Dear Miss Christina, We are the greebling experts! You can trust us kitties. You can’t trust your poor weak hoomin eyes. Believe me, they can get anywhere. They change shape, and get flat, or long or whatever they need to do to hide from you. But we can see ‘em, hear ‘em and smell ‘em. Please don’t take any risks with those horrid greeblings just waiting around to take over the house– or fly down your throat when you’re sleeping! Eeeww! I get all creepy just thinking about it. Believe me, I know it’s not yours or my mommy’s faults that you can’t see them.
Boyfriend is right. We have rug greeblings in the kitchen and the family room. Sometimes I have to move the entire rug back to get to them. Meowmy will come home and find the kitchen rug upside down and in the dining room, but she doesn’t find greeblings. That’s because I ate them all.
When Shmogg was still interested in Greeblings he had a unique way of dealing with the ones under the kitchen rug – he *surfed* on them! This is one of the first stories I ever wrote for RPCA back in April 1998: SURFING CAT Shmoggleberry lived in a pokey 2 bedroom flat for most of his life, and so took great advantage of all the extra space to run around in when we moved to a large house. The main bedroom, lounge, dining room and kitchen are all reasonably lined up, so Shmoggleberry could run full speed from one to the other. He can really get up some speed! (Since the flat was small, he couldn’t really get a decent run without having to make some very sharp, speed reducing, turns) The Kitchen has a lino floor, and since it was winter when I moved, I put some small mats down in the kitchen so I didn’t get cold feet. He very quickly discovered that if he got some speed up and then jumped onto the mat at the start of the kitchen, his momentum would allow him to "surf" across the lino, using the mat as a board. At one point, he got up to much speed, he discovered a law of thermodynamics: once you are moving, its hard to stop! THUNK! head first into the far wall of the kitchen. He let out a rather surprised "OW!" (as you would) and stopped to give himself a good grooming – which he always does when he’s done something stupid. I thought he’d learnt his lesson by getting a fairly good smack in the head. Alas, at some hideous hour of the morning, we were woken to the sounds of boomba, boomba, boomba (sound of cat hurtling through empty house, approaching speed of light), sweeeeeeeeeee….. (sound of mat sliding on lino) ….THUNK (sound of insane fluffy projectile being suddenly stopped by unforgiving wall). We had just managed to doze off, when – Boomba boomba boomba, sweee…, thunk. (just enough time to go back to sleep) boomba, boomba, boomba, sweeee…, thunk. (enough time..) boomba, boomba… etc. I caught him at it later the next day – he came screaming out of the bedroom, landed on the mat, and then put his head down so the wall would collect him on the flat bit between his ears. Almost like he was a charging bull. I guess it caused him the least amount of pain. Although I know El Moggo is probably the most cunning & conniving creature I’ve met, I also know he can be remarkably thick. Yowie

<SNIP Oh yes! I believe kitchen rug greeblings are closely related to newspaper greeblings, very sneaky little devils which take an expert cat to deal with them. — Adrian (Owned by Snoopy & Bagheera) A house is not a home, without a cat.

OH MY!!!! I’d compleetly foregotten about newspaper greeblings. But, from the state of the last newspaper I brought in the house & left on the couch when I went to work…. I think the furballs got them all. —

Thanks to the dedicated work of my 2 intrepid FHP (Feline House Patrol) members, my house is greebling free. Every so often they try to get in… But my cats hear them (we hoomans think it’s ‘house settling’ noises) & instantly go on patrol, checking all corners, window leges & especially the bathroom (greeblings LOVE to sneak in through the bathtub drain)… So far, the house remains surrounded by greedblings, but they can’t get in. They are such good guards for being so young. They will be formidable when they are grown. It is good to feel safe from evil greeblings.

Ah now I see! They’d be under the floorboards in my place though, and anywhere in the house when the gat needs to go the toilet, he does a loud howl and runs around like a maniac then does his business, odd creature!

  Is there such a thing?

Is there ever! They belong to the family of under-the-rug greeblings, and Mere has been showing me how lacking Frank and Nikki have been lately in hunting them. It seems that they have let the greeblings multiply enormously, though Nikki does hunt them half-heartedly every now and then. However, Mere is on their case, and is taking care that they (the greeblings) keep on their toes. — Marina, Frank, Nikki, and introducing: Mere! marina (dot) kurten (at) pp (dot) inet (dot) fi Pics at http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankiennikki/ and http://community.webshots.com/user/frankiennikki

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – What are greeblings? Greeblings are those pesky animals that the cats chase when we can’t see anything there. One example is the under-the-rug greeblings, which apparently my place is full of, and which Mere chases with abandonment. She burrows under the rugs, bunny-kicks them and bites them to kill the greeblings under there. She also chases the bed greeblings when I make the bed, and makes sure I am protected against these foul beings. — Marina, Frank, Nikki, and introducing: Mere! marina (dot) kurten (at) pp (dot) inet (dot) fi Pics at http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankiennikki/ and http://community.webshots.com/user/frankiennikki

  What are greeblings?

