Bitterroot Mountains
Question:
traffic is awful (they closed down the interstate because of loose cows), it is really hard to breathe (because of smog), and it would take me half a day to get to any reasonable trout water. Have a great day!!!
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hamilton, Montana: 15 Oct 02 (Trip Report Begins) We are camped on the Bitterroot River at The Angler’s Roost. The weather is gorgeous, the Montana sky blue. Fly fishing now finds one standing in a river tunnel of golden laced Aspen and Maple trees. The fires of fused fall colors dazzles in the sun as large, fall caddis’, dance on wiffs of warm air currents. A light breeze brushes against your face with all the sweet fregrances of fall smells, and warming pines. . . gives pause. One cannot but help smile as the blue tuxedoed king fisher flips along in staggered flight to the other side of the river with a wiggling minnow in its mouth. The oozel also fishes along with you not that far away, and off to the left, a cutthroat trout sups upon midges. It’s going to be a good day. Suzanna You might want to check out Jimmy Jacobs. He has published a couple books on streams in the southeast. The fishing here doesn’t compare to that in the west but there are some streams within a couple hours drive from the metro Atlanta area.

Right here. <g I live in the Atlanta area and fish mostly Noontootla Creek these days, which isn’t that far – about an hour and a half for me, and doesn’t get blown out easily by rain. There is some nice water around Robbinsville NC (Snowbird and Santeetlah), where some of the NC contingent is gathering next week which is around a 3 hour drive, as is Tellico if you like bigger fish and more crowded fishing. Have you ever checked out the site: http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ngto/ ? It has a lot of good information about streams in north Georgia. — Charlie…

SPLORK! The musk thang is an obnoxious jerk who gets his kicks out of baiting anyone who might disagree with him with his outrageous headers. He is totally opposed to any requests to limit or curtail his off topic behavoir. He regularly morphs his nick to get around the filters of those who attempt to ignore him, and he hides behind free posting services and conceals his email because his behavior violates most ISP’s terms. He has lost a couple of accounts in the past due to the volume of complaints regarding his behavior. I could care less if he’s a hunter, a fisherman or a cross dressing dwarf, he’s still an annoying insect. If he had brains, he’d be more considerate of those who don’t want to see his posts instead of using periodic nick morphing to get around our filters. Flyfish

\More like a ten year old, with no friends, and a ghetto blaster.\ I have had the pleasure of fishing with Muskie on several occasions, twice on the San Juan and once on the Kootenai. He has a gorgeous blonde girlfriend(ive never seen so many stares in my direction thanks to walking with her on several occasions), a nice ride and an even nicer selection of fly rods. Perhaps you are jealous of that? He is a positive, hopeful person and people seem to gravitate to him. He, like I also have the glorious choices of fishing in a still unspoiled setting, which is something you don’t have Mike. Perhaps if someone in Europe had spoken up and made noise a long time ago the fishing and habitat wouldnt be so poor now, and the choices so few.

I have unsubscribed from rec.outdoors.fishing.fly as it is simply too expensive to download all the rubbish. I will occasionally have a look in, using Google ( where I don

I will be tying all weekend at the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo in Southfield, MI., March 11 and 12. I will be set up where the video equipment has always been. I will be tying 5-6 each day using my macro-video system. I have added a wonderful PA system so that all will be able to hear as well as see what I am doing. I will be showing all of the Rivergod bugs as well as concentrating on tips, special techniques and durability. Bring your questions. All of the Rivergod dry flies will be available at The Fly Factory booth. Hope to see you there.

Closest would be the Clackamas and Sandy, both of which run through the metro area. Closest for world class fly fishing would be the North Santiam, about an hour south of PDX

Go to the Deschutes river. You’ll have a chance to catch trout and steelhead. Check at a couple of the fly shops in Portland. One other fishery that will be going on is the Tillomook bay/river. You can go for the BIG chinook in the Trask or Wilson rivers. There are other rivers on the coast that have this same fall chinook run going on. When you get into town call Fisherman’s Outdoor at 503-283-8310 or Great American Tackle at 503-650-2662 they can direct you in the right direction. Guess that just goes to show you…. I floated the section around Mill City/Lyons last weekend. Caught and released well over 30 fish in 4 hours. Waded one bar and caught at least 10 in 20 minutes. Most in the 10"-12" range, a few dinks and one truly huge cut. Maybe the river isn’t the problem….
Response:
Well, good for you! I didn’t have my flyrod along on Sunday, but was keeping a watchful eye for rising fish, and saw none. Guess we have different opinions on what constitutes a "World Class river." I like the N. Santiam, but have never seen it given that kind of status. Also, never have seen it listed in any "top rivers" articles. I didn’t see my experience as a "problem" as I wasn’t fishing. If I was and I heard about your success the prior day, I would readily admit that it was my problem! Good luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Wow, I surely wouldn’t call the N. The North Santiam can be excellent for trout and steelhead until they start dumping lots of water out of Detroit Reservoir. For bank fishers I would rank it behind the Deschutes, but for float fishers, there are some outstanding areas. Thomas Gilg

I was hoping that someone out there might have some information about flyfishing in Brazil. I was thinking of travelling to either Pantanal or Rio Grande do Sul. Hi J.Rice A quick call to Bob Jacklin’s Fly Shop will get you up-to-the second information (406-646-7336). The water conditions are changing so rapidly you need very current conditions. Thank you for sharing this info. It would help to know which creek. I fish the Stanislaus often, and when I was there for mem. day I had the same luck as you. it would be great to know a secondary place to go. One question though, are the rainbows native or stocked, if they are stocked it would suggest that the creek is popular, is that so? TimFLYFISH Dream of flyfishing, but also let the fish dream. C & R
This is not rocket science. You break out the gazetteer, you look for streams that might be large enough to hold trout, you go check them out. The one I found is right along a road. In a normal year there probably wouldn’t be enough water, except for a couple of holes that never dry up. That’s where the trout survive. The ‘bows were pretty silvery, suggesting plants, but a little small for the standard DF&G planter. I was clearly not the first person to find this hole. Happy hunting! Sean Brennan (std disclaimers)
Response:
Tried fishing the Stanislaus below Tulloch dam yesterday. The river is easily 1 ft above normal levels. The visibility was ~2ft. I tried my standard collection of bead-heads w/o success. Did not see any rises during the 3 hours I was there. Spent several hours in the afternoon on a little creek near Sonora (No Tim, I’m not saying which one) which in a normal year would probably be a trickle, but now has a healthy flow. Pulled 4 rainbows out with a BH prince, all 8-10". Just at dusk caught another on an Elk-hair Caddis. A thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank goodness for the gazetteer! Best wishes, Sean Brennan (std disclaimers)
