Any Dick or Willie will do? Running & ducking, Herman
Response:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I had been getting spammed with about 65-75 junk emails per day. I tried to unsubscribe from their lists but that seemed to only waste my time and increase the amount of spam. So this week I have been using the program called "MailWasher." Download it from CNET or mailwasher.net. It is free, you can check the headers on your email server before downloading it, and you can mark emails to be bounced back to the sender. Clicking the Bounce box on a message sends a fake "address not found" message to the address that the message originated from. This reduces the possibility of more spam e-mail coming from this address. I am down to about 10-15 spams per day.
Thanks, Dave. I downloaded this and have it in place. Remarkably easy to install and use. Almost as soon as I was done, I received mail from a spammer. Tim c’mon, spam me NOW sukkas

We have a snall US and Canadian contingent going down there for the race. Training has been quite interesting for me over the winter months (I don’t know if I can put myself up to this again!). I think there is one person in our contingent who might bring the flyfishing gear. As for me, I don’t know if flyfishing is up my alley…bungee jumping is more like it! See you down there.

I’m not a flyfisherman, so take this with a grain of salt. I’m pretty certain that you can hire all the gear form the fishing guides/boatmen at Taupo. Seems crazy to lug even more gear across the world! Fishing in the Allagash (Maine)
Question:
I’m going to be canoeing in the Allagash this summer (late July/August). Any thoughts in this group on what the fishing up there is like? I’ve heard it’s not very good. Should I even bother? What should/shouldn’t I take. Obviously I need to minimize the gear I will be taking. John
Response:
Hi John, I am Maine Guide and have did the Allagash many times. There certain times of the year when you can catch all the brook trout you want, then there are times you wish you had stayed home. Usually June and the early part of July are the best. If you fly fish bring a Wordens Worry, if you don’t fly fish dig your worms and grubs along the bank. Then there are those excellent trout p[onds all along the way. Good luck!!!! Gene – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m going to be canoeing in the Allagash this summer (late July/August). New Mexico camping
Question:
Obviously you haven’t been to Elephant Butte. Mind you, the lake’s there as advertised. The camping sites are mostly very primitive, according to my son who has camped there. No trees or other shade. EB might be an OK area if one were staying in a motel in T or C, in an RV park, or on a houseboat, but it’s certainly not a good place to camp in a tent.
I have to agree with you, Pat. Also, if he believes EB to be a huge lake, he has really been deprived. By the way, I lived in TorC for several years and my son still lives there. Paul in Portland OR

LOL!! Jet skiers and water skiers? Sure, that may be ideal for fishermen who want to cast corn for carp and watch barely dressed women water ski, but most fly fishermen I know would prefer a tent and 5 miles of uncrowded river to fish.——Muskie – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Why? Your way of camping (which must be in disagreement with at least one opportunity above) is the only way? Seems bigoted to me …
Response:
Bigoted or enlightened? Most fly fishermen only like big crowds while at the flyfishing shows. I have enough trouble dealing with the "aluminum hatch" (canoes); can you imagine trying to be nice to jet ski riders? Give me a quiet spot, where the only "improvements" are water pumps and maybe a flush toilet.

Chris, you will have a long walk from the ferryto a fly shop, when you get to town look up robinsons sporting goods, if you go up to cowichan or naniamo, cambell river there are more and better shops to look around. : looking for info on fly shops in victoria, bc. would appreciate info : including name of shop and hopefully a phone #. would prefer a shop : within walking distance from the ferry terminal, even if it’s a long walk. Depends on which ferry terminal. The ones from the US side (believe they come from Port Angeles, Anacortes, perhaps both) dock fairly close to downtown. However, most ferry traffic arrives from the Canadian side, leaving the mainland at Tsawassen (near the border, and about an hour south of Vancouver). These ferries dock at Swartz Bay, which is a good 20 miles east of downtown Victoria. However, should you choose to walk ;-^), the first town (about 3 miles) is Sydney, and there are three or four "fishing" shops there. Most are saltwater-oriented (get yer bait herring here!) but all have a few flies and tying supplies. Trail, BC voice: (250) 368-9315 Canada V1R 2V7 data: (250) 368-9341

