Boy Scouts FF Merit Badge

Question:

I noticed that the Boy Scouts have started a FF Merit Badge, and I see an opportunity for our TU Chapter to do a little community outreach. Before I start asking local BSA people about how we can help, I was hoping that maybe some ROFFers involved with the Boy Scouts can offer suggestions.   I was thinking about maybe a group outing.  Maybe there’s a Boy Scout Camp with some good water on it, or something. Scott

It’s a good thing my new Cabela’s clearance moleskin shirt sheds nasally- ejected coffee like water off a duck’s ass, or I would be really pissed right now :)   Scott

Response:

A group outing makes the most sense.  Contact your local Scout office and volunteer.  Definitely, if there’s a Scout camp nearby that would be an ideal opportunity because they are heavy on merit badges during camp.  On the off chance that they already offer the program at camp, remember that not all the boys can make it to camp, so it would be an excellent gesture to offer a separate program. You can get some good info here: http://www.bsaflyfishing.com/

Thanks, Stan.  I’ll let you know what we come up with. Scott

Response:

I served my term as assistant scoutmaster and have helped do this before there was a flyfishing badge.  It was just a fishing badge at the time and three of us did it for the scouts in our sons troop and one other. Call the local counsel (there on the web) and get a list of the troops near you.  They will have the names and phone numbers of the troop Scoutmasters.  Call the troop leaders and tell them what you are willing to do.  They will be all over you.  They are always looking for and welcome help. The scouts have booklets that detail the steps for earning every merit badge.  The emphasis is to have the scouts do all the work; your role is to be teacher and advisor. You can run the program for the whole troop or for just a couple of boys, depends on how many are interested. It’s the boys who decide if they want to get the badge. If your names on the list as an advisor some boys will seek you out. Some of the things we did were:  1.) Gave hands on demos on fly tying at one of their regular meetings.  We started using a parachute cord and an 8/0 hook and then let them go with the six vices and various materials we brought. They all managed to tie a couple of flies.  2.) Depending on where they meet you can bring in some rods and give casting instructions. 3.) You can let them come to your house and work at your bench and tie a few flies. .  You have to have at least two boys there at a time, no one on one instruction is allowe.  Let them see you stuff, explain how it works and maybe cast some in your back yard.  This is the point where some of them become lifetime flyfishers.  4.) You take them on an outing.  This part may educate you as much as them.  Pick a spot that safe and has catchable fish.  I wouldn’t count on a lake at a Boy Scout Camp having any cacheable fish. This is where you will need more help.  Get more volunteers for the trip one on one instruction is a big help here.    Twenty wild kids on a river with fly rods, wading, throwing rocks, and just being boys. It’s a great experience.  I cannot recommend it enough. .     – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I noticed that the Boy Scouts have started a FF Merit Badge, and I see an opportunity for our TU Chapter to do a little community outreach. Apparently it will cost $15,000 to print up all the booklets and the scouts are currently seeking donations to defray that cost. Mu

There’s one on the White river in central WI.  Great hex hatch too.  Don’t know about a dozen or so scouts flailing the water in the dark though. :) Wolfgang

A noble quest, but I don’t think I’d wanna be the responsible party that hands them a fish hook or anything else that could potentially put me on the defendent end of a PI suit when somebody sticks a hook in his eye.   Maybe a dozen pairs of cheap safety glasses would be a good investment. Call me paranoid, Joe F.

Both TU and the Scouts have mechanisms to deal with insurance issues.   Safetly glasses should be mandatory.  I won’t cast without them.  I also walk around with a whistle in my vest, but I’m paranoid. Scott

Wiscoy Creek runs right through Camp Sam Wood right near Pike, NY.

It’s been my limited experience that should anything unfortunate happen, TU, BSA, the rodmaker, the hook manufacturer, and you personally will get named in a suit.   Sure, you’d probably get out of any liability, but it’ll still cost a few shiny nickles in legal fees.   Lawsuits are a bitch for the innocent.   Didn’t mean to get so serious about it, but being married to a (former) property/casualty insurance agent will do that to you.  :-) Joe F.

