick stop at Grindstone, met John and he mentioned an access point well downstream of where I normally fish.   OK, new spot – I’m game. After driving by it the first time, I find it and it is a very pretty spot with an old bridge that has been closed to traffic.  The river is fairly wide here so two or three guys can fish the same flat without crowding one another.  There’s one guy fishing already and fish rising all around the flat.  While I’m getting my shit together, he pulls in two fish, one of a half decent size.  We chat when I get down to the water and he recommends small – #16 and under.  This is a late season tactic, early on most of the fish can be taken on #14s and larger. Anyway, I figure since he’s catching fish, I’ll follow suit.  Without going into a long song ‘n dance, I must have hooked up twenty chubs. Most of the rising fish were chubs and some were of a fair size 8+" so it wasn’t always easy to tell the chubs from the browns.  Plus the chubs were so aggressive, they’d often take the fly before it got to the brown I was aiming for. I must of looked like I needed help as he frequently offered advice and instructions on how to set the hook, present a fly, etc.  I was there almost an hour after many chubs, I finally took my first brown on a #20 caddis.  I didn’t really go for his "small is better" philosophy and standing around, I could see larger insects coming off. Just upstream of me, a brown lunged at an emerging caddis and missed. The caddis flew toward me and I caught it – tan body, size #14, dark spotted wing – perfect Kings River Caddis.  On went a #14 KRC and good things started to happen.  After a few browns, I caught one very large chub with what appeared to be spines on it’s head and a pink hue to the scales.  Afterward, I looked it up at home and the spines were tubercles – the fish was in its spawning colours.  It was a pretty fish but I was getting fed up of the chubs. To solve the chub problem, I tied on a min-brown streamer.  After about ten casts I’d hooked up six or seven fish.  This went on for about half an hour and along the way, I managed to pick up one nice one amongst the smaller browns.  After I landed the nice one, the other guy announces that he’s going back to his car to get some streamers.  After about 20 or so browns, my poor little mini was wrecked – it was the only one I had left.  I moved to the other side of the bridge and took about another half-dozen on a Little Brown Trout before the thunder started up and I headed home. If you plan on fishing the bitterroot, fish in late july or august.  Our snow pack is 160% of normal and run off should last through early july.  Here is a couple of Outfitters and shops that can give you more information. It should be noted that water is being rapidly released from behind dams on the Missouri in anticipation of major run-off..so it may be having an some impact on the Missouri as a tailwater fishery….here in Missoula we are being asked to prepare for something on the level of between a 100 year and 500 year event once the snow begins to melt…

Bitterroot is running over 1100 cfs today. Thats not bad but it ain’t great and it has been rising (from 800 cfs on saturday). The Clark Fork is already over 600 cfs and is pretty muddy. Missouri below Holter has been around 8000 cfs for awhile now in anticipation of the melt, which by the way has NOT started yet (in earnest). In fact, it is trying to spit snow outside right now! — Brian D. Personally I fish with the Orvis PM-10 865-4 ($485) which is an 8 1/2 ft 5wt. 4 piece rod.  There is now a 9 foot version of this rod available which will give you a little better mending, but I like the one I have. This is a great fast action rod with a delicate tip for the South Island and many of the streams & rivers of the north.  If you’re going to be fishing the rainbow runs up the feeder streams from the big lakes in the North Island, you might want a 9′ 7wt for some of the big streamers used there.  The gentleman I teach our schools with, Dean Schubert, has spent 12 months out of the last 5 years fishing the South Island of New Zealand and he prefers the PM-10 906-4 (9′ 6wt.4 piece $485).  A 4 piece rod in  8 1/2  to 9 ft. length is a good choice especially if you’re trekking though the country.  I wouldn’t suggest a rod lighter than a 5 due to the size of the trout and the need to be able to pressure the fish authoritatively at times (tough to do with a 2, 3, or 4 wt.).  Another rod that works well and is a medium fast action is the Orvis HLS RM "Spring Creek Traveler ($300 – 9ft. 5wt. that really casts a 6 wt. line).The 25 yr. "any way you can break it" guarantee doesn’t hurt either. I would think about a SAGE 389-3LL (lifetime warranty!), 3piece for better transport which might be great for longer hikes or helico= pter transports in NZ. The 3 wt line is delicate enough not to spook the fish but is heavy enough to carry a trout fly well (except = very heavy streamers). The 8ft9inch length is great for roll-casting. It has a medium fast action with lots of power and delivers fl= ies on long leaders with ease and will protect your tippet if you get the real big ones which are native to NZ. You can feel the loa= ding of the rod very nicely, which does not mean that the rod is whippy or slow. I fish it with a 3wtDT/F line (Cortland, of course)=

Dylan,     I have never fished NZ before but I would say that your best bet for the trout that I have read about is a 3 – 7 wt rod ( ah heck, get one of each ). Use the lighter rods on the spring creeks and the heavier rods for big water and windy conditions. I’d say either a 3, 6 or a 4, 7 combo would be nice and I would lean to the 3, 6 end. If you could only have one rod I would choose a 5 wt with 8-9 ft length.   As far as brands go, I would look to the British Commonwealth if NZ is a member because a rod imported from the US is going to be very expensive. Hardy and Partridge make bamboo and graphite fly rods and of course Hardy makes wonerful reels that are advertised as lifetime guaranteed. Partridge also makes great hooks. They are expensive here in the US but I pay for them because I like them.   From the US Orvis, Sage, Thomas and Thomas, Loomis, Scott et al all make great products. I personally use Orvis and Sage products. Good Luck Chuck Abbott

I fished the N. Fork Saturday and found only Smallmouth Bass. Really good ones, too, but no trout. Water was gin clear and warm.  I fished the Yankee Jim access east of Colfax.  Got buzzed by a Timber Ratltler, saw some homeless-types panning, and generally was disappointed. Am I selling this river short?  Is there beter action upriver around Mumford Bar, and if so, how is the access? It seems like it could be a good resource and I know a portion of the river has Wild Trout status. Any info would be greatly appreciated. John Wallace

Hi John- The N.Fork American is a neat river. As you found out, there are some nice smallies out of Colfax. In the fall and early summer you’ll find rainbows and browns up and down the system as far as Lake Clementine. As the water warms the trout move upstream, into the springs, or into the deeper waters of the lake.      To get into consistant (small but plentiful) summer trout you’ll have to hike in at one of the trails near Royal Gorge or get permission to access the river at The Cedars just south of Donner Summit (drive down the dirt rd past Serene Lakes and ask at one of the cabins.    The timber rattle snake you saw is really a north pacific rattler. They do bite but generally go out of their way to avoid you. Don’t bother ‘em, they belong here (the browns and smallmouth don’t!).    Wild waters, Ralph Cutter —
