White River Fly fishing
Question:
My wife and I are looking to spend that last three weeks in Nov on the White River fly fishing. We would prefer a cabin on the river and would posibly like a guide or two while there. Does anyone have a suggestion of lodging and guide? — Stay connected, Carl D. Sgro
Response:
Carl – I would Highly recommend the Fulton’s lodge – Dale and Rona have a nice situation going – I have stayed there many times and they are the hosts for SRG(Southern Rodmakers Gathering) – here is a link with their info – http://www.mtnhome.net/fultons/ Wayne

I have stayed at Dale Fulton’s place too and will be back again. He also owns a nice fly shop there in MT Home, called Blue Ribbon. You will need to call ahead though as it is a popular place. Well situated for both the White and the N.Fork River nearby (when the generators hose up the water and you’re without in the boat dept.) If you get the chance make a date to hit the Rainbow Lodge on the Little Red too. Nice large trout and good access. K

Question:
Monday we finally got enough of a break in the wind to allow us to get way out in the sound. Found some pretty white sand shorelines and poled along them. Lo and behold there were nice sized schools of redfish cruising along in 8 inches of crystal clear water with a light colored bottom. Perfect. We threw tan/white clousers and merkins at them (size 2). Caught them up to 26 inches. Each strike a picture perfect sight fishing shot. Just like bonefishing in the Bahamas. Question:
Well that’s not terribly expensive – I would recommend the 4 pc rod over the 2 pc. The higher resale valve will make up for the additional cost and it’s so much easier if you get a chance to do some traveling. The casting action on the 4 pc VPS is virtually the same on the 2 and 4 pc. The DS series is considerably slower action that the RPL / VPS series – I have cast both. Also the resale valve is considerably lower percent wise. Most everyone I know that purchased a DS outgrow it within a year or so. FYI: I normally fish RPLX rods (8wt & up) , to me the RPL/VPS is slower, but still very castable and able to shoot line, where the DS is too slow and unable to shoot line.
I’m not sure about the 5, seems light if you do much smallmouth fishing so my 2 bits: go for a 6. On the VSP – I have a 690-4 RPL – I was told that the VSP is the exact same rod by sage. It’s a nice rod, and can cast a pretty good sized popper or streamer. Most of my buddies that have cast it like it also. What is the cost of the VPS combo?
They want a little over $400 for a combo. They give you a nice reel setup with backing and WF-F fly line, usually higher quality. But then for the same action I was checking into the DS series rods, looks line the same rod action of med-fast, but at about $290 for the combo. I am leaning towards the Sage more and more. One good thing (if you need the money), I start working 7 days a week in two weeks, so after I work two or three of them, I’ll have the money to buy either one if I want and still be able to feed the family. –Randy

Okay, I’m thinking about a new rod. I stopped at my local shop today and checked out a few rods. I’ve determined after talking with the guy there, I want a 5 weight for the different fishing I do, mainly smallmouth and trout. I have narrowed down to the following: a Sage DSL series , a Scott (whatever series), a step up to a Sage VSP series, or going to a different shop and getting a Orvis Silver label series rod. I am not in a hurry since I will only start working 7 days a week in a few weeks (I’ll have the money after one or two weeks of this). I am leaning towards the Sage VSP Combo right now, but this can change. I will also be casting all of these rods before I make my finial decision, but I’d like input on these rods. –Randy

Sage has a pretty hefty markup on their rods, IMO. But, it seems to me the VSP is one of the best "values" (this term might be hotly debated by Mike Connor
Their rep was telling me how just a few years ago it was a top-of-the-line rod (used to be the RPL I think?) Technology marches on and the price goes down. Is it all of a sudden not such a good rod? Of course not. I preferred that rod’s action over the SP, but that’s just personal preference, and reasonable as far as Sage goes. BTW, if you’re deciding on finials, go with something in iron rather than wood – more gothic looking

As is often the case, Wayne is correct here, Randy. Golf is a game best learned before the teens, abandoned in one’s early twenties as a sport for old farts. When one achieves the latter status, one can resume the sport. This oncoming of old fart status can, however, occur at various ages, thus it is that some never give the game up at all. all in good fun, Tom Littleton

I have never even bothered to research it because the fishing outside the gate is extraordinary. You can’t get into the park from the east without driving through the Blackfeet reservation, upon which is some of the very best fishing in the lower 48. There are so many high quality lakes and streams on the reservation that it would take years to explore them all. John.