Is there such a thing? Boyfriend says there is. For the past two weeks or so he has been fishing with his paw under the edge of one of the kitchen rugs. Not all the time, but enough. I turn the edge over to see if there is a beetle or something; there never is. I put the edge down again. He lifts it and says look, there it goes, you missed it. I’m not sure whether to believe him, what do all you kitties think? Has there ever been anything called an under-the-kitchen-rug greebling?
A few months back I shared the news about having found another job, after losing one just a few months prior. Things are going pretty well as far as the actual work part goes, not too difficult from a physical standpoint and enough weekends to save my ass before it falls off. The really good news is that I got a fabulous 6 month evaluation (public employment..) and I am now a permanent staff member. In the summer of ‘98 when I fell apart, it never occurred to me that I might be where I am now. After all by the summer of ‘99 , I was barely walking and most days were about 2 hours long. Things just didn’t look all that promising, if you know what I mean. With a lot of adaptation, some pharmaceutical intervention and a little luck, I was able to crawl through the process of re-training, and then actually staying together long enough to find a job in a crappy job market. Dang. My ms has basically simmered and not boiled over for some time now. I am convinced that copaxone has made a big difference for me, as well as a lot of other stuff. A good marriage, I can still can ride a motorcycle (in fact just got a new one see http://colevalley.net/photos/bikes/03yam/yam.02.jpg), I still can fly-fish, and even go for walks in the park. Not that I haven’t had few days here and there where I felt like I had been dunked a vat of novacaine and beaten with a dead salmon, but overall I just have to say that I will probably look back on this time of my life as the good old days. Of course things won’t always be this rosy but for now , I will take it. — Jim S

EBay’s PayPal Hit by Glitches in Online Payments Mon Oct 11, 8:30 PM ET Technology – Internet Report By Lisa Baertlein

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041012/wr_nm/tech_ebay_… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – EBay Inc.’s online payment service PayPal has suffered intermittent glitches since late last week, locking some users out of their accounts for long stretches and making it difficult for some online sellers to complete deals, the company and users said on Monday. The online payment problem came at the start of eBay’s (Nasdaq:EBAY – news) seasonally biggest quarter for revenues and roughly four months after the company apologized for a run of billing and search snafus that disrupted some of the auction site’s most dedicated sellers. EBay on Monday said it was working to fix the recent PayPal problems, which have affected payments, log-ins and account creation. "We are working furiously. … We have all resources dedicated to getting it fixed as soon as possible," PayPal spokeswoman Amanda Pires told Reuters. "We haven’t found the ultimate cause," said Pires, who added that the problem appeared to be related to a coding update late on Thursday. It was not immediately clear how widespread the problems were, although eBay’s message boards were filled with postings about the PayPal glitches. Michael Bokan, of West Charlton, New York, told Reuters PayPal usually processes 5 to 10 payments a day on orders from his fly-fishing equipment Web site FlyShack.com. Bokan, who said he can see payment requests being sent to PayPal, said no payments came through on Friday, less than half than normal were processed over the weekend and just one was processed on Monday. "It’s messing things up," said one San Francisco-based PayPal user who spoke on condition he not be named. He said payments were "trickling in" to his account, although confirmation e-mails from PayPal were not. Users also complained they were unable to withdraw money from their PayPal accounts or to use their PayPal debit cards. "I can’t get paid, can’t ship and can’t get to my own money," a PayPal user wrote in a posting on eBay’s message boards. EBay has been integrating PayPal tightly into its site since it purchased the company in 2002. For example, the company added a feature to its popular "Buy It Now" function that allows sellers to accept immediate payment only through PayPal. PayPal boasted 50.4 million accounts at the end of the second quarter, during which it processed $4.4 billion in payments. Shares in eBay closed $1.14 higher at $93.73 on Monday on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

| seems to be such a co-incidence it cracks up when they put their new home | page up That shouldn’t have changed much but apparently they changed the back end at the same time and screwed everything up. Bloody idiots. GW

In all fairness, I would love to know of any programmer out there that could make even the slightest change to a system the size of eBay’s or PayPal’s, serving over 100 million pages per day, without some glitches. My hat is off to both eBay and PayPal. They did a fantastic job. SB

I broke down and got my fishing permit a couple months ago. I have been twice but didnt catch anything. I dont have the patience I use to. I could soak a hook for hours and not get bored. Now if I dont see some action in fifteen minutes I am ready to quit. -phy

I like to fish. Can’t say that I have much luck at it. I’m like the cartoon character who casts his reel, feels a "bite", and then pulls out an old rubber boot. It seems like fishing is less popular now because the pace of life is too fast. Anything that requires much time and much patience has lost it’s appeal. I think most people just don’t have the free time to spend fishing. Unfortunately that’s true for me too. > Does this make a person a redneck or something?

Still off-topic. Don wrote: > I do but never get the chance. Seems like no one likes to do it > anymore. > Does this make a person a redneck or something?

