Boy Scouts FF Merit Badge

Question:

I noticed that the Boy Scouts have started a FF Merit Badge, and I see an opportunity for our TU Chapter to do a little community outreach. Before I start asking local BSA people about how we can help, I was hoping that maybe some ROFFers involved with the Boy Scouts can offer suggestions.   I was thinking about maybe a group outing.  Maybe there’s a Boy Scout Camp with some good water on it, or something. Scott

It’s a good thing my new Cabela’s clearance moleskin shirt sheds nasally- ejected coffee like water off a duck’s ass, or I would be really pissed right now :)   Scott

Response:

A group outing makes the most sense.  Contact your local Scout office and volunteer.  Definitely, if there’s a Scout camp nearby that would be an ideal opportunity because they are heavy on merit badges during camp.  On the off chance that they already offer the program at camp, remember that not all the boys can make it to camp, so it would be an excellent gesture to offer a separate program. You can get some good info here: http://www.bsaflyfishing.com/

Thanks, Stan.  I’ll let you know what we come up with. Scott

Response:

I served my term as assistant scoutmaster and have helped do this before there was a flyfishing badge.  It was just a fishing badge at the time and three of us did it for the scouts in our sons troop and one other. Call the local counsel (there on the web) and get a list of the troops near you.  They will have the names and phone numbers of the troop Scoutmasters.  Call the troop leaders and tell them what you are willing to do.  They will be all over you.  They are always looking for and welcome help. The scouts have booklets that detail the steps for earning every merit badge.  The emphasis is to have the scouts do all the work; your role is to be teacher and advisor. You can run the program for the whole troop or for just a couple of boys, depends on how many are interested. It’s the boys who decide if they want to get the badge. If your names on the list as an advisor some boys will seek you out. Some of the things we did were:  1.) Gave hands on demos on fly tying at one of their regular meetings.  We started using a parachute cord and an 8/0 hook and then let them go with the six vices and various materials we brought. They all managed to tie a couple of flies.  2.) Depending on where they meet you can bring in some rods and give casting instructions. 3.) You can let them come to your house and work at your bench and tie a few flies. .  You have to have at least two boys there at a time, no one on one instruction is allowe.  Let them see you stuff, explain how it works and maybe cast some in your back yard.  This is the point where some of them become lifetime flyfishers.  4.) You take them on an outing.  This part may educate you as much as them.  Pick a spot that safe and has catchable fish.  I wouldn’t count on a lake at a Boy Scout Camp having any cacheable fish. This is where you will need more help.  Get more volunteers for the trip one on one instruction is a big help here.    Twenty wild kids on a river with fly rods, wading, throwing rocks, and just being boys. It’s a great experience.  I cannot recommend it enough. .     – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I noticed that the Boy Scouts have started a FF Merit Badge, and I see an opportunity for our TU Chapter to do a little community outreach. Apparently it will cost $15,000 to print up all the booklets and the scouts are currently seeking donations to defray that cost. Mu

There’s one on the White river in central WI.  Great hex hatch too.  Don’t know about a dozen or so scouts flailing the water in the dark though. :) Wolfgang

A noble quest, but I don’t think I’d wanna be the responsible party that hands them a fish hook or anything else that could potentially put me on the defendent end of a PI suit when somebody sticks a hook in his eye.   Maybe a dozen pairs of cheap safety glasses would be a good investment. Call me paranoid, Joe F.

Both TU and the Scouts have mechanisms to deal with insurance issues.   Safetly glasses should be mandatory.  I won’t cast without them.  I also walk around with a whistle in my vest, but I’m paranoid. Scott

Wiscoy Creek runs right through Camp Sam Wood right near Pike, NY.

It’s been my limited experience that should anything unfortunate happen, TU, BSA, the rodmaker, the hook manufacturer, and you personally will get named in a suit.   Sure, you’d probably get out of any liability, but it’ll still cost a few shiny nickles in legal fees.   Lawsuits are a bitch for the innocent.   Didn’t mean to get so serious about it, but being married to a (former) property/casualty insurance agent will do that to you.  :-) Joe F.