If I only had one more day….
Question:
If I only had one more day I could fish, I think I would want it to be the day I had Wednesday. I hadn’t been out for about 5 weeks. Too busy at work. This coming from the guy who’s motto is "The best time to go fishing is when you are too busy to go". I had to attend too many meetings, give too many talks, and write too many grants over the past little while. Finally, I had finished everything, and called my fishing buddy to go. I left the house Wednesday morning. It is about an hour’s drive to my friend’s place. I live in Lethbridge, Alberta, he lives in the Crowsnest Pass. This is nice drive, and gives me a lot of time for some quiet thoughts. You pass over the treeless prairie, watching the Rocky mountains in front of you getting closer, until finally, you are surrounded by them. I meet my buddy, and since it is real windy in Alberta, we decide to make the short drive across the divide into BC to go for cutthroats. When we hit the river, it is sunny, with a light breeze. I began nymphing at the tail of a deep, fast run. The takes are real subtle, you can barely see the indicator move when the fish is on. It doesn’t matter, because I land my first fish about 10 – 15 minutes after I began, and they just seem to keep coming steadily. I work my way to the head of the run, walk back to the tail, and sit down and watch my friend across the river. It is getting kind of windy over here now, but by some luck, the wind is at my back. I decided to try some dry flies. This is October 20, in Western Canada, but what the heck. I put on a huge size 10 Chernobyl Ant, because they are supposed to work okay on the fish in this river, and I start working my way back up the same run. Not two casts later, I see a large cutt come slowly from the bottom to the fly, and miss. I cast over the same spot, and he comes again, and slowly sucks the fly in. I set the hook, and land another one. This goes on for a while, probably about a half hour to an hour. These big cutts kept appearing from nowhere it seems, and kept taking the fly, almost in slow motion. I would see a large fish, he would pause, then take the fly, and I would set the hook. The fish are larger than the ones I was catching using the nymphs. These fish are slabs, and they are beautiful. My friend shows up. I ask him if he wants to fish this run for a while, he tells me no, he is heading farther upstream. I’ll meet him there in a while. Right after he leaves, I notice there a lot of these big cutts rising all over the run. Fins and snouts everywhere. They don’t seem to care too much about the big dry fly anymore, so I tie on a finer tippet and a size 18 comparadun, because it looks like we are either having a midge or a blue-winged olive hatch. I can’t see any bugs, just these rising fish. I cast the comparadun, and watch it drift. The water is fast, and accuracy doesn’t matter here. Just put the fly on the current, and a fish will come up for it. This keeps going on, just like before, only now I am catching them on a size 18 instead of a size 10. I look upstream, and I can’t see my friend anymore. I check my watch, and time has evaporated. I head upstream, and see him fishing a run. I cross the river, and sit on the bank behind him, watching him. We decide to leave at 4:30, and it now just a little after 4. He tells me some cutts are rising in a little run upstream, and probably feeding on small flies. He had got a few, so I went up to look. It was more of the same, I cast a small dry, watch it drift, see a little swirl and bulge in the water, set the hook, and a fish is on. I lose the compardun when the tippet breaks, the only fly I lose all day. I figure what the hell, let’s see how they like a small red foam ant. They do. My friend shows up at the side of the river upstream from me, and tells me he can see a fish rising. I can’t see it, but after a few casts, finally figure out where the little critter is likely to be. I drift the red foam ant over him, there’s the swirl and bulge, and I have my last fish for the day. We left right after that. The wind had died down, the walk back was pleasant. The leaves were yellow and coming off the trees. Winter is on its way, and many of the streams will be closed soon. I will be out again this Wednesday, with a different fishing buddy, and a different stream. I don’t expect to have the same magical kind of day, but I really don’t care. It will be a different magic, but magic all the same. Tim Lysyk

Mu, Definitely visit my old stomping grounds then… The Kananaskis Lakes area are wonderful for that! I have had friends tell me of streams in Banff Natl. Park but I can’ recall now. When I lived in Alberta I got sick of catching trout. Matter of fact that was all we seemed to catch for the most part. I love the "trash fish" from this area. I am still rabid about catching bass and bluegills on my fly rod. Next I am going for the salt! Who hoo! — Michael Era

I often fish droppers when lake fishing or nymphing on rivers and I wonder what the correct distance between the two flies should be. Also, should the larger fly go on the point or as the dropper? Where should split shot go, between the two flies or above the dropper? I imagine that these variables may depend upon which flies I am using and the conditions. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.
Response:
Larger, heavier, fy on point. Dropper 2-3 ft. back tied on w/ similar tippet. Shot behind point fly if using shot. Big point fly should make shot unnecessary.

I Have been using a larger beadhead as the point fly for the added weight and that seems to work good. Jack
Response:
A number of people around Central Oregon are tying a stonefly or beadhead on 3X or 4X tippet, then adding around 18" of 5X and putting either a PT, small hare’s ear, or a caddis pupa BEHIND the large fly, tying the tippet to the bend of the heavier hook. I have much better luck with this for most situations.

I have used a larger more colorful fly as an attracter for the lead fly and I have also used a popper as a strike indicarer for a lead fly. They both seem to work good depending on dept and what you are fishing for. With both methods I have caught fish on both flys the same cast. Tom
