Will do that, John. The participation has slowed – 37 tickets right now. BTW, I ain’t doin’ this to regain any investment. Remember when I bought it from Vern that several kind folks sent me money which I sent to a teacher in Maine who teaches his 9th graders fly fishing. Dave

I use an Orvis ‘Spey’ reel it seems well made, sturdy and holds plenty of backing with both a floating and sinking line. Don’t know if it is available in USA as it is made in England. When I bought it it was

OK Al, here’s something that will help you out, I found it in an outdoor magazine. The entire ad is as follows: "Bait Stick" is a stretchy, sticky glue that will attach live insects to a hook. Wrap a match-head-sized glob on a hook and touch the glue to an ant, salmon egg…whatever. The bug won’t die because the glue is non-toxic; instead, the insect will thrash and kick around. Can you think of a better fish attractant? The glue never dries out and continues to work underwater. Insects will even stay attached when being cast with a fly rod. ($7.50; 734-676-7772) There, now quit worrying about finding a harness to fish your live bait from. Call the phone number, part with $7.50 US and go feed some fish. Also is part of the aversion to livebait the fact that you are sacrificing
livebait for fishing. But fishing is hooking fish so what’s the big deal The aversion has nothing to do with "sacrificing" livebait. The aversion lies in the fact that often times while fishing livebait, a fish is gut hooked, rendering them unreleasable, or if you do, there is a strong possibility that the fish will die. If you are paying attention to the overall attitude of the members of this newsgroup, you will notice that the majority of us would rather fish, catching and releasing them to enjoy another day. I’m sure that most of us release in excess of 90% of the fish we catch. It’s harder to do when the fish are gut hooked as happens more often when fishing livebait. Also, many members feel that there is more skill involved in fooling a fish into striking an artificial than to feed livebait to a bass. To many of us, it’s not the actual fish being caught, it’s the process of getting the strike in the first place that trips our triggers. And if you don’t understand that, maybe you should take up golf. i was wondering what Peta types would think of it.
My thoughts on what PETA types would think of it??? Who cares??? —

Hello Albert, Have you ever had a mess of crickets get loose n your truck or had earthworms bust out in your fridge and crawl on the meatloaf or had a minnow jump out the bucket and wedge his way underneath the seat where he would stay and stink for Tommy Rilee
Tom No i have never had that happen to me. I’ve heard the fridge thing before. Rotting minnows under a seat make a fishing boat smell like what it should smell like. I’m not afraid of the bait or getting my hands dirty. If your afraid of the bait how are you with the fish. It’s best to think like your quarry (fish) then you will have no qualms about the bait. Al
Response:
Al, if you try and analyze what the PETA people think, it’ll drive you crazy, because they are crazy. I’m not any proponent of hurting animals needlessly, and would never do it purposely. I used to hunt (a lot when younger) and fished both then and now, and it doesn’t bother me to eat what I shot or caught, which meant having to dispatch them. PETA nuts equate the equality of animals to people. I don’t. That includes live bait. If you’re interested in live bait harnesses, you can probably find them on line at BPS or Cabela’s. Warren2

Face it: Clinton’s problem is that he kicked the moribund Republican assholes out of office and managed the country into prosperity. Along the way a whole new segment of America’s creative people got rich. Its the old guard and their wanna-bees, and their campfollowers, who hate his ass the most. He had the audacity to steal the few good ideas the Rs had and it makes them furious. That, and of course his blowjob, and probably the fact that he is a Southern populist. They hated Carter too, as much for his accent as anything. Maybe someone can remind me just when and who was the last R pres who gave half a shit for working people in this country. The Rs had a chance with McCain. I would have overlooked some of his repub claptrap (I do it all the time with goofy Dem ideas) and voted for him just because he came off as honest and his own man. Instead the money boys gave the nomination to a clown that makes Gore look like a paragon of competence. If you find a answer/solution to this one, you got my vote. A lot of people my age are fed up with the business as usual, self-serving, pork barrel politics that we have witnessed all of our lives. Maybe in the near future the X’ers will clean house, who knows. I look at roff and I think at times I could build the perfect President by taking bits and pieces of people here. At times I find the best of people here can match those found anywhere else. Take a little of Wayno’s diplomacy, ET1&2’s attitude, RW’s touchy feeling stuff (or his stock market knowledge, perhaps both), a little LaCourse for his arboriculture and knowledge of pets for the White House (baaa-d), a lot of Mike C for his way with words, vast knowledge base and willingness to help, a little Dave S to say what needs to be said, a little Vern for his innocence and honesty, a little Opie for his sense of humor, and a little Mr G because we need someone who is crazy enough to actually do the things that need to be done. I could go on and on and on but this was too long as it is. If I didn’t mention you, don’t worry because I didn’t forget you. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t put anyone to sleep as I made the list. Frank, Wayne, Frank, Steve, Levi, Jon, John, Peter and the rest of you that I didn’t mention, I will some other time because you all have ingredients for the recipe. Warren X#-[