Thanks.  There’s also a pretty nice campground right on the Eastkoy that might be suitable.  Not many tent spots, though.  Seems taken up by permanent RVs Scott

well, I don’t know about good water compared to other areas, but in NJ there’s the Big Flat Brook that goes through Stokes State Forest which has an adjacent Boy Scout Camp. The BFB is known for decent trout FFing. Rob

TR-Cohos and Cutts

Question:

I fished Hood Canal yesterday with my fatherinlaw. We arrived at the beach at about 10:00 and just after getting our rods set up, my fatherinlaw was trying to set up our drift with the tide when I noticed a couple of coho rolling on the surface. I immediately started casting an ‘experimental’ floating candle fish pattern and they were all over it, unfortunately the line fouled around the hook. I switched to a dry fly and again they were all over it. I caught about 10-12 coho and 6-7 sea-run cutthroat in about 4 hours of fishing. The best fish of the day was about a 3-4 lb coho that launched itself about 4-5 times, and the best cutthroat was a feisty one about 16". Most of the fish were caught of a dry fly, which is just an absolute rush when they take it. This was my fatherinlaw first time flyfishing in 21 years, he caught one 14" cutt and had several other strikes. He said he had a great time and he will do more flyfishing. Boy it feels good to get somebody interested in the sport. Darin

Darin: I lived in Lilliwaup for a few years, and fished the Hama Hama almost daily for sea run cutts and steelhead (fall and winter runs). Occasionally we’d putt out into the Canal proper when the salmon were running (well, ‘cept for the doggies – they came up river to us ;-) Where on the Canal did you put in? /daytripper – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I fished Hood Canal yesterday with my fatherinlaw. When we went passed Point No Point there were boats everywhere. There were also about 3-4 off of Point Hannon (Hoods Head). Where we fished there were none. We had all the water and all the fish to ourselves.

How does Point No Point come by its name? — visit my web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~royalwulff/

We actually put in in Port Townsend, some bright idea my fatherinlaw had <g, and motored down from there. We fished just a little south of the H.C. bridge. Darin

You’re not kidding! It was 1 1/2 hours each way. We could’ve had another 2 hours fishing if we’d gone to a closer ramp. You ever fish further south in the Canal?

I tried the zoo humpie fishery at Hoodsport one evening after work a couple of years ago. Lining up with 20-30 other guys looking for that 1 fish is not my idea of fun. I lasted about a 1/2 hour before I called it quits. Long drive from PT for a 1/2 hr fishing. Other than that, no, I haven’t fished further south, except for the Dose, Duck, and the Hamma rivers. Darin

Response:

Hey Darin,   On the Kitsap County side of the bridge turn left and go north about 1 mile and there is Salisbury (sp) Point. I do believe it is a park but they have an excellent boat ramp.  In addition you may want to look at the Point no Point area to fish.  Lots of fish being caught from the beach and boats. I couldn’t entice any to my fly rod but I saw a few other flyfishers catch em.  Primarily humpies ( in the ocean phase no hump) and silvers. Dave —

What I remember fishing and working in the area over a decade ago, there is some fishing in the upper White and Black Rivers outside the reservation and on a small lake southeast of Pine Top, past the ski resort (don’t have any maps handy).  I never fished the Little Colorado River northwest of Pine Top.  If you want to fish on the Apache Reser- vation, namely the lower White and Black Rivers and upper Salt River, you need to get a permit from the Tribe at White River (town) on the reservation, southeast of Pinetop. You should check with the Arizona Department of Game and Fish at: http://www.gf.state.az.us/ I can only remember fly-fishing for small mouth bass in the upper Black River, USFS lands east of the reservation, and didn’t have much luck then, but the country is beautiful. Good luck. –Scott–

You can indulge in both, as you please.  The larger lakes have boats for rent, but get there early if you’re going on the weekend.  This is a popular area!  There are plenty of  high country waters, but I think you’ll enjoy the White Mountain Apache Reservation lakes the most.  They have a very pro-active conservation program, and have several lure-only, and catch & release or slot limit waters.  You can even rent a lake for your own amusement if you want to blow a few hundred dollars.  Here’s a link to their site: http://www.wmatoutdoors.com/index.htm Enjoy your visit! Walked to the top of the mount and shouted for all to hear: Tony G. the troll is back, ignore him he may go away.

