Sinking Lines
Question:
I’m thinking of buying a sinking line, but cannot afford any more trips to the Orvis shop
I’m looking at the Cortland lines ( $38 CDN ) and the Scientific Anglers ( $46 CDN ) 1) Anyone have an opinion on these lines ? ( good / not so good , etc ) 2) I have 2 rods ( 5wt and 8wt ) Which one should I get the sinking line for ? I bought the 8wt for salmon ( floating lines only allowed ) but may start using it on some large still waters I fish. Thanks for you comments Craig Montreal,Quebec Canada

I *really* like the Cortland uniform sink lines in the "super-sink" rates. Excellent for dredging while maintaining some semblance of contact with the fly. 2) I have 2 rods ( 5wt and 8wt ) Which one should I get the sinking line for ? Whatever floats your boat. I have full sinkers for my 5 weight rods, 7 weight rods, and 9 weight rods. I rarely use anything larger than the 5 for fresh water, the heavier ones are mostly for the salt, and the occasional pike trip… /daytripper

Craig, I’ve had two full sink Cortlands and an SA. They both perfomed as expected. Cheers Visit The Streamer Page at http://members.home.net/pcharles/streamers/index.html

depends on which sink-rate you are looking for. fast sink or intermediate or somewhere in between. besides the 2 companies you mention, if you have a local shop with rio lines give them a look, imo their selection of sinking lines blows away sa or cortland. 2) I have 2 rods ( 5wt and 8wt ) Which one should I get the sinking line for ? if most of your fishing is in lakes, i’d get the lines for the 5 wt. for lake fishing, look at one of the clear intermediate lines if a lot of your fishing is around the shallow margins of lakes. cb

I use Scientific Angler but the Cortland should be just as good. I would suggest you use the larger rod. Most of the fishing with weighted line is for trolling large streamers or for casting out large nymphs into deep lake waters…more suited to the larger rod. Dan in Quebec

_______ The wading life vest is a good idea anymore the older you get. Of course its a good idea no matter how old you are. The next most dangerous thing you can do when fishing is to let safety equipment substitute for common sense. A fly vest with flotation built in is a good idea; wearing one so you can wade deep, swift water that you normally wouldn’t wade is a very bad idea. (I know you weren’t suggesting that, George. Just thought it needed mentioning.) — Rusty Hook Laramie, Wyo Before you buy.

Question:
: Can you help? My brother-in-law enjoys flyfishing (mostly in Michigan where : he lives). We will be vacationing together this August in Boothbay Harbor, : Maine and I would like to be able to point him to a good spot to go : flyfishing. : If you have any suggestions, I would be glad to pass them along. He would : be most interested in a spot which would be an easy drive from Boothbay. : Thanks, : Bob LaMontagne : Cincinnati, OH The Atlantic Ocean. He can use his fresh water rod and 4 feet of 4 pound tippet with small clousers to catch macks and schoolies, which are likely to be 95%-100% of his hhok ups. If he hangs a big striper, he will have a hell of a great time trying to get him in. Tell him to be SURE to wash all his gear in fresh water after each trip. This means pop the spool out of the reel and wash all the rod guides.
Response:
Boothbay has a number of ponds that are very good fishing. Smallmouth bass will readily take poppers and yellow deerhair bugs in the early morning and evening hours. If he wants to try ocean fly fishing, there are stripped Bass that run 12 to 40 inches, mackerel run 8 to 20 inches and Bluefish up to 25 pounds. I f he wants landlocked salmon and brook trout, he’ll have to fish tiny dries or nymphs on bottom. Hi Scott, I was fishing in the Keys about 10 years ago fishing with a friend, Steve Chapell, who lives on Marathon Key. One evening he showed me a poor video copy of a movie that was made by a group of Key West fly fishers? He said a prince from Spain?, Guy Valdeen(sp) was partly responsible for the short film. Jimmy did the sound tack for the movie. It showed fly fishers casting to tarpon with beautiful music and then would it would switch to wild music with a party boat. The deck was covered with blood from killing fish. Bill Kiene Kiene’s Fly Shop Sacramento,CA,USA 800/4000FLY www.kiene.com