Fly Rod & Reel Internet article
Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Overall, the article covers quite a bit and seems to be well researched although there was no mention of *my* baby, the flytying newsgroup. snip We still love you John. TimW The reference to Ted Williams was my selection for "who would you like to spend a day fishing with" — hardly a thread but I suppose they were trolling for references to their magazine. Now that I think of it, there aren’t many magazine references in ROFF or ROFFT. I certainly spend a lot more time these days fishing, tying and surfing the net and a lot less time reading magazines and watching TV. I cancelled FR&R last year and still haven’t read the September Fly Fisherman, let alone the just received December issue (don’t want to ruin the suspense by reading the November election results).
Me too. The glossy magazines interest me little anymore. There has to be something really worthwhile in an issue to buy one. These newsgroups are much, much better. They are reader driven and not writer driven, in general. In other words, ask and ye shall receive. That is REAL value. I’d just as soon not see the ng’s and the magazines cross paths, myself. TimW

I still get value from the two magazines I get, FF in Salt Waters and Saltwater FF, though it certainly is different from what we have here ! I think SWFF is still new enough in printed word that the zines haven’t become too repetitive, although I think there is definitely a danger of this happening in the future. If I digress to the whole George Resign stuff, and I hate to do so, it seems to me that the magazine format would have been much better for him, having the ‘writer driven’ nature that Tim alludes to. The glossies are great places for established, experienced fishermen to convey information that the reader can take or leave. Which of course means the ngs are much more fun ! jc

For those that haven’t seen it, the most recent issue of Fly Rod & Reel contains a seven page article on Flyfishing and the Internet. I did a brief scan of the article and it primarily talks about various web sites and includes a pretty extensive list of sites and describes some of the bigger sites such as Virtual Fly Shop, and several others. There is also a short section on "mailing lists and non-profit sites" (hint to commercial advertisers in r.o.f.f.) which includes a couple of short references to this newsgroup. Here’s how they described us… "Sometimes outrageous and always interesting, the newsgroup is worth a regular stop. The last time I checked there were threads on the influx of newcomers to Montan (don’t leave your California-plated car alone at night), on women fly fishers and on the work of FR&R conservation editor Ted Williams [ does anyone remember this last thread? - john]. Sounds good so far, but you should pay some attention to your leader. A standard tippet isn’t real effective when dealing with pike teeth. You should pick up some 30 lb. test steel line and cut off a piece about 1 ft. in length. For a sinking leader, use 30 lb. test lead core line about 10" long (do not use much more!) remove about 2" of the core from each end. Tie a uni-knot, same as attaching your tippet to regular fly line with the outer shell of the lead core line around the steel line, and then, tie a second uni-knot with the steel line around the lead core. Pull the two knots together and you have your leader. Tie the other end of the lead core line shell to the fly line with another uni-knot and tie the fly to the other end of the steel line. By the way, if you use a long piece of lead core line and manage to back-cast the line into your head (who hasn’t done this with a regular monofilament tippet), you will see Elvis or other such sites long after you come to. Good luck…fly fishing pike is really fun. — Yukon College, Academic Studies/Professional Studies Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada Telephone (403) 668-8809

Wind River trout questions
Question:

Response:
Hi. I am new to fishing but just purchased a rod and spin outfit to take on a backpacking/rock climbing trip to the Big Sandy area in the southern Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. The lakes where we’ll be (Clear Lake and Deep Lake near Mt. Haystack, most likely) are supposedly full of brook trout, and we hope to catch some for a couple of nice dinners (I’ll get my partner to pack in the wine by marking it "fuel", I suppose!). I have been told that any fly resembling a mosquito (Irresistible Adams was suggested as a first choice, as well as Wooly Worms and Wooly Buggers) would work well, though I don’t know what hook size would be appropriate. I really don’t know mcuh about catching a fish. Some of the questions I have are: Is this information in a FAQ I haven’t found? Which would work best? How does one use a spin outfit to cast with flies? Can I just put on a bubble or a piece of shot and cast like that? Would I be better off just using a small spinner or jig? The last few days here in New Haven, Connecticut have been beautiful. We spent yesterday rock climbing at the Shawangunks, New York. I hope the days are fine in your neck of the woods! Thanks for any help. Please email any responses since I don’t get to check newsgroups too often. Much obliged, Rene’ Renteria