Fishing in Our Future?
Question:
This group makes me think about where things are going in our sport. I like to pick out trends I see, fantasize about them and follow them to their extreme conclusions. Below is one of the perverted, but maybe not too far fetched, scenarios I came up with. Jim and Bob arrived at the Neiman Marcus Orvis shop and met up with Rod, their guide for the day. They were looking forward for a chance to get away from it all and rip some lips on the famous Turquoise river. A short ride took them to the base of the massive dam. While they were waiting for the Ranger directing traffic to give them the OK to launch, Rod started checking out their equipment. It was the latest and still showroom fresh. "I’m going to replace that 20X tippet you have on for some 15X. 20X is good enough for the little 10 or 15 pounders but when we get into some good fish you’ll be glad you have the 15X," He said. "What’s the new, hot fly?" Jim asked. "Rod’s Killer Krill (patent pending)," Rod replied, "Since they engineered the krill to live in fresh water and stocked the reservoir with them, that’s all the hogs will eat. They won’t even open their mouths for any of the insects that fishermen used to imitate. The fly is tied with Natural Scent Dubbing, so it smells and tastes just like krill, as well as looks like it. It’s the only fly you’ll need." The Ranger signaled to them that their turn had come and they quickly launched their boat and proceeded down stream. Rod skillfully maneuvered the craft to maintain the mandated 20′ between them and other boats. After a short drift, they arrived at the first hole and Rod switched to auto pilot to maintain distance and keep their place in line. He then started his instruction, "These fish are something special. By combining DNA from extinct species, they engineered a Super Trout that fights like an Atlantic Salmon, grows huge like a King and has the beauty of a Greenback Trout. They’re sterile, so all they think about is food and with the dam regulated temperatures and flows, all they do is eat all day, everyday." "They line up all across the bottom, gobbling up every krill that passes. All you need to do is cast up stream and with your Indi-glasses you’ll be able to follow the electro-indicator in your fly as it drifts along the bottom. When your fly disappears, set the hook because it’s been eaten." The guys started casting. Jim had fished a little when he was a kid and was having some trouble because he kept fighting the rod by trying to cast on his own. Rod said, "Just let the rod and reel do their job, quit fighting them. Throw a short length of line behind you, hold the rod straight up and let its molecular memory do the rest. The reel will keep feeding out line and when your cast is far enough, drop the rod tip." The advice helped Jim and after his third decent cast, he got the first hook up. Rod cheered him on, praising Jim’s skill while knowing full well that with the 100 lb. test 15X tippet and the "smart" rod, Jim could land a truck. Fishing was great, as usual, and either Jim or Bob had on a fish every 20 or so casts. They made slow, steady progress down stream, filling in the spot vacated by the boat just below them. After releasing another 30 pounder, Rod reminded them, "This is a restricted take, Trophy river. The first fish caught under 4 pounds must be kept and the fishing for that angler stopped for the day." Rod knew that the state only stocked "Super" trout over 4 pounds in the upper river but in "Keeper Hole", just above the take out, they stocked plenty of old fashion stockers. This was a perfect arrangement for the outfitters, their clients could C&R hogs for a couple of hours, then catch their dinner just before take out. Things, as usual, went according to plan. Jim and Bob caught lots of fish that Rod recorded on Stereo Tape before releasing them. Jim and Bob each caught their dinner and Rod got his tip. That evening while eating their trout dinner and drinking their favorite tiny-mini-micro brew, Trout Sweat, Jim turned to Bob and said, "You know, it just doesn’t get any better than this." Willi
Response:
Willi Thats not a fantasy; its a nightmare. But you do have the writer’s touch. How about another scenario; one where Jim and Bob remember how the fisheries Dr. Frankensteins had been making great progress on the supertrout, and Bob and Jim had even caught a few in the experimental river, but the whole technology had been lost when some crazed old coot from an island somewhere near Seattle had burned their lab to the ground, hunted down every last one of the technologists, but finally succumbed to the authorities screaming something about deconstructing the meniscus. Dave
Response:
Actually, the guys at Macrohard are working on a virtual reality fly fishing kit. You can plug it in any time, any where. Choose the type of fishing you want (small stream, lake, saltwater, etc.), level of difficulty, wind direction/speed, if the fish are easy or hard to land, etc. The game comes with a virtual fly rod that you wave around…if you present the fly well and you tie your virtual fly onto your virtual tippet ok, the virtual fish will take. What a kick. Also, you can choose if you want Cindy Crawford as your guide. If you choose Cindy, she gives you a kiss everytime you land a fish. You get the sensation of the fish fighting through the virtual rod. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Bob E., Rochester, NY