Response:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –     Vote for Nader! The man is real. I aint posted nuthin in  a long time cause I been too busy an I was spendin too much time at the computar there.  Plus the little lady didnt say nuthin but I could tell she was gettin pissed cause I wasnt payin enuff attentsion to her.  Usally anyways when I do talk on the computar I talk about fishin an huntin an stuff that pisses me off about them two things there.  An I aint just a reguler guy that says stuff but Im a meower an I got the 3133t from that Meidcal guy a while back there to prove it. But back to what Im talkin about.  We got an importent electsion comin up in a coupel months an I figger it aint too soon to start thinkin about it an who to vote for.  I usally only post to them five groups but I did some lookin for groups that could help maybe more with the electsion then them other five groups there.  I couldnt find no group on gore so I went with a Clinten group cause them two guacamoles are pretty tight an all. My old man was a democrat for as long as I could remember.  He was a regular workin stiff an after he got back from the ww2 there he worked at the Kodak place in rochester puttin together cameras for 25 years till he retired. He always said Tony the regular workin guys like me vote democrat cause the democrats take good care of the guys that work hard for a livin an dont let the companys give em a royal screwin or nothin. He always said the republicins didnt give a rats ass about nobody unless they was a banker or lawyer or a member of the country club.   So since I wasnt one of them rich jamokes but a guy who works hard for a livin an I figgered my old man was pretty smart Id always just vote for democrats an the hole electsion thing would be a peice of cake.  So thats how I been votin for a long time for democrats. But heres the problem.  It dont seem like them democrats take care of the workin guy like me no more like when dad was alive they take care of guys that dont do nothin for a livin an bowery bums an guys that sit on there keisters instead of workin an other stuff like that.  Its gettin so Im payin more an more taxes on my money an house an on the autobody shop I own. If it aint taxes its fees for disposin of old paint an all kinds of other liesenses I gotta have to stay open.  It seems like every year a little less a Tony Gs money is still Tony Gs an ol Uncle Sam keeps reachin a little deeper inta Tony Gs pockets like there aint no tomorrow. An then the guys in the shop that work for me was tellin me some stuff about Gore there.   They was laughin at him cause they told me Gore hired some woman to try an teach him how to be more manly.  I guess this woman was like a psichiatrist or somethin an she told him to stop bein a wimp an start bein an alfa man.  I dont know what alfa is but Jimmy in the shop told me it was like the top dog in the pack or somethin.  I didnt beleive what them guys in the shop was sayin but then they showed me in the paper an it was true. Now I dunno what kind of man needs a chippie to show em how to be a man. Nuthin against my mom but it wasnt mom that showed me how to be a man it was my pop that showed Tony G how to fight an how to level some punk when he trys to get cute. You know all the man stuff.  An my dad didnt have to show me all that much neither.  Puttin the bang shang a lang on bums an punks comes real natural to Tony G.  I didnt need a whole lotta teachin if you know what I mean.  Tony G knows that hes the top dog around these parts. So thats my first probelem with votin for Gore I dont know how he can lead our Boys there inta war if hes wimpy an scared.  An maybe all them forein bums will be able to push em around an get what they want outta america cause they read about the frail teachin him to be a man an they know hes a creampuff.  Already the canadiens an them orientals there is tryin to take all the drinkin water we got here in from lake Ontario there an nobodys doin nuthin about it. Then the other problem I got with Gore is all these taxes I been payin. I dont got no probelm with the guns.  I gotta lot of guns but I dont figure them democrats gonna be takin em.  The way I figger it its just a lot of talk to get votes. Look at the repulicans they always talkin about cuttin my taxes an they never do.  I figger the same for them democrats an the guns. Them guys that work for me in the shop is worried the democrats is gonna take their deer and turkey guns an they tell me not to vote for em cause of that.  I told em you gotta look at the big pictuer an alla the issues an make an edjucated vote in November. Anyways so I got some problems with teh democrats.   So you figure Id vote republicin but I gotta lot a problems with them.  I already said what my pop told me about them republicins an how they bums an crooks.  He was always talkin about Nickson an what a bum an a crook he was an tellin his republicin buddies See I told you them guys is crooks!!!!  Plus he was tellin me most of them republicins is Masons.  I dont know much of nothin about Masons but my dad said there a real bad thing an theres a lot of republicins in there an stay away from the Masons an if you want to join somethin Tony join the Moose or Elk lodge there. The only republicin I know much about is Patakey our govennore of NYS. An I dont like him much.  He said he was gonna cut this and cut that an that was 6 years ago.  He aint cut jack squat yet.  If anythin my NY taxes is higher then ever.  The only thing Patakey seems to cut is the money that goes to make the fishin and huntin better an instead teh fishin gets worse every year an it gets so it sucks more an more an he aint just talkin about takin guns hes got laws that are tryin to take my guns but thats not what I wanna talk about now.  To some up Patakey is just annother bum if you ask Tony G. An I dont know much about Bush but hes the president Bushs son there an that seems kinda weird to have a father an son both runnin the white house. I dont know how old Bush is but for all I know he wass playin Spase Invadars in the White house there while his old man was runnin the place an now hes gonna end up runnin the place??  Thats kind of wacko if you ask Tony G. So anyways who should I vote for this fall or should I vote for nobody instead?  If you ask me I dont like neither of them two jamokes but I gotta do somethin. — MEOW!!!!!!! Trip report – shad fishing