Thanks.  There’s also a pretty nice campground right on the Eastkoy that might be suitable.  Not many tent spots, though.  Seems taken up by permanent RVs Scott

well, I don’t know about good water compared to other areas, but in NJ there’s the Big Flat Brook that goes through Stokes State Forest which has an adjacent Boy Scout Camp. The BFB is known for decent trout FFing. Rob

in the uk there’s quite a common gesture that people do (often leaning out of a car window) as an alternative to giving the finger. you form a circle with your thumb and index finger and then shake it up and down, usually while shouting, "WAAANKAAHHH!!!". i wonder, if it’s a woman in a car who cuts you up, whether you should just shake your hand in a rubbing motion instead? :) pete – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was watching, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY last night and I heard a lot of different slang for male masterbation.  But I couldn’t think of any for female masterbation.  Anyone know any?  I guess it doesn’t come up in conversation that often…

I just got back from two weeks in Northwest Ireland. Salmon and Sea Trout are in trouble there, as they are in most places.  Everybody was up in arms about it, and everybody had a different idea. The peat  cutting, which causes terrible erosion, looked like the main culprit to me.

Doubt if you’ll find too many people agreeing with you. (‘cept for the netters and fish-farmers of course)  :-)) Sea-trout and salmon stocks were fine in the past when peat cutting was just as extensive. It makes the water look bad, but the fish don’t seem to mind too much. Most interesting thing is to see how well stocks recover in any particular river system as soon as estuary or sea-loch salmon farming is stopped for a while. Its almost instantaneous. Too much netting at sea, and overfishing for the Krill/shrimps/sand-eels the fish live on is the popular choice for the overall drop in numbers. If you you want to fish Eire/UK for salmon or sea-trout, come soon  - and don’t be too hopeful. You still seem to have some fine fishing in USA. I know you’ve had your problems, but I wish we’d looked after ours half as well. Seems to me the pressures seem to be increasing all over tho’. Sometimes the only way to take my mind off it is to go fishing. Tight lines Ian D

Response:

It is time for Ireland to solve their problems.  Let it go.

Unfortunately, the Irish are not just damaging their own fisheries – they are also netting huge numbers of salmon passing the west coast of Ireland on their way back from the North Atlantic to Wales, Southern England, France, Spain.  They take far more Welsh fish, for example, than are caught in Wales by both rods and nets..  Political pressure has so far achieved little.  And it is said that this netting, much of which is illegal, is a big source of funds for the IRA..  :-( — Phil Jones South Wales

Response:

Salmon and Sea Trout are in trouble there, as they are in most places.  Everybody was up in arms about it, and everybody had a different idea.  Signs along many streams pleaded "Save our Sea Trout."

That’s the name of a very worthwhile organisation which has been campaigning for several years against the inshore salmon farming which has wrecked the sea trout runs.  The damage is done by massive infestations of sea lice.  The evidence is overwhelming. Send SOS a contribution and ask for some of their newsletters.  SOS, PO Box 69, Galway, EIRE. Over fishing (in the ocean),  infestations of parasites exacerbated by sea-farming in the estuaries, global warming  and siltation from sheep overgrazing and peat cutting all were mentioned as possible culprits. The peat  cutting, which causes terrible erosion, looked like the main culprit to me.  There is a lot of water in Ireland, and a lot of bedrock too. Good spawning gravel is hard to find, and what little there is looked brown, silted and peaty to me….at least where I fished, in the Connemarra district.

You forgot agricultural pollution of the spawning streams and lakes, commercial gravel extraction from river beds, over-fishing (in the rivers and lakes), etc.. :-( — Phil Jones

DIBBLING:      I learned a new fishing technique on one of the big Loughs: dibbling.  Local fly fishermen apparently dibble in rivers too, for both salmon and sea trout.   I’m looking forward to trying it back here, in Montana.  What is it? Put a relatively heavy wet fly on the end of the leader.  Then, maybe two feet back up the leader, put a bushy dry fly on a 6" dropper.  Cast across stream and pick up the rod tip until the dry fly is out of the water. Then bob the rod tip to make the dryfly look like a dancing caddis fly. On Lough Corrib, brown trout to 10 lbs smack’em like candy. Anybody ever try dibbliing over hear? Last note:       They have beautiful jungle cock necks for less than $75.00 in Dublin. I almost bought one.  But I managed to resist. Too bad nobody raises jungle cock.  I’d buy it for sure, if they weren’t dissapearing……like the sea trout? — /* Sandy Pittendrigh                  –oO0  * http://www.nervana.montana.edu/~sandy  * http://www.avicom.net/sandy                   */

Hey Dave — that’s a pretty desolate area.  Don’t know about hiking there, but for fishing, try Dry Falls Lake.  It is the epicenter of the massive flooding that we had in the area in the last couple of million years.  It is a geologic mecca.  This lake is very well protected and is not stocked — no motors at all, barbless hooks, and a one fish limit.  It is prime for canoes/kayaks/float tubes.  I’ve taken some large trout there. Do not take an inflatible raft or inflatible kayak there — the winds can get you big time.  I have an entire gut wrenching/leach infested arms/ lost gear story about that.