Help: Tying flyline to reel & leader to flyline.
Question:
I am just getting started in FF and I don’t know the best method for affixing my flyline to the reel. Also, how do I attach the leader to the line?
Response:
Benjamin, You can tie the backing to the reel, the backing to the fly line than the flyline to the leader/tippet. Reel to backing: Two simple overhand knots. Tag end of backing around spool 2 times and tie an overhand knot in the end. Than a second overhand knot around the standing line. Snug up the second knot. Than pull the standing line tight. The knots should slip down to the spool hub. Fly line to backing and leader to fly line to leader/tippet can both be done with a nail knot. Most books on basic fishing will have a picture of this knot. If you purchased all your tackle from a fly shop, take it back to the shop and ask them to show you how to do it. Most will be happy to do it for you. If you got your tackle mail order, go to your local fly shop and purchase about $100 worth of additional tackle and than ask them to help you. There are are other knots you can use, but I find these knots east to tie. Good luck & Good fishing, — Dennis C. Benjamin, Your local shop will do most of it for you and the other posts suggest the best knots for it but I just wanted to add that from your fly line, the first bit of mono is called the butt section and it’s the thickest diameter part of your leader. It was suggested to me to have a short butt section from my line to my leader and have a loop at the end of it. This way I can make the same loop on my leaders and change leaders forever without having to retie the nail knot at the end of the flyline. Whoever at your local shop will probably be hip to the entire set up. Don’t ever be intimidated into NOT asking questions of these people, I’ve learned a lot from them. Ben, Spend some money on a good beginner fly fishing book. Try to find a copy of Dave Hughes "Fly Fishing Basics" for $12.95 (US$) – I happen to think it’s quite good. ISBN 0-8117-2439-5. Also, you don’t attach your fly line to the reel, you attach it to backing line which is attached to the reel. Backing goes around the reel spindle twice and is tied with a simple overhand knot and a second overhand knot at the end of the tag end. Pull this tight and the tag end overhand knot will catch in the first overhand knot that is tied around the backing line. Hard to write – easy to tie. NOTE: make sure you wrap the line onto the reel in the correct direction too. Adjust the drag pawls too. Use a nail-knot at the backing line /fly line point. If you are using a wt. forward fly line – make sure the correct end is attached to the backing material.Should be okay if left on the original spool until attaching it to the backing. (A DT line is double-ended so no mistake possible) Use a braided loop on the end of your fly line and form a loop in the end of your leader(s). A loop-to-loop connection allows leader change out quickly. Add some extra tippet material to the "fly" end of your leader and save buying lot’s of expensive leaders. Fishing in North Georgia
Question:
About a month ago I asked for info about fishing in N. Georgia. The response was very good and I thank everyone. Well, we just got back from the trip to Ga., and I have to tell ya, if I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it. I discovered the Chatooga River, infamous for being the river where "Deliverence" was filmed. What an absolutely beautiful piece of water! I thought I was back in New England. Fast, cold (61), free stone, clear trout water. There was a hatch of very small caddis, but didn’t see too many rises. In NE I use a cased caddis fly called the Strawman; just spun deer hair trimmed short. Gink it up so it floats. Ga trout like it too. Only had two days on the Chatooga, but managed a couple of nice browns (10-14 in) down-stream from the Rt 76 bridge. Caught a few small rainbows downstream and upstream from the Rt 28 bridge. Great river. I also tried the Chatahootchi ( The Hootch) below Buford Dam. Super cold – like 53; no hatches. But lotsa fog! Dragged a nymph or two, and lobbed a few streamers, but got zilch. The rocks on this river are the slimiest, most slippery I’ve ever encountered! I checked out the Hootch above the lake (iat next trip. Also, I’d like to try the Chatooga just below the NC border. Anyone know how to get there? The roads in Georgia are also terrific, and gas was $1.07 a gallon (it’s $1.50 here in Mass)! Georgia’s not NH or Maine, but it’s great! Good drifts, Dave LaCourse

You don’t even want to ask what that slick stuff is! Also, I’d like to try the Chatooga just below the NC border. Anyone know how to get there?
Go east from the river on Hwy 28 . Hwy 107 will enter from the left. Take 107 north until you pass the state park on the right. Start looking for the sign on the left for Burrells Ford road. It’s a couple of miles down this road to the river. When you get to the river the NC state line is about 4-4 1/2 miles upstream. This part of the river is mainly brown trout water and is not stocked. A good trail goes upstream on the east (South Carolina) side of the river. You can fish on the South Carolina side of the river with a Georgia license, just don’t go up any feeder streams. As an alternate go west from the river on hwy 28. Take the first gravel road to the right. That will bring you in to the opposite side of Burrells Ford. The roads in Georgia are also terrific, and gas was $1.07 a gallon (it’s $1.50 here in Mass)! Georgia’s not NH or Maine, but it’s great!
We don’t tax gas heavy but did you check the price of beer and cigs? Got to make those sinners pay!
See ya, John Johnson Atlanta, GA

The Orvis Edition
Question:
Does it have the same warranty as the rods? Just think of it,a 25 year warranty; drive the damn thing into a tree–get a NEW one!!!Get hit by a bus–get a NEW one!! Break your Orvis Rod, closing your Orvis Edition door–get a NEW rod and Jeep!!! I can’t understand where you see this becoming a problem. It’s not like Ralph Lauren is coming out with a POLO line of yuppie flyfishing clothes, with $225.+ mock flyfishing vests made in Shri Lanka(spelled wrong:you know the place where Orvis has their flies tied.); which someone got 80 cents to make with $4.00 worth of material, and are going to sell these at OUR finer stores for mear profit! Personally, I’d like to see ALOT of people buy them. Picture this, 25 Orvis Edition Jeeps in the parking lot.25 paranoid new Orvis Edition owners, fishing as close to the parking lot, as possible; to watch their $25,00 plus investments. Me, I’ll be 100 yards up stream–FISHING BY MYSELF!!!!!
Response:
OK, so maybe I’m a little bit biased because my vest is an Orvis, a gift a couple years back, but if there’s one thing ALMOST as annoying as a bunch of yuppies brand name-dropping on the stream bank, it’s a bunch of anti-yuppies on the opposite bank throwing rocks at them. People object to the conspicuous consumption, brand name set because this group of people seem to judge personal worth by what company made their clothing, gear, car, etc. OK, no problems there with me; I hate that stuff, too. But aren’t we doing the same thing when we start to feel that anyone who purchases anything from Orvis falls into the dreaded Y-word category? Now WE are the ones who are judging personal worth based on a label. We have thus become the anti-snob, which is the same thing in my book. IMHO Orvis sells some worthwhile gear, and some of it is reasonably priced for the quality you get, like the Battenkill disk reels and their super-strong leader material (who really makes that stuff, anyway…anyone know?). Some of the stuff is overpriced, but a savvy angler can pick and choose…it just means more catalogs to go through during the loooong winter, which to me sounds like a good way to spend my time ;) Happy Winter Solistice (the days will be getting longer soon, only 3.5 months until opening day…) Paul DiConza NY Capital District Angler
