Reflections on a dark night

Question:

Pounding, powerful and relentless, against uncaring and eternal sand, each wave seems to reach a little further, striving for the spot on which I stand. Two steps forward, three steps back, the dance is similar for every cast, a constant rhythm, lulling and relaxing, who knows how much time has passed? Feet, sinking in, requiring that one shuffle now and then, a welcome break, Casting, waiting, watching, senses tensed, hoping  for the long expected take. Was that a bite? Or merely seaweed drifting in the current, dead, but active still, Perhaps a wily seatrout or a cod, just mouthed the fly, and moves in for the kill? Shooting stars distract, hurtling brilliant through the cold and crackling winter night, freezing fingers, cold protesting feet, red face and dripping nose, a sorry plight, legs, slowly turning numb, arms aching from the constant and unceasing strain, rod held high. above the waves, each tiny pluck and movement causes pain Swimming, hopefully enticingly, the fly, spurred on by faith and hope and thought, approaches yet again the crashing waves, hovers for a moment, once more caught, capricious currents, drive it, to wobble, shimmer, shake and  twist and bend. much like the thoughts of  he, who patient and persistent, holds fast the other end. At last! A solid take, and line runs freely from the spool, twenty yards or more, Rod bends, arms tense, back bends, heels dig deeper into crumbling shore, the battle wages, fish and man, bound now by tenuous strands, far mightier than steel, commence to measure, each their skill, with each run and leap, each hard-won turn of reel. Eyes, long since accustomed to the starry night, still strain to see a glimpse or flash, who knows what might have taken? and then the fish leaps, falling with a mighty splash, a silver ghost, a monster, a prize beyond compare, rising from the dark and restless deep, how long and hard must angler fight, before he be allowed his prize to land and keep? Hours and nights, long winters, in cold and storm,  for many  seasons he has stood, searching, learning, hoping,  waiting, to gain just such a prize, from the raging flood, Alas, this night, although he uses every trick and all his skill, it is simply not to be, almost within his grasp, his prize spits contemptuously the hook, and sinks into the sea. Freezing now, disconsolate, gear is packed, and angler turns to home along the beach, the prize is gone, but angler knows, that this time it was very nearly well within his reach, there will be other nights, perhaps indeed much greater prizes, things well beyond compare, should you seek such, haste to the beach, you will find angler, watching, waiting, hoping, there. Gentlemen, I would sincerely appreciate any advice for purchasing a winter "all – around"  but primarily fly fishing Gore-Tex type rain jacket.  It does not need to be Gore-Tex name brand just something similar and would like it to be an outdoor color, either solid brown, tan or camo would be suffice,  I would also like it to be more than just a shell so it will not only keep me dry but warm as well.  I do already layer properly with thinsulate and fleece but need something a little heavier for the very coldest of days in winter.  I live and fish primarily in Maryland and will begin shortly to fish in PA and WV.  I would also be glad to hear of any other suggestions for staying comfortable through the winter season. (Besides staying indoors) Sadly I can not afford top of the line products but anything in the $150.00 to $200.00 would be great. Thanks in advance, Tony Norton

Being in that part of the country it should be easy to get a military issue gortex field jacket WITH a liner.  I live in Ky and we can usually get them at Fort Knox for about 150.00 dollars.  I guess the key to this is knowing someone in the military who can get you this stuff. Being close to Ft.    I live about 3 miles from Ft. Meade and have found quite a few places where one can get the military gortex (mostly in Glen Burnie). I love the stuff.  Super durable and is relatively comfortable.  Gotex makes a spray that can reseal the gortex if its getting old.  A used jacket and the spray will be about half the price of the new.  Try Sunnies stores, there’s one on Richie Hwy north of 100.   If you don’t buy the military, make sure the seams are double stitched and sealed.  All pocket zippers should zip down to close and have a weather flap over the top.  If there is a hood, ensure that the hood is attached about halfway up the colar.  This will keep the wet off your neck when you take the hood off.  Make sure it is lined.  Gortex can be like a tent, if you touch it with your hand on the inside while it is wet, the damp can come through.  I don’t like the net linings, a good nylon taffeta inner is good.        Frank Reid – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Being in that part of the country it should be easy to get a military issue gortex field jacket WITH a liner.  I live in Ky and we can usually get them at Fort Knox for about 150.00 dollars.  I guess the key to this is knowing someone in the military who can get you this stuff. Challenging ROFF!

