Response:

Its already started. My wife asked me what kind of fly fishing stuff I wanted for Christmas. I had just received a Hunter’s Angling fly tying catalogue and marked it up, flagged the pages, and gave it to her for shopping. Earlier this week she came in with the catalogue in hand, said "Merry Christmas! Order everything you marked!" I shot off the order and the box arrived yesterday. My fly tying bench is overloaded with goodies. Most of this batch was for saltwater flys with a few tools thrown in. At the January fly fishing show in College Park I get to spend my other Christmas present, a SIGNIFICANT contribution to my fly fishing war chest! let’s see……wading boots, Teton reel for my Connor rod, hackle, gotta buy hackle, don’t need hackle (got nearly 3 dozen necks and saddles, but what the hey, you can’t have too many) so I’ll buy some hooks, maybe a full-dressed salmon fly or two to hang on the wall, Teeny line for my new Teton reel…..gotta be something else, so far I have cash left over from my shopping list. Maybe I’d better save some for Penns. I’m booked with Jonas at Feathered Hook for the nights of May 16 – 20. Imagine having to pass through a fly shop EVERY day BEFORE BREAKFAST! arrrrggghhhh! Better leave all my credit cards at home and just take the leftover Christmas funds. Come to thnk of it, it will be AFTER the fly fishing show, list or no list, there won’t be anything left! — Wayne (commercial….too damn commercial…unless its fly fishing stuff) To Fish is Human…To Release Divine!

I tried the same thing with Cabelas’ fly fishing catalog. When I got done, just about all the pages were dog-eared. After the laughter subsided I was told to make a list, so I went to cabelas.com and made a 3-page wish list. This sport is tough – so much gear, so little $$. — TL, Tim

Cyli, you must learn something which guys pass on to each other early on in the locker room conversations. NEVER…repeat NEVER give up how much you really got, the fact you got anything at all, where you might spend it, or what you bought with it! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!! You will also get VERY creative about explaining how certain new gear turns up. Keep in mind, these are not lies; just things we tell the opposite sex to keep them from worrying about things which they should never have to be concerned with in the first place. — Wayne (maybe I’ll make a video about this and market it through Neiman Markus) To Fish is Human…To Release Divine!

The Prestige. But its only a good deal with the 3 Forks package. You can find cheaper Okumas elsewhere. And, it’s a good "bang for the buck" reel. But, the Prestige included with the 3 wt. Three Forks is a bit large for this rod, IMO. I think it’s for 5/6 wt. line. One of the smaller Okuma’s would be a better fit on the 3 wt. Snoop

True enough Snoop…both my 3 and 5 wt Three Forks sport an Okuma Sierra 3/4 and a nice rig it is. Frank(a very tired road hog) Church …..who just completed a 3300 mile trip to El Paso, Tx. and only had 300 miles of sunshine. The rest rain/drizzle/fog/snow/hail and who watched a tornado funnel form and disappear 3 times right before my very eyes. (wait a minute, was this a TR?)

The one I bought for my St. Croix three weight is labeled "4/5", but it’s the smallest reel I own by far. Pretty ideal for the three weight in my estimation. As a matter of fact, even with a 3 WF there is little room for backing. I’m not sure I could get a double tapered line on it even without any backing. Wolfgang

Response:

I use a Galvan 3wt reel on my P.O.S. Three Forks. It’s a lovely reel — a light anodized metallic color, just the right size, with a sensitive drag and a decent amount of backing — as though I’ll ever need it. At first I felt like an idiot because the reel (an impulse purchase) costs maybe four or five times what rod costs, even when the rod was bought as a "combo." I use a 3 wt WF Sage Performance line with that rod. The LINE costs more than the rod, even when bought as a "combo." It matches the rod "perfectly" to my satisfaction. BTW, I recently got my repaired workhorse 5wt Sage SP back from the factory, after breaking it horribly and sickeningly at the HF Clave. I took it out to the Big Wood River a few days ago, getting about two hours of fishing in during a day of frantic errand running in Ketchum and Hailey. It was a good outing, catching a few nice rainbows on dries during the tail end of a baetis hatch. The rod, however, felt like a surf rod compared to the Three Forks I’ve been using in its absence.

Response:

Proceed with caution. Your four weight and 3 weight might breed, producing a 3.5 weight. If this happens, there would be no hope of ever avoiding a gear-whore label.

