Paul, I would check out the site run by a decent guy named Matt. He lives not too far away in Rome I believe. He is familiar with the Utica/Rome areas (about an hour away) and he can turn you on to some other spots in your area. If you head up 87, you will find all sorts of small creeks and streams. They used to be awesome for brookies, but I haven’t fished there in years. His site is: http://www.centralnewyorker.com/CNYflyfisherman.htm Give him a try.
Hi, I have been an avid fisher person for many years. Have recently taken up fly fishing – after moving to the Albany New York area. Any tips for the area, fishing spots (fly fishing or otherwise) fishing partners (I’ll buy the beer or lunch) haven’t made any new friends here yet. would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance Paul P

Do make the trip up to the Adirondacks – Saranac, Ausable area – if you get the chance. I’d love to head up there with ya, but it’s not in the cards this year

Funny, I just left after 10 years. Depending where you live, there are a host of nearby opportunities. My personal favorite was either the Mohawk or the Junction of the Hudson and Hoosac for smallies on the fly. The Mohawk has lots of areas to fish- easily accessible are all the locks (that goes for the Hudson, too). From shore good areas are either end of the Crescent Bridge, the flight locks, Lock 7 in Niskayuna and the other side of Lock 7 accessible from Ferry Rd nature path in Clifton Park, just west of Vischer’s Ferry Road. For the jct of the Hoosac and Hudson get to Stillwater and go across the bridge over the Hudson, turn right into the road for the Lock Park. Park in the lot and take the footpath south from the parking area to the Hoosac. I mostly used white grub bodies and spinners on the Hoosac. It’s very interesting place with a lot of fish but water levels change, sometimes dramatically, dependent upon releases through the dam at Schagticoke, upriver. It is wild in Summer when water levels are down and fish congregate in the narrow rushing channels cut through the rock. Believe me the Albany are is fantastic for water to fish. Start asking around here or local tackle shops. Add the Adirondacks and Vermont to all the water in the Albany area and you are in paradise. I loved it so much I bought the lifetime license from NY state which is good even if you are no longer a NY resident. Tight lines and watch your footing! Cow

I was out on the river last night, up at the dam. nothing there yet, give it a week and maybe!! Vern

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m sure that you’re aware that there is a heck of a lot of stream fishing in the area. But sometime between now and mid-May or so is supposed to be a good time to fish for shad and striped bass. You may want to look into shore access at Green Island, below the dam at Troy. I can’t give you any first-hand information: I was in the area last year and researched it a bit, but then wasn’t able to get to it.

Well, your original post was talking smack, and I’m talking smack back. It’s a talk-back smack attack, Jack. It sounded like kind of a silly post considering that you were basically doing what you accused others of – "tossing insults from behind your nice safe computer keyboard." Therefore I didn’t take you seriously, and my reply wasn’t serious either. On the other hand, if you were serious, then come on over and Jeff Miller and I will give you at least 5 seconds of ass whuppin’ before we keel over and regretfully submit to your will. Hey, picture this: you work as an electrician and have been a fairly rugged sort most of your life, and one day on the job a masons-helper comes up to ya and says, "A fella told me you was queer, is it true?" So you say, "Yeah, it’s true, I’m gay. So what?" And he says, "No, really, are you queer?" And I say, (oops) and you say, "Yes it’s true! You wanna go out or somethin’?" Well, he just walks off scrathin’ his head, and you walk off knowin’ every swingin’ dick on the job is soon to believe you are gay. And I say, FUCK’EM IF THEY CAN’T TAKE A JOKE!
I hear you… I wouldn’t take that kind of crap face to face either, but you have to realize that those who are out there making all the spineless threats are usually the kind of people who feel powerless in all other areas of their lives.. and when they have the opportunity to act without fear of physical retribution, they suddenly feel brave. Go figure. I think you’re better off with the non response… or at least a stab at humor. Don’t let the weasels get to you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My biggest problem in this is that I wouldn’t take this crap from anyone face to face and would probably be even more direct in person. Hence, my reluctance to walk away. However, given the obvious fact that some will never let go I have no other way of dealing with these things than by non response. I’m not good at it, I’ll be the first to admit, and I’ve tried and failed before, but I’m game to give it another go.

No. I’d like to see it though. That has become one hot light tackle fishery. Since most people don’t like the false albacore, it is also a catch and release fishery, which will certainly help sustain the stocks as the popularity increases.
I paid a fair price to the dealer in my area that was most helpful. Amazingly, I was able to negotiate a deal without knowing dealer invoice, blue book value, and wholesale cost. If you are serious about prices, I suggest calling some dealers in your area for some quotes. Tell me what they are quoting, and I will give you my opinion on that price. Scout makes boats up to 20′ in center console, dual console, side console, and flats style. They are at www.scoutboats.com.
Good guess, Skipper. I got a dual axle trailer, and the boat is closer to 20′ than 19′ (19′ 10" LOA). Jeff Sorry, but email address disguised due to unscrupulous spammers. Please respond in Usenet.

