Deerfield River Newbie Question
Question:
Hi everyone, just thought I’d introduce myself. I’ve been lurking for a while and this group seems to be a pretty good bunch of guys (and gals). I’ve learned quite a bit. I’m a newbie fly fisherman (only been out once in horrible windy conditions). I’ll be fishing the Upper Deerfield this weekend. Does anyone familiar with the river have any suggestions regarding fly selection this time of year, useful tips, etc. that might enable a poor newbie to catch a few trout? I’m aware of the dam, water levels, etc. I was thinking of getting a guide for a day, but it’s kind of expensive. TYIA for the help, and I hope to contribute to the group in the future. Tom Zebrowski
Greetings, Tom. I’ve not fished the area, but there’s a pretty decent map and hatch information at this website: http://tinyurl.com/20mq According to this information, it looks like you should be fishing midge imitations #20 or smaller. I’ve had a bit of success lately in Southern Mass. with small, white spinner patterns and Griffiths Gnat for dry flies, and #16 and smaller nymphs. — TL, Tim
Response:
Hi George, thanks for the welcome. I’ll be fishing the two catch and release areas below the Fife Brook Dam. I should have been more specific. Are you familiar with that area? Regards, Tom
Response:
Welcome to the group, Tom. If , by Upper Deerfield, you mean the Vermont section below Searsburg Dam, I have never fished it, so I can’t be of much help. I only know a few people who have fished that area, and they regarded it as overrated. Good luck, anyway, and please submit a TR. Response:
Could anyone name me some fine Grayling/trout rivers in the area of Sheffield England?
Very few, very much in demand, and apt to be expensive I’m afraid. The three main rivers are in Derbyshire, roughly 20 miles south-west of Sheffield. Best of these is the Wye, and tickets available for a short stretch of the Chatsworth Estate water – Tel Keeper 01246-582513 or Estate Office 01246-582242. I believe this is dry-fly only. A further six miles available centred round the town of Bakewell – Tel 01629-733518 or (keeper) 01629-636255. The other rivers are the Derwent and Dove (Isaac Waltons home river), but I haven’t any info on tickets to hand. I’ll try and dig some out if you’re interested. If you want more than these, then I can’t think of much any nearer than the welsh Dee, which is about 60 miles away, or the rivers of North Yorkshire or Lancashire, which are very good, but a lot further away. I guess that explains why good fishing around Sheffield is not cheap. Cheers Ian D

I’m new to fly fishing, but got hooked (no pun intended) last summer. I couldn’t get any bites on bait so pulled out my mismatched fly rod (I bought it years ago at a Kmart closeout sale.) and instantly started getting bites. Apparently the little red misquito and Dave’s Hopper were the right choices. I caught a 4lb Rainbow and hooked several more but couldn’t land them. This was on the San Juan River near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Anyway, the point is I want to invest a little (maybe $75?) in a decent fly rod. I almost always stream fish for trout and usually not but about 8-11 inches. What should I get and where do I get it? I’d like a matched kit because I don’t know much about fly-fishing. Thanks for the help.

The advice to get Cabela’s catalog to buy an inexpensive outfit is good. They have a wider selection than anybody in the lower price points. From what you say, look for an outfit that is 4 or 5 wt., and 8′6" to 9′ long. For a "balanced outfit", you’ll need a reel and fly line to match. If you’re used to K-Mart prices on spinning tackle, you’re in for a bit of sticker-shock. Is the $75 for a rod only, or a rod/reel/line combination? If the latter you’re really pushing the bottom limits of the market, and are likely to replace it fairly soon if you get serious about the sport. You may wish to hold on to your existing K-Mart special, and save up about $200 for an outfit that will give you a real performance improvement over what you’ve got now. Michael