It’s not so much the lable itself that I mind, but at these prices I find (at this late and rather sensitive stage of life) that I am a CHEAP whore. Scott (recovering this morning from a second lab flood )

Thanks for the report, Bill. I really had intended to fish with my Three Forks combo in NC last week but found it impossible to tear myself away from the rod Joel built for me on a St. Croix Legend Ultra blank back in the spring.

I can fully understand that! Since I bought the Three Forks back in July (for my daughter, I swear!), I haven’t used my 5 weight rig much. Opportunities will be limited for me for the next few months, but maybe I’ll get lucky and manage at least a bluegilling trip before the ice sets in.

For what it’s worth, Mike, I did actually test cast the rod on my lawn and found that it works as well as any other. Bearing in mind that the reel seat will probably have to be replaced, as has so often been noted, I still think that the package is a steal for 60 bucks. I only wish that I had investigated Cabelas site a little more carefully and gotten the Okuma reel for an additional ten dollars rather than the cheap graphite one. I use the graphite reel to run the line off the other reel (4 hose clamps on a piece of broom stick.) — John Popp in Sanford Fl.

I had the 3-3-3 (Three Forks, three piece, three weight) with me in Colorado this past weekend, and really enjoyed fishing with it. I’ll try to stave off hyperbole this time, though. Wolfgang, you missed one fine $10 reel. I looked at the Okuma version at a fly shop today, and it’s the exact same reel. The salesman was trying to convince me that 30% off a $435 Ross reel was a bargain, but being the bottom feeder that I am… One interesting data point: I fished with my friend Dennis on Monday. He had a Cortland package set up and was doing miserably with it. He just couldn’t seem to get a cast out right. Handed him the 3-3-3 and he did much better. Of course, Willi’d given him some pointers in the meantime, so maybe my data is skewed. Just seems like a nice rod to cast, beginner or otherwise. Bill – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – So Wolfie did ya like the rod ??? Nice gear whore report makes me wanta send for one right now. fished with it yet, did I? :) For what it’s worth, Mike, I did actually test cast the rod on my lawn and found that it works as well as any other.
Response:

As some of you will recall, I recently purchased a Cabelas Three Forks Combo which included a seven and a half foot 3 piece 3 weight rod, a cheap graphite click drag reel, a weight forward 3 wt. floating line of unknown manufacture, backing of unknown manufacture, material, and weight (it’s white), rod sock, a knotless tapered leader, and a getting started in fly fishing video, for the price of about 60 bucks (US) including shipping. The purchase was prompted by a perceived need to have a backup in the event of a catastrophic failure of my primary three weight rig during the recently concluded first ever ROFFian Appalachian backpacking anti-subclave, and the selection was based on several years worth of recommendations from a wide range of ROFFians (most of whom I have never met but have nevertheless inexplicably learned to trust……don’t ask me, maybe it’s the aneurysm) who have, for the most part, spoken glowingly of it. I have not yet viewed the video and will thus refrain from further comment on it. After a week in the Smoky Mountains of extreme western North Carolina, fishing in very demanding circumstances (those familiar with the region are all too well aware of the rigorous demands made on both fly fisher and gear) I am prepared to say that despite some initial misgivings engendered by the rather shoddy appearance of the rod’s components (the entire reel seat assembly fails to inspire confidence), I am pleased to say without qualification that the entire outfit performed every task I demanded of it flawlessly. ….even perfectly. True, I did not catch a single fish with it, but anyone who has been about this sort of thing for very long can attest that such failure can hardly be laid at the feet of the equipment……I can honestly say that coming home empty handed, as it were, had absolutely nothing to do with any deficiency in the design, components, or manufacture of the this rod, reel, or any other of the components of the system. But then, having done some test casting on the lawn prior to packing for the trip, I already knew that this would be the case. As is almost always the case, barring a mechanical failure (which, in this case at least, did not occur), the responsibility for the success (or lack of thereof) of the endeavor must rest squarely in the hands of the user. Fortunately, the perceived potential disaster which demanded the purchase of this system never happened, but as such an occurrence remains an all too real possibility I remain convinced of the wisdom of foresight and preparation for the worst eventuality and I will continue to carry this particular backup system secure in the expectation that it will continue to perform exactly as it did on this occasion. Wolfgang

They sell a combo with a Prestige reel for $69. The Prestige is an Okuma Sierra with Cabelas name on it so you are basically paying $30 for the reel, about $5-$10 less than you can find it retail. Here’s a link. : http://makeashorterlink.com/?V66322B12 G.C.