I just watched "A Perfect Storm" and got to wondering about fishing for the umpteenth time. My partner, Mike’s in the fishing industry here in Cape Town and he and all his friends love fishing. They often go away for weekends just to fish. One of Mike’s friends used to fish for a living (he still goes out to sea for work for two weeks or so every couple of months) and he would come home after being away for a month or two and go straight off for a weekend of bass/fly-fishing (not even sure if that’s the same thing). (Actually, I think his passion for fishing is what kept most of his relationships going for as long as they did. He has a tendency to get too involved too quickly and as this can sometimes scare people off, his passion for fishing would often take the pressure off the girl/ relationship.) Anyway, the reason I’m responding here is because I am wondering what the allure of fishing is. I mean, I think I understand the whole solitude/quiet thing. But that’s not enough. What else is it about? Is it something about fighting/using nature? What? – Michaela

By the time the twins finished > their White House Valley Girl routine, and Karl Rove and Karen Hughes > went all giddy in the sendup, the convention’s arc was clear. > Highly scripted screwball moments designed to soothe fears that the > Bushies are bullies alternate with high-octane, turbo moments designed > to stir up fears that we won’t be safe without the Bush bullies. > Unlike the arrogant Boston Kerry strategists, who focus-grouped and > dial-a- metered their convention to death, scrubbing most of the > direct attacks on President Bush, the arrogant Austin Bush strategists > have encouraged their non-girlie-men speakers to put the pedal to the > metal and flatten the poor Democrat who is windsurfing through his > free fall. > Despite the fact that the economy is cratering, Iraq is teetering,

those 2 seem exaggerated . > Afghanistan is reverting to warlords,

is it? i think it’s had setbacks, and their citizens suffer typical human inflexibilty… guaranteeing slow social progress…. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Dick Cheney is glowering at the > world, the war on terror has created more acts of terror, Ahmad > Chalabi is an accused spy for Iran and the Pentagon has an accused spy > for Israel, Republicans felt so good about themselves that when Arnold > Schwarzenegger said he was inspired to become a Republican by Richard > Nixon, they exploded. When Tricky Dick is a hot applause line, they’re > feeling cocky. > Republicans are political killers. They are confident that Americans, > in a 9/11 world, are going to be more drawn to political killers who > have made some "miscalculations" on Iraq, as W. put it, than with a > shaggy-haired Vietnam War protester whom Bush 41 compares to Hanoi > Jane. >"I still have great difficulty with his coming back and making those > statements before the Congress and throwing medals away," the > president’s father told Don Imus yesterday. > Republicans know that plunging ahead with a course of action, even if > it becomes obvious it’s wrong, is an easier political sell than > flip-flopping, even if it’s right.

funny how foxnews dittohead hotheads don’t even realize that the repugs are sinking in their own quicksand… all on their own. no one is really opposing them. > When the president slipped, admitting that the war on terror is > unwinnable – perhaps recognizing that terror’s a tactic, not an enemy > – he had to be saved later by Laura Bush, who fixed his stumble into > nuance. Then Mr. Kerry made the mistake of responding in Bush > black-and-white, calling the war on terror winnable.

ha! kerry says almost nothing. bush out-bloopers kerry. which is worse? … >: > While Democrats whined about the meanies and their Swift boat attacks, > the G.O.P. juggernaut rolled on. > Zell Miller, playing Cotton Mather behind the cross-like lectern, made > Mr. Cheney seem rational, with a maniacal litany of weapons he said > Mr. Kerry had opposed that can destroy any mud hut in any third world > country: B-1 and B-2 bombers, F-14A Tomcats, F-15 Eagles, Patriot and > Trident missiles, and Aegis cruisers.

not mentioning that some of hose were Carter ‘babies’. also ignoring reasons why a repug or demcon might have rejected those weapons, such as obsolescence > Just as the "third party" ad effort has been ferocious and misleading, > so have some of the attack speeches here. Dick Cheney stomped on John > Kerry the way he’s stomped on the world. In fact, he stomped on Mr. > Kerry for trying to get along with the world: "He talks about leading > ‘a more sensitive war on terror’ as though Al Qaeda will be impressed > with our softer side." It’s nice to know Mr. Cheney remembers Al > Qaeda.

’a more sensitive war on terror’ i’ve hearda bout this only via insulting reactoins. just now googled, http://www.nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg200408061120.asp whihc is amazingly polite ciriticism, rare among wrought-wingers. if this column is accurate regarding kerry’s intended meaning behind his phrase ‘more sensitive war on terror’, then kerry’s missing out on what his phrase *should* have meant. becoming frineds with citizens of countries whrer terrorirsts "breed" is probably the most effective "war on terror"…. ’sensitive’ or ‘nonsensitive’. > As others raged, Mr. Bush flew to New York and went to an Italian > community center to eat pizza with Queens firemen. The homeboy was > having a ruthless, but effective, week.

