Well, it would be acceptable, but only after it is cleared by the protocol committee.  If you’ll send me the details on the book, I’ll be happy to forward it on to them…. Seriously, though, generally speaking, the only place a "For Sale" post is _strictly_ appropriate is in a ".forsale" newsgroup or other such newsgroup that specifically allows "for sale" postings.  But ROFF’s charter is, at best, more observed by the ignoring of same. What this means is: "who knows what reaction a particular post might garner?"  If your post is simple, honest posting pointing to a personal sale of a book or books, I’d say post away and ignore any flames.   One thing on pointing to auctions, whether here or another newsgroup, starting the subject line with a "FA:" is considered proper as "FS:" means that it is "for sale," not "for auction."  Also, indicate your location. Yesterday I got news from a friend that Sydney Harbour was really firing, with big schools of bonito and yellowtail kingfish feeding on top nearly all morning – he and his wife got several good bonnies on fly and lost a kingie, fly line and all before leaving, sick of catching ‘em. I got my gear out before bed, putting a Teeny ‘head on my 11 wt and an intermediate on the 8. The sky was clearing after intermittent drizzle since Christmas Eve. Force fins are great if you have to hike in with them.  They are very light, and provide reasonable propulsion.   For most of my tubing, however, I use a longer, stiff scuba fin that gives me more power. 2. Does anyone knows how many models they have.

I think they have two, one fits all sizes, one comes in S, M. L. XL, etc. 3. Do they (Force Fin) have a web site?   Don’t know?

Personally, if you are driving to the lake, or the walk is short, forget about anything but SCUBA PRO Jet fins.  With these large rubber fins you can tube for hours and hours and never tire.  Your maneuverablilty is unbelievable and best of all you can tube faster than most powerboats out there!!!

But at the same time, I wanted to be able to wear my wading boots with my fins, something that Force Fin fins will allow me to do. I was also hoping that the Force Fin fins will at least allow me to have the same thrusting power as a good pair of scuba fins. But by some of the responses I have been getting from folks here, it seems that a good pair of scuba fins may be more superior to a pair of Force Fin fins when it comes to propelling one’s float tube on the water. Look for fins that: 1- Cover your heel so you don’t chafe holes in your wet suit and don’t fill up easily with mud and sand when slogging around in the shallows. You can also wear booties to protect waders but it’s one more thing to buy, lug around and lose. 2- FLOAT. Diving fins are usually slightly negatively bouyant. Float tube fins do get scrubbed off when doing the heavy weed thing. Use tethers if your fins don’t float. 3- Flex rather easily. Diving fins are propelled by a slightly bent leg with most of the energy arising from the thigh, buttock and lower back. A float tube fin is propelled by the quads and a kick from the foot. Your legs will easily tire and your foot can cramp after heavy duty kicking with a long bladed, stiff dive fin. The thing is – I don’t want to pay $100+ for a pair of Force Fin fins if it does not perform at least as good as a pair of scuba fins. On large lakes, one does not want to expend a lot of extra energy to propel a float tube after a 3+ hour hike to get to a high mountain lake. Don. Personally, if you are driving to the lake, or the walk is short, forget about anything but SCUBA PRO Jet fins.  With these large rubber fins you can tube for hours and hours and never tire.  Your maneuverablilty is unbelievable and best of all you can tube faster than most powerboats out there!!!

As far as the wading bots go, I use scuba fins and a pair of good ol’ Converse tennies for boots, and they work great.  I can outrace my buddy in his force fins quite handily.  He gets into the tube and the water more easily, however.

I know that Force Fins are very popular in northern California with the float-tubers. They make lots of models, but the fly shops usually carry the original model and the Adjustable. The originals come in sizes small, medium, medium/large, large, extra large and xx-large. The Adjustable come in one size and will fit over a boot or almost anything. The original sells for $85 to $99 and the Adjustable sells for $119 to $135. We sell the Caddis to people that are not traveling great distances in a day of fishing. there is no significant difference between building a 2 or 4 piece rod with the exception being that 2 additional ferrules require wrapping. as far as 4 wt or 6wt…….the smaller the circumference of the blank, the more difficult it becomes to wrap the guides in an aesthetically pleasing manner….. please drop me a line if you want to discuss further.. regards, rich at wild waters fly fishing

I haven’t found a big difference between a 4 or 2pc. in building it. 2 more spines to ID, two more ferrules to wrap. I might inlay a single metalic strand at the ferrule, but that’s a tiny bit of work. If you want to own the 4 pc. just do it or you’ll end up wishing you did later. In theory you would think it would be easier to wrap the first 2 guides on a 12 weight than it would on a 4 weight, the 12 being a thicker blank, but in reality the difference is not that big a deal. A Loomis IMX (2 pc.) 4 weight has a size 4 tip, and the 12 weight in the same blank is a 4.5, for example. That’s an extreme example. The difference between a 4 and 6 weight won’t even be noticable. Disclaimer is that I haven’t built anything smaller than an 8 weight in 12 years or so, so my memory of trout rods is cloudy, but I’d say build the rod you want to own, the differences you’re worrying about aren’t a big deal.                                                         jc