Okay. You fellas have lost me again. What is the logic to putting a $400 reel on a $39 rod?

The basic principle which underlies fly fishing (as most of us practice it at any rate) is that a rod is used to impart a certain amount of kinetic energy to a fairly heavy line which, in turn, then causes that energy to be transferred to a leader and thus to the fly at the end. The rod and line are then used to maintain some control over the action of the fly which, if all goes well, will entice a fish to impale itself on the hook, at which time the rod and line are used to draw the fish toward the fisher who then either releases it or bops in on the pate and transfers it to a creel or some other receptacle until such time as it is convenient to cook and eat it. The reel holds the excess line. Some few individuals prefer to save the cost of a reel and wind the line around their necks instead. This is said to be a particularly effective method for salt water species like tarpon and sailfish as the large diameter of the neck (relative to that of a common reel arbor) ensures quick takeup of slack line. However, as this method is not widely practicesd (as yet) it is too soon to be certain of its efficacy. We await your reports.
To the Group, I am interested in your advice on those fly fishing combos I see in the major catalogs. I am building up bit of a pile in the form of bonus bucks with my credit card and was thinking to treat myself to a nice intermediate level rod/reel combo, but all the different choices are a bit daunting. So, if you had about $200.00 to cash in on a new rod and reel, say 6-8 wt., which make/model would you choose? Thanks, Mike Seeley

Errr, you’re missing the big picture. The display of emoticons as graphics is in *your* software. Us text-only types still see them as the text they are (well, to be more accurate for the literal minded, as the standard text representation of the bit patterns they are). You don’t send big yellow smileys, you only see them. If you turn off the setting Willi mentioned, you will then see the same reality we all do. –Stan

They STAND OUT! This is a dramatic change. I’ve always thought of smileys as cover-your-ass devices — protection from literal-minded pedants with no sense of humor, but otherwise harmless cliches that all reasonable people ignored. Now they’re in my face. Two or three of the new, improved smileys distract from the actual content of the post.

Had a *real* need to fish today. So, I decided to swing up the valley and hit the river just below the Upper Souris refuge dam. Had heard some of the small panfish were hitting. Sounded like just what the doctor ordered. Now is where the folly starts — I have an 8′ 4 wt. in the car for when the urge to sneak off hits. Listen to the weather report, and they say wind gusting to 30 mph. Oh well, I figure, I can perhaps set up on a sheltered section, out of the wind, and still be able to cast in a halfways alright manner. Get out of the car and string up. Wind is channeling quite efficiently down the river. Walk to the bank anyhow, and proceed to flail away… Ugh. Head is not screwed on straight. Attempt to muscle the 4 wt. Leader system is also too long, and can’t even turn the weighted #10 scud over with a roll cast. Situation heading downhill rapidly. Pick up and head to the small fishing pier to attempt to jig the scud from on high. This works, after a fashion, unless one is exposed to the wind or a gust comes along and lifts the whole assembly out of the water, to hover several feet above it. Decide to proceed upstream to a point area where I think I can cast downwind. Oh yeah, the forward cast is downwind, but backcasts are problematic. Gusts collapse the loop going back. Wind dies a bit, and I proceed to muscle the thing again. Not paying a lot of attention to my backcast either. Can feel the line almost straightening behind me, and give it a quick snap forward, just as a gust kicks up. Snap is the operative phrase, as I hear the line crack behind me. Line goes forward and falls nicely on the water, but I figure the scud went flying when I cracked the whip. Strip in, and find that not only is the scud gone, but the leader, braided loop, and about 6-8" of my fly line as well. Reel up in disgust with myself. As I’m packing the rod back up, hear something across the bank from me, and see a nice whitetail buck looking at me. He gives a snort and bounds off into the thick brush. Sit down on the bank and look around. See a female Bittern fishing down the far bank. She has no luck either, and flies off. Look upstream and see a Pellican floating my way. Watch it sail on by. None of the preceeding folly seems to matter all that much. Would be quite content to sit there for awhile, just taking it all in. See a small fish take something off the top with a splashing rise. Think it was a perch, but it really doesn’t matter. Life is good when one is on the water. Unfortunately, it was time for me to head back home. Fixed the business end of my fly line when I got home, and am ready to go again. Forecast says much less wind tomorrow, so perhaps I will head back in the afternoon for awhile. Lots of grasshoppers about. If the wind will allow me to unleash the 4 wt. again, I might try some dry fly fishing with a suitable hopper tie. Will throw the 7 wt. in the car in case the breeze is too stiff. And if it’s blowing a gale again, I might just sit on the bank and watch the world go by. Todd