Cutups and Cutthroats By MAUREEN DOWD Published: September 2, 2004 I always enjoy hearing about how a teenage Dick Cheney stood off to the side with buckets of water to put out Lynne’s flaming batons. But there was an even better moment during Claire Shipman’s two-part "Good Morning America" interview at the Wyoming ranch this week. Trying to humanize Dr. No, ABC was let into the inner sanctum to watch Mr. Cheney take his 4-year-old granddaughter on her first solo horsie ride and hear how he’s teaching his granddaughters fly-fishing. Advertisement Ms. Shipman asked the vice president "his greatest guilty pleasure." His wife quickly interjected that it was fishing. But we all know, of course, it’s global domination. It’s always amusing to watch Republicans try to get down. At convention time, they stop bilking Joe Lunchbox to act like Joe Lunchbox. How awkward in Columbus, when W., hanging with Jack Nicklaus, noted that his grandfather was born there, so they should "send a homeboy back to Washington, D.C." Do they know a homeboy from a Lawn-Boy? How you livin’, dawg? And speaking of dawgs, whuddup with that video of Barney debating that French poodle Fifi Kerry about taxes? By the time the twins finished their White House Valley Girl routine, and Karl Rove and Karen Hughes went all giddy in the sendup, the convention’s arc was clear. Highly scripted screwball moments designed to soothe fears that the Bushies are bullies alternate with high-octane, turbo moments designed to stir up fears that we won’t be safe without the Bush bullies. Unlike the arrogant Boston Kerry strategists, who focus-grouped and dial-a- metered their convention to death, scrubbing most of the direct attacks on President Bush, the arrogant Austin Bush strategists have encouraged their non-girlie-men speakers to put the pedal to the metal and flatten the poor Democrat who is windsurfing through his free fall. Despite the fact that the economy is cratering, Iraq is teetering, Afghanistan is reverting to warlords, Dick Cheney is glowering at the world, the war on terror has created more acts of terror, Ahmad Chalabi is an accused spy for Iran and the Pentagon has an accused spy for Israel, Republicans felt so good about themselves that when Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was inspired to become a Republican by Richard Nixon, they exploded. When Tricky Dick is a hot applause line, they’re feeling cocky. Republicans are political killers. They are confident that Americans, in a 9/11 world, are going to be more drawn to political killers who have made some "miscalculations" on Iraq, as W. put it, than with a shaggy-haired Vietnam War protester whom Bush 41 compares to Hanoi Jane. "I still have great difficulty with his coming back and making those statements before the Congress and throwing medals away," the president’s father told Don Imus yesterday. Republicans know that plunging ahead with a course of action, even if it becomes obvious it’s wrong, is an easier political sell than flip-flopping, even if it’s right. When the president slipped, admitting that the war on terror is unwinnable – perhaps recognizing that terror’s a tactic, not an enemy – he had to be saved later by Laura Bush, who fixed his stumble into nuance. That’s more than enough proof. The website http://www.letsroll911.org is ranked as among the top 25K downloaded sites on the Internet in the past month. But with these two events closing in on the Bush administration, the falling polls, and the complicity of 9/11 getting known, may trigger another attack, and the declaration of martial law, in order to cancel the election, shut down the Internet as we know it, and to clamp down on further discussion of 9/11. Some say we are already in a partial police state, and some say we now more everything that has been said, the Congress, the military, the media, does nothing. Obviously they are persuaded to do nothing. http://www.911sharethetruth.com 9-11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB–OUR NATION IS IN PERIL – A Call to All True Patriots – We have actively studied the questionable nature of the official version of what happened to our nation on September 11, 2001. Throughout the first year after 9-11 we ignored and did not believe those who asked us to question the official story. Like millions of Americans we believed America had been attacked by terrorists from abroad. Sadly, we are now convinced that our government committed a vicious criminal act against its own citizens for the larger purpose of swaying us to support both domestic and foreign policies mapped out in the mid and late 1990’s. 9-11 was Hitler’s Reichstag fire of 1933 and Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor masterfully coordinated to achieve the desired ends of an imperialistic role for America in the world, patriotic support at home and the erosion of our constitutional rights. In a nutshell, the war on terrorism is a cruel hoax by a misguided, out-of-democratic control small group of individuals sabotaging the best of American values. We are in the midst of a constitutional crisis combined with severe domination from an Orwellian corporate media knowingly or unknowingly being of service to the true powerbrokers behind the curtain. We feel like we are living in the "Matrix" where we can blend in, but knowing something is horribly wrong and must be exposed. The quality of life for all of our loved ones is at stake along with the hopes of millions of people for a world of peace, freedom and ecological sustainability. If just a few of you take the time to study a little more and become involved in the 9-11 truth movement we will be greatly appreciative. We strongly feel that people of all progressive movements should involve themselves in this effort to expose the truth about 9-11 and in the greatest push ever from the grassroots to nonviolently replace our current despotic leadership. It would have tremendous positive consequences to all of our progressive movements if similar to the fall of Nixon over Watergate that the Bush administration was exposed on this and replaced. This outrageous criminal act must be brought to justice and our freedoms restored. We need to reach out now to all those who may be willing to hear and break the silence.
Yep, it was an inside job….the planes blew up INSIDE the buildings. Gee, you are so smart. You are right about specially outfitted planes… aircraft slamming into the side of a building would go in just like a missle. And correct again about the controlled demolition…those terrorists must have been really skilled to be able to CONTROL the way they demolished the buildings. By the way numbnuts, watch the footage again. The buildings did not collapse starting from the bottom. A controlled demolition would not have been done in the basement, but would have needed to take out at least a dozen floors with the size of the buildings and taken at least a week to plan, and implement. I think people would have gotten just a mite suspicious with work crews cutting through the structural pilings, setting shaped charges and running primer cord throughout the buildings. The quality of the steel made back when the towers were constructed was poor compared to today. The structural tolerance was quite low. The intense heat would collapse the pilings. And the weight exerted by the upper floors would and did cause the lower ones to fail, causing a cascade failure. The only way the building would have toppled is if the lower pilings were strong enough to hold back the collapsing upper floors and deflect the path of the fall. But, as we all saw, it did not. Cease and decist your trolling. People are getting sick of your freakish extremist "moveon.orgism". GO AWAY!!!! *PLONK*

Free press would also be uncensored. the net provides the ideal soapbox for every paranoid conspiracy theorist who knows how to use a keyboard.