Question:

George, I honestly think no one wants a $300 cane rod, that is why you have to push them all the time. Cane rods are not for newbies , they are for enthusiasts. They cannot compete with graphite on pure performance, although you say yours can!  Cane  if for when you discover that hertage and  presentation is what draws you to the sport. Fly fishing has more to with history  and the joy of fishing with a piece of equipment that  the maker has spent some time on and not  his rejects. George, this is a new mellenium where folk are prepared to spend a little cash on a nice piece of equipment.  I live in an area where cycling is a big thing. Do they all ride $100 bikes? no chance, they all ride hand made racing bikes and dress up to match, even if they look bloody stupid. Well, my oldest grandson and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Labrador.  Fishing was tough because of flood conditions and the weather, but we caught some nice brook trout on #16 and #18 Goddard Caddis’.   We had trouble keeping the fly afloat because of the wind and rain, but Jeff used Dave’s Bug Flote (sic), and I used Albolene and the problem was solved. The Nikon Nikonos… assuming you’ve got the bucks.  It however is really designed for underwater photography and its lenses and accesories are desgined for that environment.. no long lenses etc. Jim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text — Bill Kiene Kiene’s Fly Shop Sacramento, CA, USA http://www.kiene.com

Hi, Bill.  If you’re not planning on taking tons of underwater photos, stay away from the Nikonos line, as well as all other SLR’s.  Beautiful cameras, but a bit overkill for what it sounds like what you’re looking for.  If you do need an SLR, get one of those transparent housings that are held in place by screwing them onto the front of the lens… they look like transparent plastic bags.  Otherwise, go with a p&s.  You might look at Minolta’s zoom p&s that goes to 33 feet, Canon’s A-1 (non-zoom) to 16 feet, or even Pentax’s Espio 105WR (38-105mm).  This last one is Class 5 weather resistant, can have water dumped on it, and floats if dropped into water.  Just some thoughts. chris

Just to avoid confusion, the Nikonoses which have been recommended (I’ve seen a recommendation for the III, a couple for the IV-A, and mine for a used V or IV-A) are not SLRs. They are viewfinder cameras that take interchangebable lenses (similar to rangefinder, but they don’t use a rangefinder for focusing). I’ve used Nikonos viewfinder cameras for maybe 10 years, and I get most of my use on dry land. My underwater use is snorkeling, and they would probably qualify as overkill even for that use, but they are, in my estimation, excellent cameras overall, even on land. And they are built like tanks. If the camera Bill chooses is going to get rough treatment on his trips, I would not shy away from a Nikonos as overkill. — Phil Stripling               | email to the replyto address is presumed http://www.cieux.com/        | civex.com is read daily.

You might look into getting a Nikonos IVa with a 35mm lens. It’s made by Nikon and, with good seals, is waterproof, sandproof, and (unless you open the back to change film) sturdy. = = = – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi All, I ways wondering what water proof cameras are out there now? Before you buy.

Response:

Check out also the Sea & Sea Motomartine or Motormarine, which offers compatability with the Nikonos line at much less cost. Be aware that many of the lenses can be used ONLY underwater, so check that out carefully. In the P&S line Canon (I believe) makes one that is waterproof to a couple of meters. Much better than the weatherized kind for you I think. This is probably your best choice, as it is designed to work above water as well. Nikon made an underwater P&S about 10 years ago which was a great camera for the kind of situation you describe, but which has, sadly, been discontinued. Good luck, — Toby

