White River Fly fishing
Question:
My wife and I are looking to spend that last three weeks in Nov on the White River fly fishing. We would prefer a cabin on the river and would posibly like a guide or two while there. Does anyone have a suggestion of lodging and guide? — Stay connected, Carl D. Sgro
Response:
Carl – I would Highly recommend the Fulton’s lodge – Dale and Rona have a nice situation going – I have stayed there many times and they are the hosts for SRG(Southern Rodmakers Gathering) – here is a link with their info – http://www.mtnhome.net/fultons/ Wayne

I have stayed at Dale Fulton’s place too and will be back again. He also owns a nice fly shop there in MT Home, called Blue Ribbon. You will need to call ahead though as it is a popular place. Well situated for both the White and the N.Fork River nearby (when the generators hose up the water and you’re without in the boat dept.) If you get the chance make a date to hit the Rainbow Lodge on the Little Red too. Nice large trout and good access. K

Question:
I fished Hood Canal yesterday with my fatherinlaw. We arrived at the beach at about 10:00 and just after getting our rods set up, my fatherinlaw was trying to set up our drift with the tide when I noticed a couple of coho rolling on the surface. I immediately started casting an ‘experimental’ floating candle fish pattern and they were all over it, unfortunately the line fouled around the hook. I switched to a dry fly and again they were all over it. I caught about 10-12 coho and 6-7 sea-run cutthroat in about 4 hours of fishing. The best fish of the day was about a 3-4 lb coho that launched itself about 4-5 times, and the best cutthroat was a feisty one about 16". Most of the fish were caught of a dry fly, which is just an absolute rush when they take it. This was my fatherinlaw first time flyfishing in 21 years, he caught one 14" cutt and had several other strikes. He said he had a great time and he will do more flyfishing. Boy it feels good to get somebody interested in the sport. Darin

You’re not kidding! It was 1 1/2 hours each way. We could’ve had another 2 hours fishing if we’d gone to a closer ramp. You ever fish further south in the Canal?
I tried the zoo humpie fishery at Hoodsport one evening after work a couple of years ago. Lining up with 20-30 other guys looking for that 1 fish is not my idea of fun. I lasted about a 1/2 hour before I called it quits. Long drive from PT for a 1/2 hr fishing. Other than that, no, I haven’t fished further south, except for the Dose, Duck, and the Hamma rivers. Darin
Response:
Hey Darin, On the Kitsap County side of the bridge turn left and go north about 1 mile and there is Salisbury (sp) Point. I do believe it is a park but they have an excellent boat ramp. In addition you may want to look at the Point no Point area to fish. Lots of fish being caught from the beach and boats. I couldn’t entice any to my fly rod but I saw a few other flyfishers catch em. Primarily humpies ( in the ocean phase no hump) and silvers. Dave —

Mike, I generally like dogpile too, but here’s another that searches 37 search engines at the same time. When I’m having trouble finding something, I resort to this. The only problem is taking the time to go through all the stuff it finds.
Do you have the URL? I have a couple of search systems, and I get plenty of hits on some of this stuff, but it takes hours sorting them out for anything useful. TL MC
Response:
Try www.prophish.com I think that they make something similar to what you describe. As to it’s price and suitability for your purpose, I couldn’t say. I don’t know what search engine(s) you use, but try www.dogpile.com next
Thanks Tom, I have seen the prophish system, very nice but mainly for kayaks and catamarans, etc, far too expensive anyway. I simply need a right angled drive transmission in a sealed housing, on whichj a sprocket may be mounted. Ordinary bicycle bearings etc, and a stainless chain would complete the assembly. I want to keep my hands free when driving the boat, and I do not wish to rely on engines. If absolutely necessary I will build one, but experience suggests this also takes considerable time and money. Perhaps a lawn tractor transmission or similar would be appropriate. I will keep looking. Thanks. TL MC

You can always add the boat name to this search string for narrower results. Don’t use quotes unless you are positive that the boat name is exactly as you type it, otherwise you won’t get the results you want. Good luck, and watch out for those lorries! Tom G

Antique fiberglass question
Question:
I just received my latest rod purchase in the mail today, an old SQUARE fiberglass rod. The seller thinks its from the 1940’s. Its a seven foot rod in a cream color. On the butt it says- " Pan Fish FLY ROD PF-7 For HDH or D" It has a green aluminum downlocking reel seat and the wraps are done with different color thread but its all mixed up, each guide has 4 or 5 colors of thread mixed. Its a cool looking rod. I fished it this evening and landed several fish, of course the biggest one shook the fly. Had my best luck with a 24 cream Griffith’s gnat. This thing’s a dream for midging… But HEAVY! Does anyone know of this rod, when it might have been built and what exactly does HDH and D mean? Any help would be appreciated….. Matt M. P.S. No, Big Dale, it’s not for sale

Hey Matt, Don’t know much about 40’s fiberglas but HDH translates to DT6. — Ken Fortenberry Illini 3 – Tar Heels 1
Response:
does HDH and D mean? Any help would be appreciated….. Matt M.
This is a dimensional description. The H corresponded, IIRC, to 0.025 inch diameter. Each letter backward added 0.005. Thus, D would be 0.045. Accuracy in these dimensions was not a stron point for line manufacturers. Bill

Wes" Wes, if I recall correctly from a previous post, these rods are the Sage Youth Rods that have been discontinued. The rod is of Graphite One construction 6 weight. I bought one for my son from my local fly shop several years ago for $165 and that included the bag, rod case, reel and a cheap line. While these are great beginner rods, they should not be confused with the other Sage rods. There is a huge difference in power and presentation. Mike

Hi All, Those are Sage Youth Rods that were discontinued. I think they sold for about $135. They are really a 7′9" #5 rod that Sage labeled as a #6 for kids. At a $100 they would be a great rod for small water dry fly fishing for anyone. Bill Kiene Kiene’s Fly Shop Sacramento,CA,USA 800/4000FLY www.kiene.com