Which does not mean that everything on the net or in ng’s that does not conform to your beliefs is conspiracy theory. Expressions like "conspiracy theory" appeal to the irrational side of people, and so serve only to cloud the issues. The official story of 9/11 is also a conspiracy theory: several people conspired to execute the attacks; and the story is no more than a theory because there is only precious little evidence to support it. And of all the conspiracy theories so far presented, the official story is among the silliest. Matti P.

But there is conclusive physical evidence that no 767 hit the Pentagon, in fact no evidence of fusilage of any plane found.. The fact that two, one piece that does not match photographed on the lawn points to conspiracy. There was no American Airlines flight 77 scheduled to fly that day. There is conclusive physical evididence that no passenger jet plane hit the 1st tower or penetrated it. {The film shown shown the following day 9/12, was crudely edited. You can see it by looking for the evidence "first plane") There is only three small holes in the building, none greater that a few feet. There was no American Airlines flight 11 scheduled to fly that day. What few eye witnesses say a very small plane, holding no more than 10-12 seats, or "a missle with wings". Check out the examination of that flight and the photos on thewebfairy.

Cecil, I don’t know that I can completely agree with you, I’ve heard the issue about hold practice, from grey haired CFI’s and regular G.A. pilots,,,, they all seem to say the same thing about holds.

Well, it’s definitely a YMMV thing. Also, it depends when and where you fly. I know what you are saying, but realistically, how many times have have you been asked to hold at a towered airport because traffic load was so prohibitive.

Firstly, that’s just one of many scenarios for being asked/told to hold. To answer your question, I don’t know. Definitely more than zero, but not that often. I’ve been asked to hold flying into Arcata, was given a hold out near Modesto, have held at Tracy for the LVK ILS 25R as well as at MARNA down near MRY. More often though I get a ‘visual hold’ or a ‘vector hold’. There are some approaches that start with a turn in the hold – check out Napa – given direct SGD at 4000′ cleared for the approach – you basically fly the hold. Hilton

Hi Allen, When I took my multi-engine check ride my boss was getting his DE authority also. The FAA Inspector from Albuquerque, NM was also training two new inspectors. There were five of us in a Piper Navajo on a July day in NM. Talk about "sweating" it out. P.S. We all passed!

Wow that must have given the examiner(s) an opportunity to really test the single engine climb performance! They probably all had white knuckles by the time you landed… I’m now hoping I don’t get an extra person on board the Seminole when it comes to taking the Multi addon, the performance is marginal at best!
I have had scandalously few hours in the system since I passed my checkride, and I’ve had to hold on approach twice. Once approaching Arlington when the controller was trying to ensure that the predecessor, who had actually – gasp – landed, had closed. And once at Paine when the controller had, at a guess, been a little optimistic about sequencing. Surely the first problem illustrates that it’s going to be more likely to happen at an untowered field because by then you’re on advisories and off radar? It doesn’t have to be a busy hub. Remember to check if there’s a specific frequency for closing the plan at an untowered field (e.g. one local airport with ILS and scheduled airline traffic uses the CD frequency, but that’s not clearly stated on the plate). — David Brooks

Cecil, I have to admit that I am going to have to woodshed a little more on holding patterns. Such an irony, that the very thing we will be tested on in the practical (i.e., holding patterns) represents something that we may never be asked to do in our entire flying career.

I’m sure other IFR pilots, and perhaps your CFI, have told you this – it simply is not true. I have been given numerous holds by ATC here in the Bay Area (where you are). Also, many approaches have a hold as part of their misssed approach. As yourself what happens if you lose comms. I remember hearing NorCal giving a military pilot a hold and ATC had to literally describe to the pilot how to fly it (over PYE if I remember correctly) – I was amazed. Moreover, if you go into the exercise of learning holds with the thought that you’ll never use them, you probably won’t maximize the learning experience. Hilton

Or, can anyone give relay some interesting checkride experiences to take the edge off my nervousness…