Bill, The only true waterproof camera is the Nikonos by Nikon. They work above water as well as underwater.  They are, of course, expensive.  I have a Nikonos III w/28mm lens, strobe, etc. in floating equipment case that I need to sell.  This system has been used only three times.  If you know any divers, they probably know this camera well. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Actually, Wayno, you missed the point, it was sarcasm.  Both are SPAM.  The point was that people complained about the camelback dude, but want to give George free rein.  I just hold all the spammers in equal disdain. Fishtales of the Week

Question:

WELL DONE I LAUGHED ALL WAY THROUGH IT

Response:

Have I’ve got a good one for you! I traveled to British Columbia the last week of August to visit family up in Mackenzie. My new brother-in-law (affectionately known as Phlem) is a real die-hard fly fisherman. Me – a die hard bass fisherman (picture a bass boat, 150hp, 10 rods, 400 crankbaits, 500 jigs, 4000 pieces of rubber, and 5 more tackle boxes; all hurtling insanely down the lake at 60+ mph). Anyway, he convinced me that I should try my hand at fly fishing for the first time. So I borrowed my brother

Berkshires flyshop

Question:

Anyone know a decent flyshop in the Berkshires…for local advice and flytying materials.

Response:

If you are in the northern Berkshires, you might try the Smith and Morey shop on Route 2 in Charlemont.  The proprietor is a friendly guy and, along with one of his buddies, gave me some advice on the Deerfield last weekend.  The shop is a combination of hunting and fishing supplies, so the flyfishing/tying merchandise is not dazzling.  He said he would only be open on weekends after Christmas, but you can also check his main outdoor store (same name) just off of Route 2 in Shelburn Falls on the main street about a block away from the bridge crossing the Deerfield. Good luck! Rob Foster

Colorado in July

Question:

I have been offerd a trip to the area of Dillion Co. in July. I would love to take advantage of this offer. Can anyone tell me what the fishing would be like there. Is a guide a must? are there areas that are easy to get to with out a guide? still water vs. river/stream? We have never visited the state before so we have no idea where we are heading.

Response:

Dear visitor: July in Summit county offers a variety of flyfishing and regular fishing opportunities.  The obvious and most close is the Blue River which flows through Dillon.  There are also numerous private streams and ponds that you can fish.  The best advice I can give you is to call up the fishing stores in Breckenridge or Dillon and tell them what kind of fisherman you are (Novice, etc…) and decide if you are willing to spend money to have a private guide take you on private water.  They run anywhere from 125$/Day to $300/Day depending on the Luxery factor.  With the amount of snow in Summit county this year, runoff will be longer and may not be good in July in the Blue River.  I might want to try Beaver ponds if  the water is not clear.

Clarks Fork River, Montana

Question:

: I am planning a trip up to Montana to fish the Clarks Fork River.  I have : traveled past it many times.  I have no idea about fishing regulations, : favorable areas or fly patterns.  The area I am thinking of is around Missoula. Don’t just think Clark Fork River.  Just east of Missoula is Rock Creek.  Just north is the Jocko.  If you like BIG water, fish the Clark Fork.  If you like a small stream, do Rock Creek.  If you like real small, fish the Jocko.   The only problem with the Jocko is that it is on an Indian Reservation and requires a permit in addition to your fishing license. Check out a map.  There are many class rivers, all within an hour of Missoula.  Lots of great opportunities.  You don’t say when you will be there, but there are large stone fly in the Clark Fork.  I’m not sure what color since there was no hatch when I was there. Good Luck! Bob Moss Landing, Ca.

Response:

Perhaps the stone fly you refer to is the Skualla stone fly. This is a big fly, about size 8 or 10, and the Clark Fork above Missoula has lots of them. They emerge in early May, and the adult if best imitated by a med. to dark olive stimulator.  There are not alot of other good size flies on the surface this time of year, so they can really get the fishes attention.  Not many people know about them since the hatch is during the "off season". However, the locals around the Missoula really get excited about this stonefly. The area between the confluence of the Blackfoot and the confluence of Rock Creek seems best.