Can one driving to good fishing from Anchorage, Alaska?
Question:
The mission requires a boat, the Kenai is the best one to start on. only a few minor rapids. there is a boat rental in Anch. called Wild Alaska Rivers Co. on old seward hwy. (907-344-wild) get a raft. The only bummer on the trip is a lake that must be rowed across , you can also get a motor for more $. but the trip on the skyloc lake is worth it. Many camping possibiltiy and Bear are abundant. A fisherman on the russian river was mauled on the butt, lucky. It’s the best way to avoid the crowds. Iteleboard (Jon Y.)
Response:
Yes, there are plenty of road accessible streams and rivers, but getting a guide is really the way to go. Some of the rivers are quite robust and I wouldn’t want to fish them without boat access. Also, for Kings especially, guides can quickly point out the common resting holes. To begin, I would recommend getting the fishing regulations from the DNR and other tourist information. These are very precise, and will point out flies only spots.Plenty of famous spots on the Kenai, but if you go for Kings it could be "combat fishing". There are plenty of good spots off the main drag to Talkeetna…check the fishing regs for flies only locations. This can also be mobbed during the King runs. For an absolutely fabulous car tour, drive an hour or two to Portage, put your car on the flat bed of a train to Whitier. It goes right through the mountains…there’s no other way to get there. Then at Whitier put the car on the fairy to Valdez (about 8 hrs.). Fantastic views of Price William sound, glaciers, whales ect. Spend the night at Valdez and fish the Copper River basin. Good spots near Glenallen, without the Anchorage-based crowds (still recommedn a guide though). From there take the dirt road to Denali, see the park, then down to fish the Talkeetna basin. The perfect Alaska trip, and it will bring right next to some of the best fishing they have to offer. Kings on Fly rod…WOW! Monster rainbows…delicate char. Lucky dog. Have a good one. Tom

Dan: Your query is one I have pursued for over 25 yrs. Best suggestions: Kenai River (if you can tolerate crowds), Deep Creek(same reservation), Anchor River (same) and a hike into Crescent Lake for greyling (float tube helpful); all above on the Kenai peninsula. North of Anchorage try the Kepler Bradley Lakes (buy local folding maps which show lakes and raods) and further north, try lakes and streams along the Denali Hwy for wonderful greyling fishing, esp Clearwater Crk. Local dealers at mcAfee’s fly shop and Mtn View Sprts. are helpful w/ directions. Good luck, Tom Nelson