It was November 2001. The WTC wreckage was still strewn across lower Manhattan and the Pentagon construction crews were starting their own herculean rebuilding effort while many citizens were still wary of aircraft sounds in the skies. The Powers That Be had just recently implemented the DC ADIZ and all the local pilots were well aware that the circular contrails above the city were created by aircraft not displaying civilian livery. I scheduled my checkride to fly out of Frederick, MD (KFDK) but that meant I had to get my plane from Leesburg, VA (KJYO) to FDK. At the time of my checkride, all flights in the ADIZ had to be on IFR plans so I had to convince my instructor to tag along so we could fly IFR on his ticket. We get to FDK without incident, meet the DE and she begins reviewing the documentation. Aircraft logs check out OK and she reviews my logbook. "So you flew to Elizabeth City, NC for your long XC?" Yes. "I don’t see an instructor sign-off." Uh-oh. I had gotten an interpretation from AOPA that an instructor was not required for that flight. They were wrong. As the DE put it, "You should have asked the FAA." OK, what are my options? It turned out that her afternoon appointment had cancelled (perhaps due to ADIZ restrictions) and she was willing to give me the checkride in the afternoon *IF* I could get the long XC done that day. I call the office and let them know I need to take the rest of the day off and they graciously agreed. Meanwhile, my instructor (who I begged to check) also was able to get the day off from his day job. We planned and flew a XC from FDK to Hot Springs, VA (KHSP) – a very cool mountain-top airport for those interested – with a secondary stop at Shenandoah (KSHD). While waiting for fuel at SHD, I called and confirmed with the DE that we would be back in FDK that day, but that daylight would be fast receding by the time we got there. She normally doesn’t conduct checkrides at night, but she suggested I get back to FDK as quickly as possible. We kept the squirrels under the cowl of the 172 running as fast as the whip could get them and we arrived back at FDK with about 25 minutes of daylight left. My instructor signed off the logbook and the DE began the oral portion of the checkride. Everything went well and we went to the plane where I performed the pre-flight by flashlight. Luckily, I was still night current and we took off for the practical test. We went through the usual assortment of tasks – steep turns, DME arc, VOR approach, tracking radials, etc. – and ended up shooting the ILS back to FDK. She let me know that I’d "broken out" and could remove the hood and proceeded to inform me that as long as I could land and park the plane, I’d received my instrument rating. Even with that added pressure, I was able to fly a near-perfect glideslope followed by a chirp-chirp…chirp landing that any instructor would be proud of. We went inside where the DE filled out my temporary certificate and I filed my very first IFR plan where I was to be PIC – just to get home to JYO. After all was said and done, I performed the first pre-flight of the day before 8am and tied down after 7pm. In between, I logged 1.1 hours for the trip to/from JYO-FDK, 4.1 hours for the long XC, and another 1.3 for the practical test (6.5 hours of flight time) on top of the oral exam. It was a long day. Let this be a lesson for all: Take your instructor on the long XC flight! Really the nerves haven’t hit yet and I figure that the worst thing that will happen is that I’d bust some portion and have to retake it… Holding pattern entries would be my guess…

Good attitude. Try to stay calm. Remember that your instructor wouldn’t send you up (hopefully) unless he thought you were ready. — John T http://tknowlogy.com/TknoFlyer http://www.pocketgear.com/products_search.asp?developerid=4415

Or, can anyone give relay some interesting checkride experiences to take the edge off my nervousness…

My instrument checkride was not atypical so I don’t have any over-the-top experiences to offer. I did, however, forget the acronym MEA when the DE pointed to it on the en route chart and asked what the number represented. After he answered his own question, I apologized for the legitimate brain fart. This DE is also a CFII (not mine) and a very easy person with whom to converse, so overall the test was very comfortable for me. However, in regards to the nervousness, I have two suggestions. The first is to really enjoy and interact with the DE during the oral exam. Ask him about his experiences. Take the opportunity to let him/her teach you, as well as the more obvious part about him/her testing you. The more you informally interact with him/her, the more you should realize that he is just a more experienced pilot who wants to be sure you will be a safe pilot, especially with a rating that can be inherently more lethal. Secondly, I found it reassuring that I absolutely did not want to pass the instrument checkride if I was not a safe instrument pilot. I am not on any fast track to some airline job, so slamming out ratings like the passing of mile markers on a super highway was not my goal. Carrying my precious cargo of my wife and two little boys as safely as possible was (and is still) my goal. This may be obvious, but the point of passing is not to pass, but to demonstrate some level of proficiency. With that in mind, I gave the DE a quick speech at the beginning of my oral exam stating that I expected him to withhold the rating if I was not safe in his eyes. By doing this, I accomplished two things. First, it relaxed me because it reminded me of the real purpose of the checkride. Secondly, it demonstrated to the DE what my sincere goal was if I did pass the checkride. Remember that your CFII would not have endorsed your logbook if s/he felt you were not ready. Fly like it is your CFII in the right seat, and you should do very well. Looking forward to reading your post-instrument checkride report. — Peter —-== Posted via Newsfeed.Com – Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==—- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups —= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers – Total Privacy via Encryption =—

days. I would guess the tire needed more brakes for some reason in each case. You said it was the home base and the base is notorious for the effect of sudden brakage.

