Vic: Access is easy at cut out parking along side the Elk refuge. Put on gear and walk to Flat Creek(couple hundred yards). My son lives in Jackson and fishes the creek often. He has not mentioned it being dry. I can’t see that hapening frankly. We will be there next month. I have fished the creek an it is the PHD of fly fishing. Fish are VERY spooky. You can wade easily although I have never seen anyone do it cause you spook the fish. Best to sneak along the bank so as not to be seen and cast from there. There are some really BIG fish in it, but probably by now they’ve seen about every fly in existance. Creek is never crowded–that’s not the problem…the fish are SMART. Good luck…sincerely. I’d be interested in your outcome. George Reber

Thanks George! September is Elk mating season, no clanking about, eh. I’ll give it a try from the bank. Fish usually rise around 11:00 AM, and return for the evening hatch around 4:00 PM? Tight lines, Vic

Thanks for the reply. After almost 25 years of putting up with me, SWMBO is pretty reasonable. I was just getting a bit worried that there would be an obnoxious odor floating throughout the house for the entire fermenting period. The wort boil won’t be so bad; fan in the kitchen window and a promise that it’s just one day of the process will be okay. If the fermenting is no big problem I’ll keep it where I had in mind. Heck, I’ve spilled beer before, so wouldn’t be much different upon occasion 8). Ricky – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I run my fermenters in the bathroom, in the unused bathtub (I use the wet t-shirt trick to keep the fermenters cool enough during the summer). Aside from the one fermentation that got so vigorous that it blew out the airlock and started oozing out onto the lid of the fermenter, there has been no noticeable smell. Even that one that did smell a bit (it basically smelled like spilled beer) cleared up as soon as the fermentation subsided and I cleaned off the ooze. The smell that stinks up the house and makes SWMBO upset is when I’m boiling the wort and add the hops. I think it smells wonderful, but she…. well let’s just say she is of a different opinion. Its gotten so bad, that SWMBO has told me she hates my new hobby. Speaking of SWMBO, I’m getting ready place an order to try my hand at this. SWMBO is worried about the house smelling of beer during fermentation. I explained that it won’t be smelling like beer; it’s yeast and grains, it’ll smell more like bread baking. Just how big a lie was that? Ricky

Response:

My wife is 8 months pregnant… I think this contributes to her wild swings of sometimes taking an interest in my brewing, other times cursing the very notion of it. Of course she can’t have any beer, but I defended my return to brewing by claiming that the beer will all be ready for her to drink after the baby comes. Plus I tell her that once the baby comes I won’t have time to brew, so that’s why I’ve just got to have 2 or 3 batches going at once now. Naturally I’m hoping to sneak in the occaisional brew session later this year, but for awhile I fear it’ll be all baby, all the time.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Its gotten so bad, that SWMBO has told me she hates my new hobby. What is it with SWMBOs anyway? Mine once said through clenched teeth "I *REALLY WISH* you would get a DIFFERENT hobby" But then I clean up the kitchen so perfectly she has no ammunition…. Then of course there’s the one where she asks whether reading all these brewing books, websites and magazines are more important than her… do I have to answer that? Mine tolerates it pretty well (so far). She just uses it as an excuse to feed her hobby–you would not believe the amount of yarn the woman has. And she bought some kind of yarn winding doohickey that I just love (she doesn’t ask me to help her wind it any more). So get her hooked on her own hobby…

So your a little compulsive. Be honest this has happened before maybe not tropical fish, making arrow heads, chess, banjo, fly fishing, bicycling and sailing but surely you recognize the pattern. I myself went down with my German friend Brunhilda (I am not making this up.) to the local brewery to get a party pig of stout. They had a homebrew section! After that there was some sort of frenzy and when the fog cleared I had all this gear including Kegs, a refer, pots, a chiller, hoses stuff … big pile of stuff! Now when they see me coming I can see them lick their lips from the middle of the street. My wife knew there was trouble (brewing) when the books started showing up. (The next horse she buys I’m getting a brew sculpture. ) In fact I am thinking that tomorrow, when the brewery opens up; I will buy another book; yes, a big fat one on making the perfect cream ale! When you are feeling frustrated with this compulsiveness it is important to smoke lots and lots of cigars. Also it helps to rotate addictions so as not to be overwhelmed. Right now I am rotating through American Ales as fast as I can brew and heading for the English ones, then Stouts, then Lagers generally by 2005 (Spring) I should be up to lambics. No sense in overdoing it. art

After looking through some threads via google searches I finally found one I think answers my question plus one question I didn’t ask. As to fermenting, someone mentioned they ferment in the basement because of smell and others that their spouse hated it, so I guess it must not be a "baking bread" smell. 8) I didn’t even think about the brewing process but folks posted it "smells great"/"makes you want to vomit" so sort of YMMV it seems. Maybe I need to rethink where I’m going to be doing this. I have a cooker and I have a workshop with part sectioned off and air conditioned, but I have no running water there (or I should say, no sink — there is a water hose outlet outside the shop door). It might work, just figured it wouldn’t be as sanitary as the kitchen. Ricky – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Its gotten so bad, that SWMBO has told me she hates my new hobby. He mentioned that there is a small river called the Deschutes (not to be confused with the more famous Oregon river), that has some cutts and rainbows. I was just wondering if I should bother flying with all the gear to fish a morning there. Thanks.