Hey all, Just a quick question on the use of the float and fly. How many of you guys use it, and how have you done? I just bought a new rod and reel strictly for Float and Fly fishing. I tie all my own float and fly jigs using Fox hair and Daiichi hooks. I stick with 1/32 and 1/16 ounce. So far I have caught a bunch of smallies and about a 6.5lb Channel cat, and of course (if you live on the Winnebago system) some sheepshead. Just thought I would "fish" for comments on the float and fly. Take care all and tight lines, Chris Rennert Oshkosh, WI

Response:

I use it some in cold water, but not a tremendous amount. I’ve caught some nice fish with it — mostly smallies. Never anything huge though. Charlie Nuckols — the man credited with popularizing the technique, if not actually devising it — was a great friend of mine, and a truly awesome smallmouth fisherman. He preached the float ‘n’ fly gospel to me, so I learned it from the best. But I never had the knack for it that he showed. I just bought a new rod and reel strictly for Float and Fly fishing.

I am planning a trip to the Outer Banks of NC in August, probably staying on Cedar Island and boating over to the back of the core banks where I would like to do some fly fishing. My fly fishing experience is limited to cold water trout streams. I have no saltwater fly fishing experience, and I have not visited the Outer Banks before. Is my plan reasonable? Is the western side of the national seashore good for fly fishing? Are the waters around Cedar Island good for fly fishing? What species of fish can I expect to catch in this area on flies? What flies are good for use in this area? Thank you, Bob

FWIW, if I were you I would consider hiring a guide for a day or two. Your trout equipment is going to be unsuitable in the salt due to salt water corrosion problems. In addition it is not uncommon to hook fish that run a long way, and without sufficient backing, you are likely to lose a fly line as well as ruin a reel. A guide will help you with your casting which probably is going to be in windy conditions. Casting is much different in salt water conditions. I have no monetary connections with guides, but some of the best money I have ever spent was for guides when I was visiting in unfamiliar places and fishing unknown waters. Give ROFF a report when you get back.

You mean you didn’t like chuck ‘n duck? Don’t understand why not? Nice to catch big fish on traditional flies – probably the most elegant fly that’s ever been used on that river.
The first drift with a Green Highlander hair wing produced a viscous strike and a short battle ending in a lost fly. Tied on another Highlander and two drifts later a 34" steelhead that had to be over 20 lbs took the fly. This one I landed. My first steelie and not a bad fish either.

Way ta go Paul. Never tried the green highlander, but now I’ll have to tie a few. :-) Joe F.

Kinda curious about that myself. I’ve been there a couple times, without success; but that could easily be because I only went because the Salmon was too high and conditions are less than optimal at Sandy as well. I’ve heard "stories" that Sandy was good, but I don’t go often enough to have a fair opinion. Friday I opted to fish South Sandy Creek since the Salmon was still high and I was told in one of the shops that that was my best shot.

The water was fairly clear. I was able to make out fish about 30′ away in 3′ of turbulent water. I went there on the advice of the Inn keeper and one of the shops as the best chance for getting fish. However, the water temps were 56 and not much visibility. The Salmon was much clearer. South Sandy Creek should be renamed Silty Creek since there was a lot more silt than sand or gravel. I’ll post a picture of the fly that I caught the fish on when I get home tonight.
  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – So last year was one of those trips that would be funny if it was happening to someone else. We spent two days in the upper fly zone and everyone around me was catching fish. I was standing in the water practicing my casting. Actually I was the only one who was casting. My friend comes over to see what I’m doing wrong and asks to see my setup. I have a 9wt with a sink tip and a flouro leader with 6# tippet. He chuckles and say turn the line around on the reel and fish with the running line. Tie a dropper on your line 4′ behind the fly and put these on it. Then he hands 4 large split shots. There was enough lead here that even Louie would have been disgusted. Then explains that I should flip the line on the ground behind me and then cast the line out into the river using the weight to pull the running line. That’s just about the most unethical thing I’ve ever heard of. After a few different flies I found the right one. The first drift with a Green Highlander hair wing produced a viscous strike and a short battle ending in a lost fly. That viscosity will get you every time. Seriously, congratulations Paul.
I think sight fishing is the only way to fish. It is no different then casting to a rising fish. You have located the fish because it is showing it self. You cast to it because A) you are trying to catch fish B) the rising fish gives away its location and C) it you wanted to pratice casting you could have done that on your front lawn. replace rising fish with large fish that stands out like a sore thumb and you have sight fishing.
Response:

Having been skunked on a few steelhead trips to the Salmon River in NY I was looking forward to this one because I was determined to catch one of these beasts. I’ve been up until the wee hours for the past month tying flies for this trip. Some of the patterns were traditional patterns, others more contrmporary and some I was experimenting. I also tied a few of the flies the friends I went with last year caught all their fish on. So last year was one of those trips that would be funny if it was happening to someone else. We spent two days in the upper fly zone and everyone around me was catching fish. I was standing in the water practicing my casting. Actually I was the only one who was casting. To which he replies. I can but I won’t catch anything. He was right. I did turn the line around and went 0 for 1. I had a conflict so I couldn’t make the trip this year with my friends so I was going to fish yesterday and today and Peter was going to meet me. Then they turned up the water. Flows of 750 to 1000CFS are good for wading and the river was running at 6000CFS. I called Peter and we decided that it wasn’t worth the trip. Then they cut the water back to 3500 and I was hoping that they would drop it again for the weekend. I called Peter but he had already cancelled his holiday and booked some appointments. Since fishing credits around here are use them or loose them I decided to go anyways. Friday I opted to fish South Sandy Creek since the Salmon was still high and I was told in one of the shops that that was my best shot. I spent about 10 hours working that river and all I had to show for it was a couple of small mouths and a sunburn. Granted the smallies were about 4lbs each but not exactly what I was looking for. On the way back to the Inn I called the water line for the Salmon River and the flows were being dropped to 2000CFS. I should be able to fish that. Just after sun up this morning I went to the upper fly zone and had the place to myself. I started going through my box of flies looking for something to interest the steelies. I was using an 8′ 6/7wt I had built using a Partridge blank with a fast sinking line and 6# flouro tippet (and NO lead). After a few different flies I found the right one. The first drift with a Green Highlander hair wing produced a viscous strike and a short battle ending in a lost fly. Tied on another Highlander and two drifts later a 34" steelhead that had to be over 20 lbs took the fly. This one I landed. My first steelie and not a bad fish either. I had six highlanders in the box and managed to loose 5 of them to fish. But I landed 2 fish the second being a 25" male. I had a couple strikes on a purple thing I tied but with the success that the highlander had. By this time it was noon and a guide and his sport showed up. Sure enough he seems to be chucking a lot of lead into the river. The interesting thing was that he was standing where I had my first two hook-ups. Not where I was when I had the hookups but where the fly was. The guide must have told the sport that he’ld put him "on the fish" and meant it literally. The deepest I waded was ankle deep. Any deeper and I was would have been stepping on or at least spooking fish. So mission accomplished I headed out. I Spent the next 3 hours checking out the lower part of the river. It was suggested that if I went away fishing for a couple days I might bring some fish home. There were no fish to be seen in the lower streches of the river. I had saved the last Highlander to fish the lower part of the river with but never got the opportunity. I’ll tie a dozen to take with me next year. Paul

I love reading stuff like this. Shows me that we haven’t lost touch with the larger sphere of angling activities. I’ve run into some people who love to fly fish but they just don’t seem to be interested in fishing in general. Mu

You may have seen racks that hold fly rods before, but have you ever seen one that holds reels and stores spare spools as well? We doubt it. Here it is– a unique Rack that will hold six (up to 9 ft) fly rods and six reels. This wooden rack is hand crafted and framed in cedar. Rod sections rest comfortably and safely on felt. Reels hang in the center and in the base there’s a drawer for spare spools. Obviously, it was designed by a fly fisherman for fly fishermen. Visit our site and see a rod and reel rack made by a fisherman for fishermen www.t-f-g.com