Hello, I’d like to go Anchorage, Alaska this summer and flyfish for any species of char, salmon, or trout without using guides or lodges. I’d like to try to do this trip by driving from Anchorage (any distance) or taking a ferry and then wading or paddling on any streams or lakes. I’d like to camp or stay in motels. So where and when are the best places for independent fishing, Kenai, North of Anchorage, or Kodiak, ect? Are there any good books on the subject? Thanks in advance. Dan Janies University of Florida

Where Can Beginners Practice Flyfishing nr SF Bay Area?
Question:
I’ll keep this short & sweet. We’re just learning to fly fish. We’d like to go somewhere and practice our casting and line handling skills in moving water in mid-May. We’d prefer not to need waders. We’d prefer not to drive too far from the Bay Area. It’s not crucial that we actually Catch Fish, but it would be more fun if we thought we had at least some tiny chance of doing so. I thought about the American R. in Sacramento, but don’t know the shoreline. Is it possible to fish w/o waders? Are there some clear, non-brushy areas where we won’t get too many snags on the back cast? I’d prefer not to go to the Russian R., because we drive north on 101 several times a year for wine tasting etc., and we’re just getting a little bored with it. I know a nice wide open gravel-banked stretch of the McCloud river, but that’s a pretty hefty drive. Any advice, tips, etc? Thanks Mark

Mark, The water’s not moving, and you surely won’t catch fish, but a good place to practice casting is at the casting pools in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. There are generally plenty of expert casters hanging around the pools who are willing to offer casting advice to beginners. It doesn’t take the place of actually being astream, but it’s quite convenient… Fred — Fred L. Templin

Weelll, isn’t that special?:) I’m so happy Mark and his friend are adding flyfishing to their collectoin of really cool things to do. I don’t suppose Mark will be arriving at streamside in a late model BMW now will he? It’s FISHING, Mark, you’re supposed to get wet, and tangled up in "brushey areas which snag the backcast". All I can say is: good luck, and don’t leave home w/out your american express card. P. Dundon

Yellowstone info wanted, please
Question:
Joseph M. Mc Clain can you e-mail me your address and l’ll send you a list of the patterns I take to the Yellowstone region in early July. Sorry I lost your original post, work just keeps getting in the way.
Response:
I am taking the family to Yellowstone Park June 21-July 2. Of course, I would like to try fishing as long as we’re there. Any info as to likely hatches, regulations, fly patterns, not-so- ridiculously crowded streams, etc. would be appreciated. Please e-mail to me at the above address (or post, if you think it might be entertaining) All advice, warnings, etc. gratefully appreciated. — joe in joeland

I’ll be in the same area about the same time. I’m taking the family to the Bighorn for four nights three days of drift fishing (6/29, 6/30 & 7/1) then I’ll move to Island Park below West Yellowstone for ten days. We’ll tour the park and fish the madison, Henry’s Fork (box and ranch), the Ruby River and some of the streams and lakes in and around the Park. There is a book available in the Park book stores on fishing the Park. It’s not bad. The Yellowstone river is full of easy to catch cuts but don’t fish it it won’t be open for a couple of weeks (Mid July). Float tubing yellowstone lake in the mornings always works. I like patterns with peacock for cuts. You may see some callibaetis (speckle winged) mayflys comming off the lake. I can’t give you specific patterns for the area there are just too many rivers with different micro climates and bug hatches. Some bugs you’re likely to see: – Salmonflys – Mayflies – PMD’s (Pale Morning Duns) – Baetis (Little blue wing olives). – Callibaetis (speckle winged ) – Flav’s (little western green drakes) Probable gone by the time you get there. – Caddis – evening caddis sizes #16 &18 # 3 fly rite dubbing. on the Madison I like the size 18 sparkle caddis emerger I’ve talked to Renee Harrop and Mike Lawson and the and the jury’s out on how the Ranch section of the Henry’s fork will fish. It went almost dry last year and is almost at flood stage now. They are trying to flush years of silt out (drought buildup). The ranch is my favorite location but I may avoid it this year due to years of managing it as an irrigation canal. The bottem line is you can’t miss, you’ll have fun in a beautiful setting. See you there.