The first plane was a Fed-Ex A-300 out of Newark. They stopped in less than 4000′ of runway. All 8 main tires were blown. Jacks had to be trucked in to raise it up to change the tires. Once it was raised, the brakes wouldn’t disassemble. It was on the runway about 12 hours. Interestingly, it isn’t in the FAA’s incident listings. The second plane was a DC-3 based at nearby airport. Flat tires on taildraggers can be tricky. Fortunately they didn’t ground-loop it. The local newspaper reported that no flights had to divert. You know I sent a sarcastic e-mail to that editor. D.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It was a clear calm morning. The sun was just coming up over the ocean. The temperature was around 70F. I had an easy commute in to work. The employee parking shuttle bus driver waited for me to walk over and board instead of making me wait 15 minutes for the next one. I had only one Jeppeson update to do. There weren’t any nasty memoes from the chief pilot. No one was running their noisy APU, so I did the pre-flight exterior inspection. For once, I didn’t find any discrepencies. The only way it could have been better is if I started the day fishing instead of waiting until I got off work to go fishing. After the pre-flight, I was standing next to the plane chatting with a friend. He and I used to tow banners together. As we were talking, a big cloud of smoke rolled across the airfield. It was tire smoke but too much for a normal landing. Then a gate agent motioned for me to come up the jetway because the boarding passengers were concerned about the smell. I gave them an explanation that worked. After I hung up the PA, my helper-pilot told me that the main runway was shut down because of a disabled aircraft. We made a bet on which airline it was. It turned out to be my turn to buy lunch. Our departure time is at the start of the morning rush of departures, but the morning rush wasn’t happening because many flights were having headaches trying to get their weight down so they could use the short runway. We launched from the short runway in good time. The trip up to the Northeast was pleasant. We called the field insight from 60 miles out. Our turn time was good. We were ready to board when my intuition made the other pilot call clearance. Sure enough, we had a 2 hour gate hold because of delays due to a disabled airplane at our destination. That was going to cut into my fishing time. After the first hour passed, and the greasy spoon diner they call a restaurant had started serving lunch, I sauntered up to the gate area to get a bite to eat. I was surrounded by anxious passengers wanting more information. The gate agent had been instructed not to say anything. A certain irritable streak deep inside was starting to wiggle around because, unlike management, I know how to run an airline. I picked up the PA and gave the folks the information they craved. Just as my speech was winding down, the gate agent wispered to me that our gear-up time had been moved up. I keyed the PA again and told everyone that we had 20 minutes to be in the air or else ATC would send us to the end of the list. Those people must have liked my speech. They ran down the jetway. They stuffed bags in the overheads with super-human strength. I think I saw them shove the last standing passenger into a seat. We set a record for boarding a full plane. They must have liked my speech. Number 2 engine was lit and spooling up as we ran the runway. We made it into the air with less than a minute left of our edict. Maybe I should use that speech more often. The flight southbound was just as nice. ATC was giving vectors and speed restrictions to other traffic in order to get the required in-trail spacing, but they left us alone. All was going well. Too well. On the arrival, 30 miles from the airport, we were given holding instructions. It caught us by surprise. I had to fly the first orbit by hand until my helper-pilot programmed the hold into the FMS. Then he called the tower for more information. He turned to me and said, "What are the odds?". The main runway was still shutdown because it still had an airplane on it with 8 blown tires. The second runway was now shutdown because it also had an airplane on it with blown tires. What are the odds? The second plane was a DC-3. I know that the last DC-3 towbar left the airport a long time ago. The first disabled plane was still on it’s axles. The airport wouldn’t be open anytime soon. We decided that holding wouldn’t change anything, so we diverted to another airport. I never did get to go fishing that day. It was a beautiful day for fishing and I was stuck at the airport. What are the odds? D.

Two blown tire incidents in one days. I would guess the tire needed more brakes for some reason in each case. You said it was the home base and the base is notorious for the effect of sudden brakage. And fishing at your homebase is a passtime so maybe it has to do with water near the end of the runway. I remember Boston for this problem in the news papers. Is Boston your base?? I remember the Massacheustts solution for the Boston runway problem was to keep the old one and add a second without water as the overrun. Except the new one solved the noise polution problem only and is a poor use for the new North End. Somebody had Mayor White’s old crowd mad at them way back.

I live in a great RV park in Fl. Inexpensive as I go 6mos on and off. I rented a car last Sept instead of taking my MH as I was told it was hard to find a spot down there. Boy was I glad I did. US1 from Homestead to Key West was the worst slowest drive I have ever taken I’m not chicken either, I ‘v driven cross country in my MH with toad (even parked in downtown Houston). Try if you have a death wish!! Hope I have done this right. This is my first post

Key West definitely is not a good place for a large rig. Unless you are military, I understand there is only one campground available, and it is not pleasant. About 10 miles north of KW is the state park Bahia Honda. If you can get a site, that would be an excellent base camp.
Well, ya gotta realize, those were 14 day rates and they came from the discounted rates section. I think for regular rates you need to fill out the questionnaire.
Response:

Are there plenty of campgrounds?

Some, yes; plenty, no. How horrible is the traffic?

It’s not nearly as bad driving from somewhere TO there as it is to find a parking place after you GET there. The streets are narrow and crowded, and real estate is at a premium, so very little of it is used for parking. BTW, the drive down from Miami is absolutely spectacular. You’ll cross countless bridges, some of which are quite long, and the views out over the ocean are something you will never forget. Take your time and enjoy the ride — you can’t hurry anyway because of the congestion and the low speed limits. Be warned: US 1 down the Keys is NOT an expressway. Should I pick a "base camp" somewhere out of the mainstream and then travel the rest of them or would I be OK dragging the fiver all the way down to Key West?

That depends on whether you want to hassle with parking every day when you drive into KW. (See above.) You may want to consider Jabour’s RV Park (you can find their web site with a Google search), which is in downtown KW and within walking distance of almost everything. That way you can park your rig and not have to drive again. It’s crowded and tucked into what looks like a back alley, but it’s a nice place and very well maintained (and safe). Note: You will pay dearly for this convenience, just like you will pay for anything you get in KW. OTOH, if you stay farther up the Keys you will also pay dearly in the hassle of finding a parking place every day when you get to KW. Either way you pay. Not to say it’s not worth it, just be ready for sticker shock. KW is not a cheap place to visit at any time of the year. Are campground prices outrageous during the winter? Etc.