Question:

Good report deleted. Some general questions. When does the shad run start and how long does it last?

Around late March/early April through early May.   The peak varies from year to year.   Seems to be doing quite well this past week, though. How widespread are the runs?

If you mean when do the fish come up the river, it seems to be triggered by higher than average flows.   Early morning & late afternoon are reportedly better, but I don’t go enough to say yes or no.   I’ll add a bit of clarity in that the Susquehanna River holds more fish for longer than do these lower tributaries.   I just like Deer Creek because it’s so darned pretty and a lot easier fishing than on the big river (not to mention safer wading). Many years ago, when the shad were considerably more plentiful, one could arrive in the wee dawn hours and take up a position in quiet waters just below Conowingo Dam.   Once the rest of the world woke up and demanded electricity, they’d start the turbines in the hydro plant.   That was like an ON switch for the shad.   With the higher flows, they’d start biting imediately. Are they on spawning beds when you’re fishing for them or are they in the process of migrating upstream?

The ones I see and catch are migrating.   Quite honestly, I’m not familiar with their spawning habits.   I’ve never noticed a redd in the area I fish, but I’m relatively close to the mouth of the creek. Do the runs draw big crowds?

Crowd being a subjective term, I’d still say yes.   Some pools are known to be excellent spots, and to fish these, your space and mobility will be determined by other fishermen there.   Also, it is not FFO, and there are often a few spin fishermen crowding the FFers.   Having I said that, I’ll say that it is variable by time of day or day of the week.   It’s not necessary to fish the known spots though, the entire river usually holds fish at the peak of the run.   I’ve never had a problem finding a decent pool for myself. And since you didn’t ask: Yellow and red marabou streamers with gold or silver tinsel bodies are the fly of choice.   Use a sink tip line when the water is up.   Cast across and throw in a downstream mend.   They’ll hit on the swing. Joe F.

Response:

We have a HUGE run of shad in the Columbia R. throughout July, sometimes topping 100,000 per day.  These are fairly large fish, running about 3 to 7lbs, with the average about 4lbs.  Hard fighting fish, especially in the considerable current below Bonneville dam, which seems to be the best fishing area.  You can catch them on a fly, but most people use spinning gear, 8-12lb mono, and  small jigs (shad darts) with and ounce or more of pencil lead, since the best fishing is often 30 to 100 yards or more out (where the current is, beyond the eddies or slack water).  Also fisherman are often nearly touching shoulders, so flyfishing is well nigh impossible unless you fish well away from the crowds where the fishing is poor.  You also have to horse the fish in since there are so many lines in the water.  But with the fish so prolific, it can still be a blast. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We have a HUGE run of shad in the Columbia R. throughout July, sometimes topping 100,000 per day. Pat K

Sounds like the "old days" on the Susquehanna below the Conowingo Dam when the larger American shad were plentiful there.   It was certainly not the kind of fishing I enjoy now; but still, it was a great fun of a different sort. Joe F.

Good report deleted. Some general questions. When does the shad run start and how long does it last? How widespread are the runs? Are they on spawning beds when you’re fishing for them or are they in the process of migrating upstream? Do the runs draw big crowds? Willi

Response:

I’d hoped to get out over the weekend to give the shad run another shot, but the weather looked grim.   By Saturday evening, though, it had at least stopped raining steadily.   Around 5 p.m., SWMBO suggested I might get a couple hours in before dark.   In 10 min., I had the car packed and was on my way. I got to Deer Creek by 6, and as I parked my car, a few of the fishermen already at the Stafford Bridge pool were wading back to their cars.   The one guy I asked just said, "slow."   Still, I struggled into my waders, put my new Mike C. 4 wt. together, and dug in my bag for the reel.   Well, shit. I didn’t have the sink tip line I would certainly need with the water running as high as it was.   In a remarkable bout of foresight and redundancy, however, I had brought my 6 wt and its sink tip line.   Sorry, Mike; it’ll have to wait until next time.   I rigged the 6 wt. & waded out to a spot about 100 yds upstream of the other handful there. I was expecting slow, and the whole time I was gearing up, I didn’t see anybody else hooking up.   So I was pleasantly surprised when I nailed about a one-pounder on about my fifth cast.   Cool.   The barbless hook easily came free, and I went back to casting across the fast current.   Not long afterward, bam, another one.   Okay, that’s two in the first five minutes; how slow could it be?   In the end, not slow at all. After the tenth fish in less than an hour, I remembered a stale Montecruz in my vest pocket.   Most of the hits were coming at the end of the swing across the current, so after one cast, I tucked the rod under my arm and just let my line trail downstream while I lit the cigar.   About the time I got the stogie fired up, I had another fish on, and I set the hook with my armpit.  It was a little too easy; but I admit, I was having fun. As darkness approached, the average size of the fish increased, so I didn’t want to leave.   The last one, when I could barely see, was pushing two pounds.   In landing that one, I managed to tangle my line & tippet so badly there was no way I’d be able to undo it in the dark, so I was done for the night.   I’d caught well over 20 fish in about two hours. The 6 wt. was just a bit heavy for the size fish I was catching, and most of them could be pulled almost straight in.   A few bigger ones put up a pretty good fight, though, with a couple actually making the drag sing a few bars. I might get out again tonigh, & take my son & SWMBO.   Now where the hell is that other reel? Joe F.

(interesting history snipped) I’m indebted to you Larry. I didn’t know that Andre Puyans had a hand in the G&H. Credit where it’s due! I have at least a nodding acquaintance with John Goddard. He was very good about providing me with articles, at short notice sometimes, when I edited the quarterly magazine of the Fly Dressers’ Guild a few years back. He has probably forgotten more about angling than most of us will every know. Very dry sense of humour. Now, if only Andy can get full credit for his Loop Wing Dun and his line of AP Nymphs, among other flies he’s developed over the years…

I’ve been looking for the pattern for this fly for some time. Could somebody please post it for me? Thanks in advance, Darin

Response:

Not knockin’ your knowledge of the G&H Sedge Tony, but truth be known, it was ACTUALLY a threesome that developed this fly. The pattern was thought up as a collaboration by three tyers and fishermen, one who didn’t want any credit for his part in developing the fly, a guy named Andre Puyans.  Andy was sitting with John and Cliff one of the nights they were developing this fly and actually came up with the idea of the spun and clipped hair.  Story is by the time they had the "final product" tied, they were all in quite a drunken stupor and were quite pleased with their efforts, but didn’t really know what they came up with until the next morning when they were sober!! One of the features of the patten that has seemed to vanish into the dust is the spun fur dubbing strip of green hare (or originally seal) that was left hanging from the rear of the hook until the fly was completed, then pulled forward under the belly before tying in the antennae and hackling the fly. Another tip I shared with someone earlier today was to make the fly have a more "mottled" appearance like sedges naturally do, blend caribou and antelope along with deer to get the "blotchy" colors that are seen in a sedge’s wings.  The antennae are optional, but sure look nice on the finished fly….stripped coachman brown hackle quills are my favorite, but moose looks nice too.  Tie in the hackle quills just forward of the finished and trimmed body by the butts, leaving the tips on the hackles, then trim them after hackling the fly. Andy ties this patten at demos he does at some shows and tells the story, giving FULL CREDIT to both John Goddard and Cliff Henry when he does…and he says "It’s known now as the Goddard Caddis, but the TRUE name of the fly is the G&H Sedge" Larry #:)# Now, if only Andy can get full credit for his Loop Wing Dun and his line of AP Nymphs, among other flies he’s developed over the years…

