Politicians will drink your Scotch, steal your money, dispoil your land, leave cigar burns on the upholstery, and screw your women. Lawyers……bring their own Scotch. Getting a group together to fly to warm climates in the middle of our winter to catch large trout should prove little enough of a challenge. — Wayne
Well, as long as they bring their own Scotch, the other things are almost forgiveable I guess
We’re thinking of calling the lodge "The Royal Humpy", but that conjures up all sorts of double entendres, especially to an Aussie. In case you’re not familiar with it, a ‘humpy’ is a rather rough and ready bush dwelling, which the lodge definitely won’t be! Of course apart from being a trout fly, another meaning for humpy could only be imagined, but as for a busload of lawyers being involved, well…..

Sorry – couldn’t resist it. But seriously – if anyone is genuinely interested in a holiday to the Tasmanian highlands next year, let me know. The lake we’re building on is 280 acres, and is part of the London Lakes complex, which many will have heard of. The lake is called Highland Waters, and is part of a 586 acre property. The trout are big, plentiful, and a bugger to catch – a real challenge. Oh, and did I mention that the scenery is beautiful? And the lodge will be very comfortable, with a deck overlooking the lake, and plenty of room for the barbecue on which to cook the big rainbows you’ll catch there too. The browns are catch-and-release (that’s how they come to be so big and so smart) but the rainbows are catch-and-barbecue

As a long-time lurker but infrequent poster here, can I push my own little barrow too? We are building a "little" lodge on one of Tasmania’s highland lakes, a fully private fishery with monster wild brown trout up to 10 lbs or more. Sight-fishing to tailing brownies in the Tasmanian highlands is really something special. We are looking at rentals on a weekend or weekly basis, and would be keen to know if there is any significant interest on ROFF. Building should be finished by December/January. Closed season is the winter 3-months from June through August. Rental prices not yet figured out. Wayne – you could always come out on a ‘freebie’ as long as you brought a busload of paying punters with you.
) Mind you – I’m not sure which would be worse – a busload of politicians or a busload of lawyers…. heheh

Question:
I too had a similar experience. Was fishing a new rod and after a while, noticed I wasn’t able to shoot any line out. Must’ve made a few more casts before realizing the guides were frozen solid. My advice? If you’re fishing a small lake, try pouring some prestone in it. Keeps it from freezing. It’s hopeless in a river as the current carries it all downstream and it makes for a very expensive outting. No serious replies please… i was just kidding. Ken. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Ahh, ROFF the beautiful… I was in Utah all this week and at the last minute decided not to take a fly rod. That was a mistake because the weather kept getting warmer and warmer. By Wednesday all of the snow had melted and it was downright warm. Bummer. Guess I shoulda packed along a rod and called bc afterall. Anyway, although I checked in on ROFF from time to time while I was away, it took me quite a while to get caught up. Some truly hilarious stuff this week, indeed. Went fishing yesterday afternoon. Who’d a thunk it would be colder in Raleigh than in Utah? The wind finally died down and I took a quick trip over to the pond. A couple of disinterested takes but nothing landed. I started noticing this really odd scraping sound during my forward cast after I’d been fishing for about 10 minutes. I couldn’t figure out what it was. It kept getting louder and louder. The water wasn’t overly murky so it couldn’t be pond scum–maybe the guides are bent, I thought, or perhaps I missed a guide when I threaded up the rod. Duh. Turns out there was ice on the guides! I had to keep breaking little ice chunks off the guides and line as it kept getting colder and colder. Somehow I thought I was going to be able to fish un-interrupted all year round. <snipped Duh. Turns out there was ice on the guides! I had to keep breaking little ice chunks off the guides and line as it kept getting colder and colder. Somehow I thought I was going to be able to fish un-interrupted all year round. Hmm. –Steve Zimmerman
Geeze Steve, That sounds like a mirror image of what happened to me on my last local pond trip! Definitely no fishing for a while until this cold snap (Ha!) buggers off. It’s kinda good that we’re almost through January. Only two more months before it get’s reasonable again! Who hoo! — Michael Era

Question:
I am looking for anyone that remembers an old lure called the Blue River Spinner . Its origin is believed to be in Southern Indiana and the maker from Shelbyville. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Response:
Being from southern Indiana and having spent forty years in the tackle industry to boot, I am sorry to say that I only recall the name but not any of the specifics about the lure itself. I will certainly research it for you and if I come up with anything, I will pass it along. Best Regards, I am looking for anyone that remembers an old lure called the Blue River Spinner . Will Mickey Mouse take a fly ?
Question:
It looks like I will be attending a conference at Disneyland in Anneheim early next month. Any flyfishing (fresh or Saltwater) in this area ? I am willing to travel within reason. I am not from the USA, so if you specify a fish species, please also add any info on line weights, flies etc, as I noticed on my last trip to the USA that fish names vary considerably around the world. Are there any good shops in the area who could advise me ? Thanks Bruce…..

– I’m not sure about the actual fishing in that immediate area, but you’ll be within a long cast with a shooting head of one of the biggest fly shops around – Bob Marriott’s. how to fight bigger fish????
Question:
Hmmm…fighting fish up to 8lbs. in fast moving water on 6x tippet??…boy, I’d say what you have there is a spectator sport. Hookem’ and watch them go!…all my flyfishing experts that a consult with on an almost daily basis tell me to keep the rod fairly high, and only lower the tip of the rod when the fish jumps. They also tell me you shouldn’t expect to land many 8 pounders in fast water with 6x tippet.
Response:
Can anyone give me some advice on how to land fairly large (up
to 8lbs.) brown trout on a 6x tippet? Try a .357 magnum. Otherwise, I would question whether it is the *tippet* that is bothering the fish in pocket water, unless you are still using nylon which does tend to be a bit stiff. Softer tippet material in a heavier weight may be worth a try. — Ken Clark Ft. Lupton, CO
Response:
: strike. The chemists of the world have done some amazing things with : tippet, and 6X is pretty darn strong these days. Thank ya, thank ya very much! I’m glad someone is paying attention. Can anyone give me some advice on how to land fairly large (up to 8lbs.) brown trout on a 6x tippet? I have heard that it is better to keep the rod tip low because sideways pressure doesn’t spook the fish as much as upward pressure does. any thoughts on this? My problem is that I fish the pocket water section of the Provo River and because of precarious footing, I can’t chase the trout up or down stream and if I use a heavier tippet, they won’t take the fly. Help!!!!!! G-Man

I am getting upset about the flagrant selling of merchandise on this group without warning in the subject. I just called one of the 800 numbers to tell them that. If enough of us do it, especially on their nickel, the practice may diminish. William Buchman

My solution is to copy the message in its entirety and e-mail it back to the sender. I doubt if it does much good, but it sure makes me feel better.
Response:
I’m always looking for new items for flyfishing, if someone recommends a product or a guide or a business I feel helped. But the business itself should not advertise. Let them buy space in a mag. Karl