No doubt you’ve already read the advice on Cabelas, They are right. Give a good look at the 3 forks 3wt. 7.5′ 3piece rod combo. It casts easily to 30′ and beyond if you power it. It’ll be really fun on the size you specified yet has enough backbone for those 4+ pounders if finessed (I’ve done it) but it is more closely related to work than relaxation at that size.Comes complete but I would add a loop (orvis makes the best), the reel is on the large size for the rod but light and usable. It comes kit form so you can learn to attach the leader to line and reel(if you goof just cut it and try again), the line is not of the greatest quality but it’ll get you on the water AND the price is right. My advice would be to invest a little more money, dump the ideas about buying a kit, and get a nice Pro Graphite St Croix rod and put a few extra bucks into the line. This is the setup I started flyfishing with 6 years ago now. I wanted to buy a cheap kit, and see if "I liked it", but a wise person told me to put in a little more money. You’ve already tried flyfishing with the cheap stuff. You will very probably develop into a fanatic. I own many flyrods now, but that old St. Croix 5 wt is still a rod I love and use frequently. Rick, : You have a gold medal stream running right through the heart of Vail, : Gore Creek. Twenty inch rainbows on attractors. The best in town : fishing in Colorado. I find this to be a remarkable statement, that 20 inch bows can be caught in town. If it is true, that is the ultimate "tame" fish.
I can readily believe that you could read something like this in a brochure published by the Vail Chamber of Commerce, but don’t bet your firstborn on it. Nor should you put much stock in the "Two Trout Over 16 Inches" signs; if you read the shocking reports you will quickly realize that they’re really just a statistically and politically correct way to say "Catch and Release". However, in a stream not far away … Tom

This is not only true, but it is the trend in urban stream reclamation. The Roaring Fork through Aspen is the same way. "Parkish", I would call it. You should see the holding pools and trout observation structure (it is cool, like a sea world underground view into a large hole below a rapid) in Boulder, Co. Many, may big fish. Lots are the DOW brooders sent to pasture. The planners in Glenwood have planned and started construction on a bike path along the Fork through town. They rollerblade in bikinis along the colorado through the Glenwood Canyon, and you need to be careful where you hurl the Grizzly King. Again, ‘parkish’. I particularly like bashing stockers for the smoker in front of the tourists at the rest areas along I-70. The best section of the Blue (trust me) *IS* in the Heart of Silverthorne, problem here is property access. Same in Breckenridge, Ouray etc. etc. This "Trout in Town" thing is not only real, it is the norm around here in Colorado. In fact Mr. Fletcher, I’ll show you a spot in Colorado where you can catch a 24 incher behind a major busy grocery store. TimW

: You have a gold medal stream running right through the heart of Vail, : Gore Creek. Twenty inch rainbows on attractors. The best in town : fishing in Colorado. Js, I think that would be Beaver Creek in Beaver Creek (just outside of Vail) I hear that’s some good small stream fishing but, haven’t tried it yet. Probably some mosquito’s, elk hair caddis, small humpy’s, ect… would work just fine. Best of luck….Cliff

Why not fish Gore Creek, which possesses Gold-Medal waters right through the city of Vail? Eagle and Colorado Rivers are close-by and are always nice rivers… — MORGAN P. Question:
: Does anyone know who makes Cabella Fish Eagle fly rods I was watching a video by Stu Apte on Saltwater Fly fishing and he mentioned in passing that Cabella’s rods were built by G Loomis. Any Confirmations? Rodney Singapore
Response:
This reel was almost certainly made by the Sth company in Argentina. It was identical in design and even carried the same symbols but a different label. Cannot speak for the new reels included in packages except to say that the new cassette fly reel looks surprisingly like the Sth cassette reels (just a guess).
Yes, this would make sense because STH makes Loomis reels and the head STH engineer Roberto Sacconi is a friend of Gary Loomis. Loomis claims to be a real believer in the STH system. J.Vogel) says: Does anyone know who makes Cabella Fish Eagle fly rods I think the conclusions reached on the net include the following: Cabela uses rod blanks from G. Loomis to manufacture its fly rods. We never decided who actually makes the rods but seemed to agree that they are of good quality and reasonable for the $$. My own experience supports this claim. The outfit that I have included the Fish Eagle II rod and an MCD reel. This reel was almost certainly made by the Sth company in Argentina. I believe you also asked a question about who makes the Cabelas reel (in another post)…this reply may answer that. If you are asking about spinning reels, we have discussed this and never reached an answer. Hope this helps. Scott Maitland
