A bum leg
Question:
Talk about bad luck… I was supposed to go on a trip with my flyfishing club next weekend, and I go and break my leg at work. Kinda screws up the fishing.
Better try and book a float trip. Broken bones are no excuse to stop fishing. Sorry to hear of your misfortune, hopefully it will not keep you from the water for too long. Warren (Who is no stranger to fishing with a cast)

I noticed they don’t do too good on the back cast. They seem to come out of the water and fly behind me well though, especially when they are tiny little things. <g — Warren Findley "The vice or virtue of any form of angling lies not in the method but in the man." Author Hugh Falkus

Question:
I’ve used a Discovery 17 regular stern with a motor mount as a fishing "boat" on rivers and small lakes. A canoe is a great way to get around by paddle. A motor just doesn’t work all that well, unless you’ve a a fairly wide boat with some kind of keel. But I’ve done it and would continue to do so, if I couldn’t get my hands on a boat. And then you’re not talking about a true canoe, anyway. I’d get a carolina skiff or a jonboat for what you want to do. You’ll be able to stand and move around much more easily. But if you’re wanting to cartop, then the Sportboat will work. Just remember that canoes are really for paddling in the 15 to 18 foot size. Best of all, get a river dory, mount a small motor, and you’re set for all kinds of fishing in small lakes and any kind of river. Great casting platforms. Great stability. Can tow with almost any car due to light weight. Mike
Response:
I realy enjoy my guide 147. I just got an outrigger for additional stability while fishing in lakes. they work very well and cost about $200, and clamp on, no perminate holes. One can stand in their canoe with the outrigger…

Having just visited the Old Town web site a couple of days ago, your post caught my eye right away. While I can’t give any personal advice directly, you should check out their site if you haven’t already been there. It’s exceptional, both with respect to lots of information and also, it’s easy to navigate. Their address is: http://www.otccanoe.com/ They do have a dealer locator option on their menu choices which may come in handy in case you don’t get the sought after responses to your post here. I own a Discovery 174 (pointy ends) that I like a lot. It’s quite stable, tracks well, and lightwei….. Okay, it’s stable & tracks well. Actually, it weighs in at a mere 84 pounds, & I can handle it myself, but it’s a beast to lift overhead. I fitted it with a removeable motor mount and a 35# thrust electric motor & it moves right along on lakes. I expect that a square transom would only make it better for that. I even did some mild whitewater with it once, but that was hell on the cosmetics – I wouldn’t recommend it. Slow rivers should be no problem. Joe F.

I can’t comment on that particular model, but I can tell you my (and my family’s) experience with Old Town has been wonderful, if about 100 years and at least 3 generations (including a still-used ‘glassed over canvasback) says anything. As to square sterns, don’t like them. What we have is a bracket that mounts on the gunwale, and it has handled up to around a 7.5 hp (a 5 or less will do fine, but the dink pusher was handy). That way, when paddles are in order, you still have a canoe, not a stretched skiff…<G. That said, if I were buying as a new user (or could only have one) today, I’d at least consider a Grumman (or similar) aluminium – light, manueverable, you can remove dents with a mallet, and best of all, weldable. Patching ‘glass-type material is a pain, and if you wrap such a boat, it is done. I also went to the site, and Crosslink 3 might be better than ‘glass type materials, but I still think aluminium is the best for a one-boat fleet…<G. HTH? R

It is very stable because it is wide, and quite heavy (118 lb). We also pole it on fast rivers, and it is a bit of a pig in comparison with narrower canoes, but it’s OK. It would be fine for paddling or running a trolling motor on slow rivers, ponds and small lakes (<250 acres). I’d go to a DS15 for this. It will give the stability without so much weight. JB

Question:
Fished the Cellar on 6/15 & 6/17 between 18:30 and 22:00 and they were taking spinners (looked like mayfly 14-18). I started with tan & rust caddis and after several refusals I switched to small elk hair cahills and got a small brown and a chubber. Noticed several carcasses on my line and began peering at the water it was loaded with spinners in and below the film. I changed to a lame kind of trico/frankenstien spinner that I tied with a clump of CDC and BANG ! a nice fat, very active brown destroyed it. Picked fish thereafter at an acceptable rate. As an aside, I went Salt water catching for stripers earlier in the day on 6/17 and my first hour of casts on the Hous were a PANIC ! I threw that fly out there so fast that fish in the Sand hole were put down ! No shortage of fish at any of the other places I stopped (One car, Two car). What great nights. Lets go Alders !!! — "The true Angler is content to fish alone" Brian Di Carlo
Response:
Well, it was not a bad weekend at the Housie. Got there on Thursday and stayed until Monday. Here is a brief synopsis of events. Water temps were excellent. Morning temps were about 64 and evening temps were about 70-72. Dam is doing pond & release (up by 1 pm and going down at about 5-6pm. Have no idea how lack of water will affect this. There was no rain the previous week but it poured Friday Night. Everything was hatching for this time of the year (cahill, isonychia (sp?), sulfur, caddis, etc.), EXCEPT the Alder. As of Monday morning at Push ‘Em Up, no Alders in sight, although I did get Phil’s (Orvis Fly Shop) guarantee that it was going to hatch that Sunday night! Oh well. Morning fishing was from lousy to non-existent. Fished Push ‘Em Up, Cellar Hole, Long Pool, & Campground to little or no avail. HFFA members left over from the previous camping weekend said that morning fishing had been difficult all week. Evening fishing, on the other hand, was very good. Cahill hatches by the truck load just before dark. All holes seemed to be good, especially in front of the campground (like my last report). The fish started after emergers at about 7-7:30 and were fully rising by dark. Sunday night they were hitting extremely strange at Carse. Only caught one out of over a dozen hits and about 5 drops! The only reason I caught him was that he rolled over the fly and I fouled him behind the pectoral! That’s it for now. Don’t know about my next trip. I am trying to get my Dad back down to the Beaverkill again, but I don’t know. Cannot plan for the Housatonic Quill (White Fly) hatch in August as the "80 degree" river shut down rule may be in effect! They have already changed the restricted dates on the tributaries. That went into effect on 15 June. – Mike (Please remove the "NOSPAM." from my address and domain before responding) P.S. – Asking a favor! For anyone who camps at the Housie, conditions are MISERABLE. Things are not getting repaired (backed up toilet, sink, shut off water pump, grass not cut, felled trees not cut up, etc.) If you have time, PLEASE write a letter to the DEP and complain. I have been going to this place for 25 years, and I am getting really disgusted. If anyone feels the same way, please write. Thanx.