Dave, I spent 5 years at CWU in E-burg and enjoyed the solitude provided on the Tanum (ridge) and especially behind the airport on the Monashtash.  For fishing (and duck hunting)  I used to go across the Vantage bridge toward George and attend to the "potholes".  The Yakima river was always a great resource and fishing was often good (back in the 60’s and 70’s).   All in all, Ellensburg is a great jumping off point.  I have only good memories of the place.  Perhaps someone can provide trail info for you but I just bushwacked in the low brush forest.  Careful though if you do that.  It’s easy to get lost in this country. Bill BTW, the road up to Monashtash used to go through toward Wenachee but even in the 60’s it was a poor wagon road.  It may be one fantastic trail by now.  You should smell the aroma on a warm spring day!

Try the Greewater River off Hwy 410.  The end of the road trailhead offers a well-marked trail paralleling a 20′ – 30′ wide river ideal for fly-fishing.   Jeffrey Olson

Hi Dave, Please tell us your definition of "Central Washington".  Do you mean the goegraphic center of the state east of Wenatchee, or do you include the Central Cascades?  If you include the Central Cascades, I suggest you pick up a copy of "100 Hikes in the Alpine Lakes".  It is published by the Mountaineers and contains info on many great dayhikes and backpack trips in the area (the Cascades Mountains between I-90 and Hwy. 2). Also, if your range extends a little farther north, there is another volume, "100 Hikes in the Glacier Peak Region". Kerry

Short Fat Cigar Smokin Flyfishers Club

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Everyone: I am going to revive the olde SFFC Short Fat Flyfishers Club that Dennis Bitten came up with but is now disbanded. The new name that 14 of us has chosen is "Short Fat Cigar Smokin Flyfishers Club." The rules are going to change a bit as I and others feel that a club of this type can make an impact on the market and we would truly like to make it a viable club. The market is for extended sized sport clothes, waders, gloves and various other equipment (Ever try to get a size 50" waist from Orvis in anything). Keep your Loops Tight, Flys Dry and for Pete’s sake keep your wader fly closed! Mike

Hi Mike, I’m glad to see you get this club going again. You wouldn’t consider a tall, skinny old duffers who falls in the water a lot as a candidate for membership? Just kidding, Good luck. — Tight Lines Al Beatty BT’s Fly Fishing Products Bozeman, MT (97 materials catalog) http://www.flyshop.com/Expo/Specialty/BTsPdcts/index.html

Response:

Do the adjectives "short" and "fat" modify "cigar," or "flyfishers"? vince norris

Response:

Al, Until your post, I was wondering what was supposed to be "short and fat" — the cigar or the flyfisher. DaveB

Response:

Missed the beginning of this thread. Where do I go to sign up? Bob

Response:

Hi: Well it could be both or either I guess. The intent is for us anglers that are short and fat in stature to gain recognition in the fly fishing market. The Cigar Smoking is just an added pleasure for those of us who partake in it. MMT

Your club is greta, though I’ll skip the cigars.  It is frustrating to try to find waders for someone 5′6" and 240 lbs.  However, you might considerthe fact that we are the final result of millions of years of evolution and that so-called "thin"people are merely, unlike us, "famine resistance challenged"!  Bill

Response:

Not trying to be a smart a**, but try finding waders for 6′-6" 170# size 10 foot.  Most mfgs think that if you are 6-6, you should be 320 or so! One of these days I’ll find something in my size Steve Stillabower Indianapolis, IN

Fly-fishing Maine

Question:

What are some Spring recomendations for fishing Maine, Either Salmon or trout?

Response:

Spring fishing in Maine means the smelt run for landlocks.  West Branch of the Penobscot near Ripogenus dam in early June is my #1 pick.  Hatches should also start by June 10. Rangely area has some terrific fishing in the Kennebago river, Big Magalloway river, and Rapid river.  Should start by mid-May. Tight lines, Gerry Crow

Day, lots of caddis hatches.  I usually fish only dries on the Rapid, but lately have had lots of luck with nymphs (Hendrickson, Hares Ear, my own concoctions of green caddis worms (both dubbed and latex bodied), and Brassies).  The Rapid is my favorite spot in all the world.  It doesn’t get much better.  Be sure to see "Lakewood Camps" representatives at the Marlboro Mass Fly Show Jan 17-19.   Dave LaCourse

What are some Spring recomendations for fishing Maine, Either Salmon or trout?