Chris, you talk like someone who still view Americans as strange type with plaid pants, 3 cameras round their necks and all talking loudly but not saying anything. You clearly have never been to the US. I am a British ex-pat and I tell you they are *exactly* like Brits, insofar as Brits are exactly like everyone else in the world. Sorry to burst your bubble on that one. In fact in many ways, living here is so much better. I don’t need to lock my door at night, I leave my car unlocked with the windows down when I go fishing on a main road and the worst that has ever happened is that I had a wet set when I returned. British gun laws and British ‘freedom with responsibility’ didn’t stop the Northern Irish from slaughtering 3000 odd people. Can’t remember the last time Americans pulled two people from a car, stripped them naked whilst women onlookers jeered and eventually put two bullets their heads. Doesn’t jump out at me. The now-famous mass killings here in the US are no different from the Hungerford slaughter in the late 80s, or that recent one in Scotland. These examples come out without having to think. You should do some national self reflection before you post. Really. As far as this newsgroup goes, don’t read the ‘50%’ of posts that don’t interest you. Notice that only a small percentage of the people in the group start and nurture these threads. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who they are. A slight correction, assault rifles are not legal here. What you hear about are semi autos that are cosmetically simular judged by gun control advocates as assault weapons (a non entity). Pack Rods 3 vs 4 piece?

Question:

… A good caster can get a good presentation with any good rod.

I’ll second that thought!  At $10/hour that extra $200 could have been spent fishing for 3 days.  This has the side benefit that after three days of fishing they would probably be a better caster. MikeH

Response:

Anne,         I feel more of a difference (which is to say so little that I think it’ just because I know the rod is a multi-piece rather than a 2 piece)between 2piece rods than 3,4, or 6 piece rods.  Also, in my experience that a rod tube of about 36" in length or shorter, straps very easily to the side of my backpack and I only notice it when I sit down or bushwhack with the pack on. I never had a problem with a 2-piece rod strapped to the side of my backpack. And I trekked it all over the Sierras.  Of course that’s pretty easy hiking.

If you’ve a nice open trail, I would agree, but I’ve taken my 2-piece and 4-piece backpacking.  The 4-piece is about the same size as the pack, therefore if it doesn’t hit your pack, it doesn’t hit your rod.  The two piece tends to stick out like a flagpole.  Go under anything and you can be sure you’ll bang into it.  After nearly taking a tumble into the Gorge (I would have hit I-84 first :-) I won’t backpack with anything less than a 4-piece. Our customers in Sacramento, CA have been buying more 3, 4 and now 5 piece rods every year. The multi piece rods cast some much better today than they did 20 to 30 years ago. Nine foot, three piece rods are the hottest thing going in northern California. We have around a hundred different 3, 4 and 5 piece rods to choose from in our store. We do stock about 200 different two piece fly rods as they are still very popular. Bill Kiene Kiene’s Fly Shop Sacramento,CA,USA 800/4000FLY

I think what Bill wants to say that there is basically no difference in performance between good 2 piece vs 3/4/5 piece rods. They might feel slightly different but I think that’s mor because you know it than you really feel it. I see *NO* reason to but a 2 piece today, the convenience and safety when packing, driving, flying, hiking etc. is unbeatable. Thomas — Thomas Urbig

Having also done quite a bit of hiking in the Sierra with a flyrod I have found that a sturdy flyrod tube also makes a decent walking staff.  I’ve found that I would generally prefer to carry the rod in a tube by hand instead of of strapping to a pack.  There have been a couple of occasions where I’ve slipped on some shale or a slick section along a streambed and I’ve just tossed the rod somewhere "safe" as I was going down. Response:

There is a much wider choice of 4-piece than 3-piece. I have tried Loomis IMX 4-t. in 2- and 4-piece. Tremendous difference in feeling(4-piece feels much heavier) but casting length did not differ much. Then I tried Scott STS. It was practically impossible to distinguish between 2-piece and 4-piece. I do not think there is a general answer to your question. It depends on brand an model. You  m u s t  try before you buy! I use  two piece rods in a rod case stiff enough to double as a walking stick. I’ve never been in a situation where I needed to break a rod down into shorter pieces. . . Maybe if you’re hiking over the course of a week or so, and getting into desolate country where you just don’t want to be carrying a rod in hand. But I’ve always been fine with carrying a rod to go fishing. . . two pieces have a much nicer action than three or four. I suggest a mid priced rod –in the $90 – $100 range until you can explain to the salesperson what it is you need and why. For trout, a medium fast action, nine feet, in a five or six weight. A good basic rod –in two pieces. BTW I have an eight foot in 3 – 4 wt. a nine foot in 6 wt. for trout, and a nine in 8 wt. for steelhead. All good quality graphite, all about $100. And I’ve been doing this fly fishing stuff for about three decades now, love pulling the fish out of the holding area just thrashed by the guy with the $300 Sage without a single rise. A good caster can get a good presentation with any good rod. A good rod won’t help a poor caster make a good presentation.