I don’t know a darn thing about Washington fishing but I do know it is better to bring some gear and not need it than to not bring the gear and then find out you could use it. — Wayne Knight Expert in creating tailing loops and windknots Otherwise Fishless in Kansas

Walt, I do not know anything about the Deschutes near Olympia, but do know they do have about 2 or 3 rivers that are good for steelhead fishing within an hour so South of Olympia. Bring the gear! Luckyboy

Response:

Its been about 10years since I fished the Deschutes near the brewery in Olympia (my sister-in-law used to live in Lacey and I fished the river whenever we visited) so I don’t know the current situation. However, it used to be decent fishing thru the golf course for searun cuts, the occaisonal steelhead and I even once caught a silver. Its a fairly small stream and definately urban conditions, but it beats sitting around with inlaws. Bob Weinberger

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just got off the phone with a fly shop in town that reported decent fishing for cutts in the Deschutes with some fish being taken on dries when the sun comes out. I am definately bringing the gear. Besides, fly fishing is the best cure I know after a long night with an old friend and some single malt. Thanks for convincing me.
you might want to think about fishing the saltwater that surrounds the area. there should be some sea-run cutts around, and even some resident silver salmon (especially north around tacoma). chris

Why do you not pool all your information and set up a fly fishing portal together? Besides centralising good tips and advice, you could offer forums and polls, organise events, sell a variety of gear either through yourselves or commission from a vendor, …… Plus, by grouping your efforts into a single site, you’d be more attractive to advertisers and could split any revenue.
Cheers G. (as I tip my ale). Natty

Response:

It was a long trip home but the beautiful Piper Comanche put her nose into the wind and plowed ahead hour after hour, riding like a wild bronc over Butte Pass just west of Livingston Montana known for its rip-tide winds and rollers. She bore down and crossed the main fury at 10,500 going west bound, settled down and then headed for the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness mountains, along the central edge for refuge which was not to be. I stretch out my left leg for relief and the new scars stretched in refrain. My right leg was stretched all the way into the co-pilot side and the hours passed by, one by one. During those hours, high above my beautiful ragged Rockies I thought of the well wishers in Roff and the prayers that went with me and I can say to all, they were well answered. I was coming home. The fuel and strong head winds were not going to allow Miss Blue to make it across the mighty Selway Wilderness, and so like a leaf from an oak the throttle was brought back, flaps lowered full bore and she came down like a rocket. Naturally, the wind was out of the west and the Hamilton Airport runs north south for perfect cross-wind landing conditions. Lined up on a three mile final to runway 160 so as to get a feel for how much crab she was going to take and how much rudder, it was evident the right wing would be very low. I kissed her down on the right gear which rode out the vicious cross-wind for over a thousand feet before Miss Blu found her footing and two wheels. To get the weight on both gear a.s.a.p. I lifted the flaps and that planted her onto the runway with confidence. So far, so good. Once again in the air and flying for over 10 hours, the remote callings of the Selway slid under my wings. Gladys was snoozing to the drone of an engine that always sounded happy. I began to think back about our operations and of the stress and concern I had for hers. I do know that under the anesthesia I slipped into the world of dreams and the fond wishes of many excepting one. I have met some very unusual people in my lifetime, but this character is best described in the dream I had. The good is I survived some very serious procedures. The bad is the ill wishes extended that carried over into a chocolate/vanilla swirl of haziness. I slowly awoke from the Land of Oz. The ugly part of not having control of one’s life, was over. The Selway high meadows remained lush and green and an Elk lifted her head as her yearling trotted about confused. The Comanche crossed the continental divide as I dialed in a little down trim for the long decent home. I cannot drive a vehicle for four weeks but I can tell everyone the operations were an amazing success. I am very strong and fit and all my fly fishing doctors are very pleased with the results and with their patient. There is a bonding that takes place between those that fly fish and who are doctors that fly fish also. I wish to thank each and every one of them and I wish to thank all of you who were at my bed side in thought and deeds. It meant a lot. Believe me. Again, thank you all. Mr.Gink "the saga continues" http://www.gink.com/

No, Walt you’re not the only one. After college I started playing Rugby. A much saner and safer sport. For years I wouldn’t watch football because it was so rediculous. I started playing rugby about the same time as the instant replay wich made it seem even worse. A few years ago a friend invited me over to watch a game and I went. Sometime during the game the topic got to the state of the sport to which he replied. This isn’t a sport. It’s made for TV sensationalism to generate revenues for the network. Kind of like 60 Minutes or pro wrestling. From then on it’s been 22 dancers and a couple of zebras and It’s rather funny to watch. But’ it’s not a sport. Paul And this has nothing to do with the local team.

Response:

As I understand the re-play rule, to overturn a field call, the reviewer must see clear evidence that the play was called incorrectly. If the re-play official saw clear evidence he/she must have seen something that no one else did, not even Madden & Summerall. Don’t know if any one call alters the outcome but that review was b.s. No I’m not a Tampa Bay or a St. Louis fan (actually, I root for the Giants).
An anonymous insult from a cretin that can’t even spell embarrassed, yet sees fit to put it in the subject header. Talk about looking foolish. Hang around Trude, you could learn some things from the rude and ignorant denizens of ROFF. I doubt that you will, your head is tucked so far up your a** your hemorrhoids hug your bow tie. — Ken Fortenberry