I was in Maine one summer six or seven years ago and my wife hired a guide for me to fish one day as a birthday gift.  At the time, that was a very extravagant gift on her part.  We had little money and I had never fished with a guide.  It was mid summer and I spent one day with the owner operator of Libby Camp (they advertise in the magazines).  That was truely one of my most memorable fishing trips of my life.  Since then our financial situation has changed and I’ve fished with a lot of guides, but, that guy was truely tops.  The fishing wasn’t terific because of the time of year but, he gave me a great trip.  We fished rivers and we fished lakes.  He taught me casting tips.  He told stories about Maine and the "old" days and we moaned about politicians.  What more could you ask for.  I would recommend Libby Camps to anyone who asks.   Steve Russell My Rod and Reel They comfort me.

Are you from the New England area?  If so, visit the Fly Fishing Show this week (Jan 17,18,19) in Marlboro, Mass. There you will find a booth for "Lakewood Camps", Middle Dam, Maine. Great place to stay, and some of the best flyfishing for landlocks and brook trout on the Rapid River (output of Lower Lake Richardson). If you are there for the Hendrickson hatch, you will never forget the experience.  Before Memorial Day fishing is usually with streamer, but nymphs will bag many also.  After the first Hendrickson hatch, the Caddis hatches come off — usually early June.  Great fishing, and great accomodations from Sue and Stan Milton. Regards, Dave LaCourse

Stainless Steel – How to tell?

Question:

I pulled open a drawer where I keep all kinds of eyes for tying fishing flies.  As I was getting set to tie some bonefish flies, I realized that a lot of my bead chain had come out of any pouch that it had been in.  Some of the bead chain is old standard stuff, some is Stainless, which I’d like to use on my bonefish flies.   Anyone know of an easy way to tell which is the stainless eyes? (besides letting it sit in salt water for a few days/weeks) Weird question, but I would hope some metallurgist fly-fisherman might know the easy answer! TIA… Steve

Hi Steve Using a magnet is a good starting point in that (in my experience) even the highest-quality stainless steel exhibits some magnetic properties. I have three kinds of bead chain; chrome plated mild steel, shiny stainless steel and chrome plated brass.  A magnet should enable you to tell these three apart, in that brass won’t be even faintly magnetic. Hope that helps  Russ

Response:

I believe that a magnet will not attract stainless steel. Dave

Response:

In general the stainless will not be "ferromagnetic" and will, therefore, not be attracted to a magnet, unlike the steel bead, which will.  Although this is not always the case I would take about any odds that it will work, as ferritic stainless is rare….make that very rare. dave

So, one has to be careful.  Now, what you do have going for you is that austenitic stainless steel is the most corrosion resistant and thus might be the best choice for saltwater use.  However, martensitic is the type that can be the strongest.  As far as the other type of stainless, ferritic, I am not sure, but I think that also might attract a magnet.  As I said, one has to be careful. Good luck. Kind regards, Steve Kernosky Michigan Tech Univ.

Response:

Stainless steel is generally not attracted to a magnet nearly as strongly as regular steel because of the increased content of other metals, i.e. nickel and others.  If you have a small magnet, you might try this until a *real* metal expert replies.  longspeer

Response:

The technical stuff all sounds great – if you are trying to tell between Stainless and Mild Steel, the simple way is to make sure the item is clean (and not sharp) and taste it – stainless does not taste of anything, mild steel has a , well, metallic sort of taste. Dont hook yourself. hope it helps.

No, some types of stainless steel (typically the 400 series, I believe) are at least slightly ferromagnetic, so a magnet is not an accurate way to determine whether or not the metal is stainless steel. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any easy, reliable way to distinguish stainless steel.  Usually one can tell by appearance:  stainless steel has a relatively dull, gray sheen compared to plated materials (eg. chrome or cadmium over steel), but brighter than aluminum or pot metal alloys.  It helps to have a practiced eye – as well as some examples of true stainless steel.  Surface texture is also a good clue:  with stainless, the machine tool marks may still be evident, whereas plating will typically smooth or fill these in.   -Wes Wes Neuenschwander Seattle, WA