That’s what I meant by easy hiking.  Open trails and scaling rock walls, no ducking under things.  But yeah, it is like a flagpole.  But a nice place to hang a sweaty bandana. -Burton — L. Burton Hawley           2330 NW Hummingbird Corvallis, OR

Having being bitten by the rod building bug this winter (3 down so far), I’ve decided to put together a pack rod.  What I’m wondering is whether for airplane luggage a 3 piece 9 footer (36 inch sections) is allowed in overhead, or whether I have to drop to a 4 piece (27 inch sections) to be able to carry it on.  I’d prefer a 3 piece because my blank of choice right now is a Scott Alpha (very nice for the money, at least for the 2 piece ones I’ve built with it!), but will do a four piece if I have to. Opinions? Troy

Most overheads will take up to 48" . So most three piece rods will fit.                  Harv

I have a 3 and a 4 pc. and both will fit in overheads. However the 4 pc. will fit inside most of my luggage, whereas the 3 pc. will not, and I don’t feel like buying new luggage. So when I fly I bring the 4 pc., while I stow the 3 pc. on the boat.                                                                 jc

need to wet hands when releasing fish

Question:

Gee…. I don’t know. It makes sense to touch the fish as little as

possible to avoid uneeded stress when releasing. However, I don’t know that a simple "bullshit" answer to a biologist is adequate. If the biologist has NOT seen mortality, then we should feel more comfortable when we "screw up". I don’t think this warrants such an unreasined response. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’d like to put to rest one of the biggest myths in flyfishing. Namely the need to wet your hands when releasing a fish.  The story goes that if you remove fish’s slime they get fungus or other infections.  Not true!  I run a fishing preserve & hatchery & never wet my hands.  We handle thousands of fish & in both the hatchery & preserve water.  During spawning operations we actually dry the brood fish using turkish towels to allow addition of live sperm from several males at a time (water activates the sperm).  Never see any mortality!   THIS IS BULLSHIT. The fool who posted this is talking raising hatchery fish in a artificial environment.   And how the hell does he know if there was mortality!   What does he do take a morning headcount.  Maybe a morning PE would help too!  Boy oh Boy. Wild trout are a bit different. PLEASE, wet your hands or better yet, do not touch them at all.   That mucus is there for a reason.  Wipe it off and the purpose is gone. I am no biologist, but it seems logical that all previous studies done on this, all say to wet your hands, and this bobo comes in and says……   Well you see. Tight lines, Russ

Fla Panhandle – QUESTIONS

Question:

Destination question for the group: I am planning (on very short notice) a family vacation to Destin/Panama City, Fla.  Should be arriving down there Saturday 6/24. I’ll be driving this time, so I’ll have my vehicle at my disposal. The trip will be heavily slanted towards keeping my wife (not a fisherman) and my three kids (8,6 & 4) happy, but I will have some time available for myself. I assume there’s inshore opportunity for speckled trout, redfish, maybe small tarpon and even snook. On previous trips I’ve been able to do a little evening/morning fishing scattered in here and there. I also usually get away with a half day or so of fishing. The 1/2 day will probably be spent fishing off a party boat or "six pack" type charter. As far as tackle goes, I have to admit I havent much experience with salt water fly fishing. There are no saltwater opportunities in Missouri ;) I’ve got a few BIG deceivers that I’ve used for yellowtail, baracuda and bonita off boats out of southern CA & baja Mexico. I also have an assortment of jigs & plugs for my spinning & casting tackle. Most of this is your typical heavy lead jigs and lipped diving plugs like "Cisco Kid". I’ve got a Sage 890RPL. I use an 8wt Bass Bug Taper line on it. The reel is a Lamson 3. There’s about 100 yds of backing. I’ll also be taking a 7 1/2′ spinning rod with 200+ yds of 17lb mono. I haven’t booked a room yet, but I’m sure we’ll be staying beachfront. So here come the questions:  1) Where to fish  2) What to fish with, epecially inshore in the surf or around     jetties/piers/bridges. I am no longer into chucking a hunk     of squid or shrimp out and seeing what happens. I don’t need     to use fly tackle exclusively, but that would be nice.  3) Any advice along the lines of how to spend the 1/2 day fishing     trip.