They are "outrageous" (all things are relative) at any time, but worth it if you want to see KW. We’ve been there twice, some years ago, and will go again at some point when time permits. Appreciate any and all comments and suggestions.

You’re welcome. Drive safely. GB in NC

If you are eligible to use military facilities, NAS Key West has a campground on the Bay. Take a taxi on base to KW proper and walk or rent a bike. As GDinNC says, watch your speed, the Sheriff and Florida HP patrol and give tickets. RVC USMC (Ret)

Are campground prices outrageous during the winter? Etc. Appreciate any and all comments and suggestions.
Good point. When we were there we didn’t move our camper at all, once we parked it on our "campsite" (I admit I’m using that term loosely — Jabour’s is not a traditional campground in the scenic, wooded sense <g). We walked everywhere we could, except for one afternoon when we rented a motorscooter and rode it to a couple of places that were too far to walk. That took care of everything we wanted to see on KW itself. Anything you want to see elsewhere on the Keys, you can see on your way down or back up. In fact, I’d suggest taking notes on the drive down and then you’ll know how much time (if any, depending on your interests) to allow for stops on the way back up.
Don’t know if its still there, but you used to be able to get an all day ticket and get on and off the "Conch Train" one of those tourist trolly things. That could save a little hoofing. It’s a fun tour, too.
Wednesday, Carolyn and I are going to a RPI park in Moore Haven, FL. We are considering taking a car trip to the keys. We have no great desire to spend a lot of time there, but figure everyone should see the keys at least once. Since it’s 250 miles from Moore Haven, to Key West, and campgrounds are so expensive at the Keys, it seems to make sense to spend a night in a motel and drive the car at 30 mpg, instead of the MH at 7. Questions. 1. If you’ve seen one of the keys, have you seen them all? 2. Is it worth the time and trouble to drive the 100 miles of the keys? 3. What kind of speeds and delays can one expect from one end of the keys to the other? 4. Are there lots of red lights, traffic jams, construction delays, etc.? 5. Is there something you know of which is a _must_ see? 6. Is there something we should know about and maybe avoid? 7. If we changed plans and stayed in a camground in Homestead, can one drive the keys from there and back in one day without rushing? 8. Can you suggest a reasonably priced hotel/motel which is clean. Lon

Questions. 1. If you’ve seen one of the keys, have you seen them all?

No way. You haven’t seen *anything* until you’ve seen Key West. Definitely go all the way down. 2. Is it worth the time and trouble to drive the 100 miles of the keys?

Absolutely. The drive itself is worth it. The scenery is spectacular and like nothing you will see anywhere else. Any number of long, high bridges over the ocean, connecting the little islands. 3. What kind of speeds and delays can one expect from one end of the keys to the other?

Don’t know about this time of year. Always expect tourist traffic, though, and don’t be in a hurry. You’ll go through any number of congested areas. US 1 down the Keys is *not* an expressway. You’ll be driving at slower speeds than you’re used to driving on a major highway. 4. Are there lots of red lights, traffic jams, construction delays, etc.?

Don’t know. There weren’t when we were there a few years ago. 5. Is there something you know of which is a _must_ see?

Hemingway’s house is an interesting tour. Mel Fisher’s museum of recovered shipwreck treasures is worth the time, IMO. Be sure to walk down Duval Street (where all the bars are) for people-watching. There are some really different-looking people there. <g And be sure to be at Mallory Square (the docks) at sunset for a crazy time, with lots of street performers and counter-culture types having a good ol’ time. 6. Is there something we should know about and maybe avoid?

Everything is expensive (location, location, location) — but you can’t avoid it, so don’t worry about it. 7. If we changed plans and stayed in a camground in Homestead, can one drive the keys from there and back in one day without rushing?

No. Not without rushing. And you wouldn’t have time to see anything once you got there. Besides, you need to be there at sunset (see above). 8. Can you suggest a reasonably priced hotel/motel which is clean.

Nothing will seem "reasonably priced." But it’s worth it, especially for one night. We’ve been twice and often talk about going again when we have time for a longer trip. GB in NC

I love the raw oysters down there, but Lon is a Michigan boy and, from my experience they aren’t crazy about raw shellfish . They make this drink on the upper Keys called a rum runner which is awesome.
Neither of us particularly like "crowded", and would avoid the keys entirely for that reason were it not for all the great things we have heard about it. I want to see it, but don’t want to stay long. It just doesn’t make sense to either of us to drive the MH 500 miles round trip to spend one night in it. Logically, since campgrounds generally cost $50/night on the keys, we figure we can spend up to $200 on a motel and food, and still be money ahead of the game. Besides, we’ve only spent 3 nights in the last 16 months which weren’t in the MH. It’ll be like a mini vacation. <g Also, don’t worry about food, there are great restaurants every where.
Hi Lon, We did that Key West thing about two years ago. We parked at a Casino near Homestead and spent a night parked there and asked them the next morning if we could leave the RV parked with them. They didnt mind so we motored down by car. It was a long drive but worth it. There are touristy things to see along the way and the part I found interesting was looking out to sea, in a S.E direction to Cuba ,apparently 90 mi away. (According to the sign they have put up) We also stayed at a state campground and went out to sea in a glass bottom boat. That was "cool" Do the trip, you will enjoy it. Regards PS we have made the grade!!! Decenber 5th was the day. Took about a year.