Congrats indeed, Jeff! It always seems that the first year or two, when you’re busy turning the boat into what you want it to be, are the most enjoyable. We just switched and there’s all the usual redoing to change the obviously stupid decisions the manufacturer and previous owners made to the One True Path of Righteousness (and humility???) Enjoy!

If you join IGFA (they have a web site where you can do this) they’ll send you a copy of the latest World Records as part of the membership deal. This lists all the rules for various forms of tackle, including fly fishing. I think you can join for around $30. I also saw the IGFA World Records manual for sale for $12.95 from a catalog recently. Hope this helps.

Get your information from IGFA 300 Gulf Stream Way Dania Beach, FL 33004 Phone: 954-922-4212 WEBSITE: www.igfa.org This is the new site of the beautiful World Fishing Center of the IGFA. The museum was open to the public on Dec. 19, 1998. If you are able to visit the museum it will be a great experiance. There lots of hands on exhibits including those for tots through adults. There are demonstrations of fly tying, fly casting, cast netting, knot tying as well as thousands of books and videos in the library. Their gift shop carries hundreds of great items for gifts or personal use. In the main hall ,suspended from the ceiling are hanging mounts of all the world records of all species of the world ,from the smallest Bluegill to the Great White Shark. I am a volunteer at the center and I must say how excited I am about it. There is something new to see every time I walk in. I’ve rattled on enough. Come see us. Buck

Someone told me that Hopkington res. has lanlocked salmon. Is this true? Gary

Response:

my opinion steve would be to fish these ponds when ever the sun is at its lowest point either in morning till 10 or in the eve till dark.for those ponds that contain brwns fish the shallows with any type of black stramer you have the black against a nite sky works well with them i could go into great detail but i just started typing and its driving crazy i think ill go to the pnd and relax byefor now

Response:

Not true. The state dumps in some of the spawned out Atlantic salmon brood stock from the Connecticuit/Merrimack salmon restoration program though. Both the Wachusett and Quabbin have landlock populations and there is a good run on Wachusett tribs in the fall but it gets hammered by every sort of "fisherman" one could imagine and a few that can’t be believed. Even so, I always give it a try and have even landed two! Doug

Response:

Someone told me that Hopkington res. has lanlocked salmon. Is this true? Gary

Some of the deeper res. are occasionally stocked with broodstock salmon (i.e. old salmon that are producing good eggs for the stocking program anymore.) I believe Hopkinton and Ashland are, and I know Middle Cochituate is. You can call 1-800-ask-fish and follow the voice menu to find out exactly which lakes were stocked this spring with broodstock salmon. Steve

ribbon waters of PA. Roger, Though new to fly fishing, I found the Tulpehocken Creek special regulation area is as fine a blue ribbon fishery as any in Pennsylvania. I have spoken to a few fisherman and tackle shops locally and they all agree. The only problem is these fish are some of the most finicky in the state, but there is one advantage here, if you’re married and you want to bring the mate, Vanity Fair outlets are real close by. — Randy Junk e-mail, solicitation, sales, products and services gladly accepted at $500.00 per mailing and billed directly to your ISP.

Roger; I think that someone in Montana, California, or New York has "rights" on the term "Blue Ribbon". I’m not sure about "World Class". That may need international copyrights. Anyway, yeah, the Tulley has fish, but may not after this summer. I think it’s waters got too warm. I’ll give you a list of some of the best, established waters in the Keystone state, and then you ought to get a copy of the Mid Atlantic Flyfishers Guide. You can contact flyshops that monitor the respective waters. Fishing Creek in Lamar Spring Creek: Between State College and Bellefonte. West Branch of the Delaware below the Cannonsville Res. Yellow Breeches, Carlisle (sp?) Little Lehigh, and most other Lehigh Valley streams, Allentown Falling Spring, Chambersburg Penns’ Creek, Centre County Lackawaxen (I cannot remember how to spell this) Spruce Creek (mostly private, but arrangements can be made), Tyrone, There are lots of others, but these are some of the higher profile streams, and for good reason. I like other streams in the N.W. part of the state, but the good ones often get too hot in the summer and kill all of the stocked fish. You will want a guide for Penns Creek. On the other streams, you can do well without a guide, but you will need advice. These streams are well fished almost all year ’round by some very good anglers who know the water well. You will be fishing for (mostly) seasoned, experienced fish. Jason Beary

Roger: WHERE in PA? PA has more running water than any state except Alaska. Be specific about location and I can help. The Breeches Penns Creek Fishing Creek White Deer Loyalsok Lehigh Stony Creek Plus MANY others are great!