Question:
How far are you traveling to fish thses rivers? Don’t expect springs or sockeye anymore though you can get springs in the Vedder. The Vedder has 10’s of thousands of fish this time of year; and just as many anglers. Don’t bother unless you go on a week day. Don’t bother if a typical BC monsoon session is on as it blows out to thick clay banks fairly quickly. For coho use small streamers; a local pattern called the Rolled Muddler is the current fav. Also the Coho blue (tinsel body, green calf or BT with dark blue over) go small sizes 8 to 10 3xl for the most part. Egg patterns and egg sucking leeches work for fish that have been in the river a while. Chum take anything hot orange or pink dead drifted across their noses. The Harrison is beautiful. You should have a boat but it can be fished from shore. Springs are stickly closed as the run is in serious decline. Lots of room on this river. Has excellent cutthroat fishing but hasn’t been fishing well due to high water (wet fall) needs dry spell to hold fish. Nearby Chehalis River is where Harrison fish are bound. Don’t bother with the Stave very short river headed by a dam. Some sporadic trout and coho. Loads of spawning chum; leave them alone.

Vedder – very crowded. Take your own rock and don’t expect to fly fish, shoulder to shoulder bait fishing. Can be busier on a weekday. Harrison – fished it 2 weeks ago, caught 0, but saw some coho. Stave – no report. The salmon are just starting to show. Next few weeks will improve. B.

Trout near San Francisco?
Question:
I am planning a short trip to the Bay Area in mid-march. Can anyone suggest good trout waters within a couple hours of San Francisco?
Response:
Because the general trout season doesn’t open until May 1st, trout waters are hard to come by near San Francisco in mid-March. However, there is one trout stream that remains open, about a one and a half hour drive. It’s called Putah Creek. It’s a tailwater, flowing out of a man-made reservoir, called Lake Berryessa. It’s a bit north of a town called Vacaville, east of San Francisco off Highway 80, on the way to Sacramento. Easy to find on a map. Make local inquiries as to how to get to the section below the dam. If you want to get into some big trout, (and I’m talking 6-8 lbs.) drive north on Highway 5 for about 3 1/2 hours. Between the towns of Anderson and Red Bluff, on the Sacramento River, a guide can be had to float you through that water. This is a blue ribbon fishery, and open at this time of year. Make inquiries for guides, etc. through the "Redding Fly Shop." Their phone number is (916) 222-3555. Those guys really know the water in that area, and can put you into good fishing, and will arrange good guides for you. Tight Lines! Old Deep

writes: If you want to get into some big trout, (and I’m talking 6-8 lbs.) drive north on Highway 5 for about 3 1/2 hours. Be sure to call ahead to check on flows. You can wade the Lower Sac in the town of Redding and down to Anerson when the flows are 4000cfs or lower. 5000cfs gets a little tough to wade and above 8000cfs you can use a boat, but probably won’t find many fish. Currently the Lower Sac flows are 35,000 cfs. We had some warm weather which filled Shasta lake up too much from run-off so they are dumping it like crazy now. If the flows are good in March, there are usually great caddis hatches and both good nymphing and dry fly fishing. About 2 hrs out of SF you can fish the Mokulemne River below Comanche Dam or the lower part of the Stanislaus River. Both can be good in March. Also may be decent Striper fishing in the Delta then. If you kill the big ones there will only be little ones left (funny how that works!).

Mammoth Area – reports?
Question:
I am planning to go to Mammoth in a few weeks. Has anyone fished the San Joaquin recently? How about Upper Owens, Lake Crowley, Hot Creek, Twin Lakes, etc. Any info. on fishing conditions, water levels, etc. would be greatly appreciated. / John Woodling / Sacramento, CA / "The lure of fishing is that it is the pursuit of that which is elusive, yet attainable……an endless series of occasions for hope"
Response:
Got mixed reports from people who fished at Mammoth a week ago. Some said they were skunked (fly fishermen) and some (bait fisherman?) said they caught good sized fish in Lake George or Mary. We were south of Bishop at 9000-9800′ lakes (Shadow, Ediza) and my fly fishing hubbie didn’t catch anything. Some of the lakes were frozen and thawing fast. Mosquitos were awful (probably still are). Your best bet is to check with Mammoth (1) fly fishing shops and (2) fly fishing groups (FFF) when you get into Mammoth. Info on them and lots of other good stuff is in the freebie publications available at local Chamber of Commerce and Ranger’s station. : I am planning to go to Mammoth in a few weeks.