Hi Bill, I really recommend you check in with your local fly shop or fly fishing club for some expert help, especially with casting.  Just one lesson with a qualified instructor can save you years of frustration trying to learn by your self. You can find your local fly shop in the phone directory and a local club by calling the Federation of Fly Fisher’s at 800-618-0808. Now to answer some of your questions.  Size & Type of Line: The line you need should be balanced to your fly rod – you indicated your rod is a nine weight.  That is the weight you need for that rod, however that weight is a little heavy unless you are fishing in salt water or going after salmon or steelhead Tippet: A tippet is the fine monofilament that is attached to the end of the leader.  You tie the fly on this material. Leader:  In some fishing conditions leader length is the difference between catching fish and not catching fish. As an "all around" leader for fishing free stone streams I purchase a 7 1/2 foot 4x leader and then tie on another 1 1/2 feet of tippet material to bring me to a nine foot leader.  But that is only a starting point.  There are some situations where my leader will on be 4 feet in length and others where it will be close to 20 feet. How far to cast:  That is a tough question.  I feel it’s a good idea to be able to comfortably cast 30 – 50 feet.  That doesn’t mean you have to cast that far to fish, only that you have the skill.  You’ll be less tired at the end of the day if you do not have to continually "push the envelope" of your skills — on the other hand pushing your skill is how you improve. Bill,         The best advice I could give a new flyfisher is to get attached to a local fly shop and ask as manay questions as you can …. and remember all the answers.  Take the time to get some casting instruction.  It’ll be the best half hour you can spend.  Also, try to get a copy of "The Curtis Creek Manifesto", it’s a cartoon-type magazine/book that explains all the facets of fly fishing in simple terms that we all can understand.  Just remember, that if you keep fish, only keep what you need and that a fish killed is on that will never be caught again.  Some of us like to "Love ‘em and ‘Leave ‘em!"

What are you fishing for?  A 9-wt. line is quite heavy — to heavy for bass/bluegills/trout, more appropriate for light salt water.  You must use a line that fits your rod though.  Too light and you have to get a _lot_ of line out to cast properly (not recommended for a beginner) and a heavy line will overload your rod.  I would recommend a moderately priced weight-forward line (Cortland 333 or something in that price range) and a moderately priced, simple reel (Pflueger Medalist is the old standard).  Too cheap and you get junk.  For now, you present reel may be okay, but get a new line.  If possible, cast a test line on your rod; it’s possible that a 9-wt. isn’t best. A leader delivers your fly to the fish.  The length depends on the water and the fish, but it’s best to use the shortest one you can get away with.  Again, what kind of fish are you afetr in what conditions? The tippet is the very last part of the leader, and often replaced with a new section.  It must match your fly so that it behaves naturally, and sometime you just have to experiment to get a good match. Casting distance depends again on the fish and conditions.  Distance is nowhere near as important as control; it’s totally irrelevant to the fish!  You want to put the fly in the right position with the shortest practical cast, so you can 1) control the fly and 2) hook the fish. Hope this gets you started.  There should be a tackle shop near you which could advise you about what’s best for your area. Suggest you contact Kiene’s Fly Shop in Sacramento for best bet info. They may suggest you try for half-pounder steelhead on the American right in Sacramento.  Puhta Creek above Winters toward Lake Berryessa is another possibility.  Go with Kiene’s suggestions!

When I was there shore fishing was permitted on the north side of the island, but much of the south side was a marine sanctuary. Anyways, from shore I found the best fishing to happen at night from the ‘Cabanas del Caribe’ (which may or may not still exist) north.I was using a fly rod and a white 1/0 deceiver, and had a blast with baby tarpon and horse eyed jacks (they’ll pull your arm off!) I saw some snappers further north, but didn’t have my rod at the time. I saw one bonefish, which I spooked, at the northernmost point of the beach, where everything turns to jungle. There are supposedly flats on either end of the island. The book "Fishing Atlas of the World" a big coffee table type book has some details on finding these flats as I recall. You are supposed to have a fishing license, which I believe is free for shore fishing, but I never could find the oficina de pesca and nobody gave me any trouble about it. The boat fishing is supposed to be great, but I didn’t try it. Oh, I was there in mid march. Not sure what January will bring, but it will definitely be better than the -10F I got up to this morning :-                                         john cloyd
